The Bills have “significant” interest in Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo, according to Jason La Canfora of CBSSports.com, although Buffalo is still eyeing a future with incumbent QB Tyrod Taylor, albeit on a cheaper contract than the his current option-based deal, which would guarantee him north of $30MM.

Romo, meanwhile, unsurprisingly prefers to land with a contending team, and it’s not clear that he views the Bills in such a light. Instead, Romo’s list of favored destinations includes the Broncos, Texans, Cardinals, and Chiefs, per La Canfora. Denver has been tossed out as a suitor for Romo before, but the general manager John Elway & Co. are reportedly more likely to target Romo as a free agent than as an acquirable asset. Houston, too, doesn’t appear to be in the running, as the Texans are more likely to draft a quarterback than pursue a veteran option.
Barriers block a potential path between Romo and Arizona/Kansas City, as well. Cardinals quarterback Carson Palmer has reportedly been contemplating retirement, but the chances of his return could be buoyed by wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald‘s announcement that he’ll continue his career in 2017. The Chiefs, meanwhile, have Alex Smith under contract for the next two seasons, but could theoretically release him with a post-June 1 designation, and take on dead money charges of $3.6MM in 2017 and 2018.
Romo, hypothetically, would be a solid fit in new Buffalo offensive coordinator Rick Dennsion‘s scheme, which utilizes many of the same zone-blocking concepts deployed by the Cowboys. The Bills ranked first in rushing DVOA last season but just 19th in passing DVOA.
Sure if the price is right. Then again who knows what that is? I see speculation ranging from first round pick (absurd) to nobody will trade for him because they know Dallas will have to release him. That logic ignores the fact you aren’t guaranteed to sign him if he’s released.
Muddying the waters even more is jerry jones unwavering loyalty to stars (not a bad thing except in situations like this). Meaning you probably take half the league, or more, off the board in deference to Tony.
Tony didn’t help himself stating he wants to play against Dallas next year so he can beat them. That could weaken that loyalty thing a bit. Don’t want to be playing in Cleveland next year do ya Tony?
My thoughts are simple. Trade him to the highest bidder that has a reasonable chance of being competitive with him and let him decide if he wants to accept trade or retire. Buffalo might fit that.
Jerry doesn’t have the personnel authority that he used to. Cowboys released Demarcus Ware not too long ago and didn’t pay Murray after he led the NFL in rushing. There’s no way Romo is a Cowboy next season. I think an argument can be made for releasing him over trading him from a Cowboys prospective since we can move the cap hit around a little bit that way and I think that is probably the most likely outcome.
NO!! That would be two steps back, good quarterback but old and injury prone. Keep tyrod he has fresh legs just need to tweak his game more to take it to the next level!
For the sake of his health he should just retire
Romo needs to go to a warmer weather team in a larger market – Texans sounds good to me
If he decides to play again, he needs to go to a team with good ownership structure in place. The bills aren’t at that level yet.
