Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels lost interest in the 49ers head coaching job after New England executive Nick Caserio declined to interview for the San Francisco general manager vacancy, according to Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com. Prior to Caserio’s decision, he and McDaniels were considered the “runaway favorites” to join the 49ers as a package deal, adds Maiocco.

McDaniels, 40, was linked to two vacancies in addition to the 49ers this offseason, as he also took interviews with the Rams and Jaguars. However, despite reports that McDaniels was one of three finalists for the job (and preferred San Francisco to other landing spots), the Patriots OC announced last week that he had withdrawn his name from consideration. Family concerns were also thought to play into McDaniels’ decision, as he reportedly worried about moving his wife and children across the country.
Caserio, meanwhile, decided to not even entertain the notion of joining the 49ers, personally turning down an interview request from San Francisco ownership. The idea that he and McDaniels were viewed as a tandem makes sense, especially given that the pair enjoys a long working relationship that dates back to their playing days at John Carroll University. Meanwhile, the 49ers’ exhaustive general manager search is still ongoing, though the club appears to be zeroing in on final candidates.
That’s because Caserio peeled a few layers and realized that the 49ers organization reeks worse than a spoiled onion while being runned by wanna-be owner and silverspoon extraordinaire Jed York. As long as he runs the show, the place stinks. Bring in Ronnie Lotta group to right the course. #itsyourmomsteamnotyours
So tell me how it stinks. When they had Jim harbaugh they were one of the top 3 teams in the NFL for 3-4 years. Then they f up and let harbaugh go. The owner listens to his Gm who hires tomsula and Kelly. The Gm screwed up not owner. Owner wanted Adam gase who would’ve been awesome. Now owner took accountability fires Gm and is hiring new Gm. If anyone looks at whole situation owner isn’t really to blame it’s ex Gm.
Really? You’re defending Jed Dork? Yikes
Yeah, Jed York screwed up badly by letting Harbaugh go and siding with Baalke. No Niner fan or anybody else will defend York there. But we aren’t getting Harbaugh back, and we are just hoping that the York boy has learned from his mistakes. The Niners are a great franchise, we just need to rebuild. Baalke was the source of most of the problems and now he’s gone.
You forgot that it was the Yorks who low balled harbaugh on the extension saying we haven’t won a super bowl yet. He also sided w Baalke over harbaugh, Baalke doesidnt mutually part ways, Jed the idiot york did. The worst part is they are ignorant. His father in a hissy fit fired mooch and hired his Tomsula …Nolan. Nolan can’t even get a job as a kd coach let alone ever run a NFL team. Oh yeah it’s the owners fault, he hired the gm!
Those were the days when the niners were owned by a great owner like DeBartolo. Still can’t believe he’s somehow related to Jed Dork
If you never take risks, you’ll never be richly rewarded. Shanny’s not afraid to take that risk.
I never get wehre the media started this nonsense that the coach and GM need to be a package deal or it won’t work. Let me tell it, those deals never work. Remember Romeo Crenell and Phil Savage. Yeah, the Browns don’t either. How about Scott Pioli and Todd Hayley. Yeah, Chiefs don’t either. Imo, it’s best to hire the 2 independent of each other and clearly define both of their roles….GM get good players, and the coach make them work. Everyone can look at playrs and see if they are instinctual along with being talented or if the coaching staff is doing a bad job. It’s not rocket science. So why you need the coach and GM be attached at the hip coming in is nonsense. Miami did just this last year and had success. Carolina did this 2 years ago and had success. The Lions just did this and had success. This should be the blueprint.
McDaniels, turn down the 49ers because Bill Belichick, will retire if they win the Super Bowl. Then McDaniels will become head coach of the Patriots. He wants the better job.
