The Bills are still working through the idea of retaining quarterback Tyrod Taylor, but general manager Doug Whaley is thought to be in favor of starting 2016 fourth-round pick Cardale Jones next season, according to Vic Carucci of the Buffalo News.

Buffalo’s front office has been smitten with Jones for some time, as reports before last year’s draft indicated the club was “enamored” with the then-Ohio State quarterback, while Whaley & Co. were reportedly pushing for Jones to play at the tail end of last season. Jones eventually did see some action during Week 17, completing six of 11 passes for 96 yards and an interception, but the most notable thing he did during his rookie campaign was knock a phone out of a reporter’s hand during training camp with a pass that was overthrown by 20 yards.
But unless the Bills come to an agreement with Taylor, Jones may be their only option under center. The club could pursue a veteran in free agency, but most of the signal-callers on the open market are less than inspiring. One recent report claimed Buffalo has “significant” interest in Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo, but Carucci shoots down that notion, observing that Romo likely will target a team with a clearer path to contention.
Meanwhile, while Taylor is not open to accepting a paycut in order to remain with the Bills, a “very real possibility” exists that Taylor would be amenable to some sort of contract restructure that lowers his 2017 cap charge but doesn’t amount to a pay reduction, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL.com. Of course, a restructure that doesn’t involve a paycut is essentially a cosmetic change that often allows a player to receive money even earlier, so theoretically any player should be receptive to such a move.
I like what Tyrod has given the Bills, he has always given them a chance to win. If the Bills don’t want him, let him go, there are a couple franchises that could use his services. As for Jones, I think he could become a franchise qb; it just might take awhile and he will have his growing pains. I don’t see it being a quick fix
Franchise QB? You’re clinically insane.
I mean a franchise qb as in a franchise that wants to build around a certain player, like the Bills are thinking of with Jones. I personally wouldn’t build around an unproven guy but he reminds me of Matt Cassel, very small track record. He seems to he in the right place at the right time. He’s shown flashes of greatness in college, which could be intriguing to the Bills owners. I’m a Packer fan who’s grown up watching Favre and Rodgers;so no, he will never be one of those players, and I doubt anyone ever will be. like I said this won’t be a quick fix or a fix at all but it will save the Bills wallets and maybe win a couple games
Lol if anything I’m on you’re boat, the Bills are insane to get rid of Tyrod for Cardele, hes unproven, I just see the move being based purely of $$$
Or they could just draft Chad Kelly
Franchise as in McDonalds or Disney?
Just kidding I hope your right if this rumor is true I still don’t know why they’re selling hammered with this general manager but I trust the owners
* so enamored not selling hammers
Pretty sure cardale was telling urban meyer he wanted to start too ..
tyrod Taylor would be a good fit for the Arizona cardinals, if you could get their stubborn #$&% management to listen
This is why they always suck, it’s to bad
The thing I like about jones is he knows when to step up in the pocket, saw the preseason games and he did that great..thats what taylor does not do well, instead of stepping up he starts running..all the great qb’s know how to step up in the pocket..if jones can learn to read defenses he can be a good one.
Cleveland could have picked 1 less receiver and picked up Jones last draft. I’d rather have Jones than Taylor in Cleveland.
I’d rather have Taylor
Look Taylor is not the answer. He ran more this year then he did in his first year and miss wide open target. Cant seemed to make play when you need him to. He doesn’t make quick read on defense and make let the ball go. I like jones from what i see him do in preseason and his game against the jets. Give him a chance. He could be the guy idk but let give him a chance to prove it wether he us or not
Right, Taylor may not be the answer, but must be considered as a brigde solution; Taylor will not be an elite QB as to give any of his WRs look amazing in a game as Hogan’s 2016 AFC Championship performance had, but he is. etter than Osweiller, Cuttler or “glass doll” Romo… We, Bills fans, must consider the lack of talent on pass offense our belove team had in 2016.
Let’s prove with an adequate pass coaching, give Taylor some healthy and sharpen WRs and look to improve the next couple of years.
Don’t desmantle the team if has been middle table last 3 seasons… just improve the areas in need and one of them is depth in WR corps.
Also, Taylor is the reason Bills is second year consecutive rush offense leader in league… the team needs a better defense to also be competitive for a playoff birth. Championships are won with defense and rushing attack. The team need to learn clock management in order to win elite teams and make the playoffs happen after 17 years drougt!
Lots of we’ll thought out excuses. The knock on Taylor is that he has trouble reading defenses. I’m a Browns fan and i haven’t had a chance to c him play. You know better. A mobile qb is a good thing, but the great ones read defenses in a 2nd or 3.
Cardale is the perfect fit for the Bills………….if they are playing for the #1 pick in the 2018 draft.
