If Tony Romo has a say in the matter, he would like to be suiting up for the Broncos in 2017. And, as Mike Klis of 9News writes, the Broncos may be willing to oblige, if Romo should become a free agent in the offseason. Per Klis, “[a] source in the Broncos’ football department did not dismiss the possibility of bringing in the Dallas Cowboys quarterback — providing the situation reaches the point where Romo is no longer Cowboys’ property.”
Romo, of course, is under Cowboys’ control through the 2019 season, but after the emergence of Dak Prescott in 2016, Dallas will likely look to move their long-time quarterback in the coming months. The Cowboys’ preference would be to trade Romo and to recoup some sort of draft pick compensation for him, but given that the soon-to-be 37-year-old is currently slated to earn $14MM in 2017, $19.5MM in 2018, and $20.5MM in 2019, that could be a difficult proposition.
If Romo were to be released, however, he would surely garner a fair amount of interest on the open market, and the Broncos could be in play. As Klis writes, Denver is unlikely to swing a trade for Romo, but if the club was in a position to negotiate a reduced contract with him, it may make sense for them to do so. After all, the Broncos are loaded on the defensive side of the ball, and they have some serious talent at the offensive skill positions as well. Their quarterback play could prevent them from taking full advantage of that talent, and the addition of Romo would immediately make them legitimate championship contenders.
GM John Elway has repeatedly stated that he is happy with the team’s current quarterback group of Trevor Siemian and Paxton Lynch, but while those young signal-callers may well develop into quality starters, they clearly have a ways to go before they reach that point. By the time they do, the rest of the roster may not be as strong as it is now.
As Klis observes, Elway did pursue Colin Kaepernick last year, so it stands to reason that he would make a push for a much more accomplished quarterback this offseason, assuming the price is right.
Dumb if they do. Likely to get hurt and ineffective if healthy.
Get Sanchez again if they want another disappointment lol.
I’m not sure Jerry Jones would want to allow Tony Romo to go a team such as the Broncos, a team the Cowboys face on next year’s schedule.
If it happens Tony Romo would most likely be released.
I have mixed emotions about this…the Broncos will need to revamp their offensive line in order to keep whoever is under center upright and healthy next year…Romo has obvious health concerns but I think he could give them a good chance to ride that defense to another run or two for a Super Bowl…they will also need to make sure their defense doesn’t slip after losing Wade Phillips to the Rams…this is kind of showing like they must not be super confident in Paxton Lynch’s ability and they must see what I see, the fact that Siemien is nothing more than a serviceable back up quarterback in the NFL
The Cowboys are in quite a pickle. If they keep Romo he is going to take up a big chunk of cap space for the next three years. If they release him the dead space cap money he will cost will be enormous for the next 2 years.
If I was a team in need of a QB (Broncos, Jets, Bills) why trade for him and take on that contract? Especially for a player who is in the later part of his career, injury prone and more than brittle? If he’s released sign him to a smaller 2 year deal and hope that you’re Super Bowl window is within that time. That is what the Broncos did with Manning.
It’s going to be interesting to see what the Cowboys do, and if there is team out there foolish enough to take him on for that price, plus the compensation it’s going to cost.
Um…Romo would make them serious contenders? Doubt it. They need much more help than just a vet QB. No O-Line, no running game, and everyone else is getting older.
Reread my post. Never said they were serious contenders, said a team looking for a QB.
I didn’t say Romo by himself could turn them into serious contenders…I addressed the fact that they need to revamp the O-line and also shore up the defense…I do feel that a healthy Romo along with the other issues being addressed would make the Donkeys contenders…Peyton Manning was a shadow of his former self during their Super Bowl campaign, so a healthy Romo would be a nice addition and an improvement from Siemien…if they feel like Lynch can develop into a starter then I think this is a moot point but I’m getting the vibe that he may not be their long term answer under center
People forget to mention Denver delt with a lot of injury’s Walker,Andy J,Anderson,Wolfe,Demarcus,Green a few more starters. The last three games there was more practice squad members then full time starters. And they still were in the mix for a wild card spot. No with money to up grade are o-line & with Capitol in the draft 5 picks in the top #100. Romo would automatically make Broncos a Super Bowl contender Denver is a young team with the whole Defense in there prime of there carrer. There all locked up through 2020 the people acting like Denver couldn’t contended are haters 9-7 is not a down year. It just showed that the AFC west division is the best in the NFL 10 wins will not win that division.
