Chip Kelly is out in San Francisco and he already knows what he wants to do next. The former 49ers head coach says that he would like to be an offensive coordinator, according to Jay Glazer of FOX Sports (Twitter link). Glazer did not specify whether Kelly was referring to an NFL or college opportunity, but our educated guess is that Kelly is looking to stay in the professional ranks.

Kelly also says that former GM Trent Baalke was working to get him fired for several weeks. Ultimately, Baalke got his way, but both men were shown out the door together. This isn’t the first time that Baalke has swayed ownership to make a coaching change. Glazer says that Baalke was the reason the 49ers elected not to hire Adam Gase in 2015, and instead went with Jim Tomsula. Apparenty, the Niners were set to announce Gase as their new coach before Baalke went to Jed York and undercut the decision. Gase’s Dolphins are getting ready for Wild Card weekend while the 49ers are blowing things up (again) after a two-win season.
This has been a bad week of PR for Baalke. On Monday, it was reported that Kelly and others in the organization were pushing for the team to draft Dak Prescott but Baalke did not pull the trigger on taking him.

I already didn’t like Baalke but the more I hear about him blocking certain moves makes me dislike him even more. Don’t get me wrong when I say this..Chip wasn’t even the reason we failed. Yea he is a College coach and not a NFL Coach. I hear it all the time and I agree but he was given a team that had way too many holes and also fought the injury bug all year. Baalke is to blame for that..not Chip! I do agree with starting all over and getting rid of both but I do not blame Chip for this season. As far as missing out on Gase, that does suck! But..I do not think he would’ve done a better job this year with this bad of a roster and all the injuries. I hope that we can bring in someone like Shanahan or McDaniels and I hope that management can actually be patient with them because this rebuild isn’t going to be one season type of thing. We need to have a great draft or at least a good draft and need to hit free agency hard. There are some good players out in free agency and we have a lot of money to spend so let’s hope management actually spends it this year unlike the past. I’m hoping for the best but I am realistic and I do not think we will be contending for at least 2-3 seasons if all goes well..could be longer if we hit some bumps in the road. I am very excited for the off season though. New GM, new HC, new staff, Free Agency and the Draft. Can’t wait!
I’m in 100% agreement with you…until the last sentence in your comment. As long as know-nothing York is doing the hiring, I will wait until I’m optimistic. He needs a top-notch GM to pull the strings, both in the draft and in the free agent market. Will he get one? It’s not an attractive situation to A-level candidates.
CONTROL FREAK is an understatement!!! It’d be tolerable if they were winning but some dudes need to look in the mirror to see WHO THE faulty common denominator is!! Here’s hoping he never gets the power again. No wonder Harbaugh left
Wow. Trying to get fired, the coach he just hired. In the middle of his first season! Probably did the same to Harbaugh and Tomsula as well. The question is how did he last this long?
I say this in all sincerity, SF needs to get a great GM then hire a place holder like Fisher for 2-3 years and build the team up with good draft picks. Then go hire a good coach. Harbaugh was a good coach but he had a really good roster because of the ineptness of Singletary and some pretty good drafts. I want SF to be good again I want the NFCW to be considered the best Div in the NFL again. We all have a ways to go even Seattle. We need to stop this crazy throw anyone into the OL and expect to compete crap. Draft some OL and teach them.
The Rams need to stop building to beat just Seattle and what SF used to be and the Cards need to play better outside the Div. There should be a healthy respect between the fans within this division. We don’t have to like each other but our teams have all had our times of success and failure.
SF Seattle can feel your pain of having a horrible owner we have dealt with that. He even tried to move the team to LA and lost. He sabotaged the team and made them suck but unlike the NBA the commissioner wasn’t in on the deal and we kept the team. You aren’t in that shape but you have to deal with stupid decisions. Hopefully you get a GM that can overcome them. Because let’s face it football is more fun when our teams are good and the last game truly means something.
WOW what a dumb statement geta a good coach and ride it out till you start winning Holmgren wasn’t winning right away but then they started to win
Fisher wss an example because I think a top notch coach is not going to come right now. If they did Jed would probably fire them before they could turn then team into a winner anyway.
I saw an article yesterday where Jed was asked if he felt he was competent enough to run a football team and he responded by saying that he owned the team and owners don’t get fired…then I did some research and it’s actually his mommy that is the principal owner…he’s such a spoiled know-nothing brat it makes me sick and he has completely derailed a once proud franchise…he played high school baseball and was a huge fan growing up…sorry Jed, that doesn’t qualify you as competent, and you being incompetent is what has ruined the Niners!
Chip’s gonna come back east, and worl with his buddy Bill. Pats offense running a Chip Kelly no huddle will be scary
If Chip comes back it will be with a team doesn’t have a coaching staff in place I can see him in LA either the Ram’s or the Charhers
I would assume an OC job would be in the NFL as it would be a large step down to take an OC job for a college team. I actually think Chip could have success as an OC. He definitely has a great offensive mind and I think he could be successful if he doesn’t have such a large say on player personnel decisions. Obviously he would have some say on what type of players he would want, but I think that if he could build a scheme that works with his next team’s current offensive players (rather than getting rid of current players to bring in Pac-12 players) and adapts as the personnel and league changes he could be successful.
