It’s Colin Kaepernick time. 49ers coach Chip Kelly announced that No. 7 will get the start on Sunday against the Bills. Former starter Blaine Gabbert will now serve as Kaepernick’s primary backup.
In Week 5, Gabbert had a rough outing against the Cardinals and soon after, Kelly left the door open to a quarterback change. Kaepernick, the one-time face of the Niners, made headlines around the world this year for his protest of national anthem. Now, he has an opportunity to make headlines again for his play on the field and not his actions on the sideline.
Kaepernick signed a six-year extension with the 49ers prior to the 2014 season, a deal that had the potential to be worth $126MM. The dual threat QB led the Niners to the NFC title game in the previous season, but he has yet replicate the level of play that earned him a long-term deal. Injuries to his left knee, left shoulder, and right thumb held him back this offseason, but he has apparently healed up in recent weeks.
The 49ers and Kaepernick have been working on a restructuring of his contract and today’s news likely means that it’s a done deal. The amended contract will reportedly alleviate concerns regarding the quarterback’s injury guarantees. For what it’s worth, Kelly told reporters that he’s unsure about Kaepernick’s contract situation.

Hopefully he doesn’t kneel down after every snap
Lol
the bills can just play the national anthem every time he snaps the ball and they will win
I hope his line takes a knee every time he drops back.
Lol
May your disrespect to all the dead soldiers who died so you may disrespect them be repaid to you in karma.
You’re an idiot
He not disrespecting dead soldiers…
I hope they knock the crap out of that scum bag!!!
Man I feel for ponder man I know he ain’t popular but not Colin, he just sucks, sucked since he started for them
He’s lost 3 pro bowl o lineman, played for JIM TOMSULA, lost another lineman, lost harbaugh, and lost another lineman, plus a stud tight end to throw to. Any assessment of him since 2014 is unfair. He got his ass kicked last year and I’m sure the same thing would happen to you guys if the right side of your line was non existent existent. Also, you guys are fans. You are fans of what happens on the field. Shut up about his protest. If you believe it’s a free country, then you should believe he can protest any way he wants as long as its nonviolent. Stop contradicting yourselves.
Everyone will know listen to what you said and stop. You’re such an authoritative figure.
I agree with you to an extent. Our o line sucked when he was at his worse. He was always under pressure, getting hit while throwing or getting sacked. That will rattle any QB. He was playing scared, he was making bad throws because he was always under pressure and fearing of that big hit. It’s not an excuse. He could’ve done better for sure though, there were countless times that he missed an open receiver or threw it away when guys were open or took a sack when guys were open or threw it to a covered guy which ended up getting intercepted while others were open but I think he still could do better if he has a better line.
Kaep’s an athlete, not a QB. It’s a fact. No excuses. That’s just how it is.
Yeah, yeah…he went to a Super Bowl. So has QBs like Neil O’Donnell, Rex Grossman, Trent Dilfer, Joe Flacco (beat Kaep – that’s pathetic), Brad Johnson, Doug Williams and the list goes on. My point is that there have been many not-so-great QBs who have gone to a Super Bowl. Kaepernick may be the worst Super Bowl QB of all time.
He will fare no better than Gabbert. The 49ers are in desperate need of a real QB.
All fans should now kneel for the entire game because clearly, 49ers management think this season does not matter.
All fans need to boycott this game and any game he plays in hereafter.
What if you support him?
What’s his point, or the point of any of this? Cops are racist? It’s fun to participate in media hype that misses the sociological point by such an astronomical margin that it’s almost impossible to even begin to engage in a coherent conversation about it?
Who Flippin cares….. he’s a loser
I wonder if Ponder gets a shot at some point if Kaep stinks. Anyone think so? I really think so. Chip likes Ponder a lot. I also would not be one bit surprised if Kaep and Gabbert both are gone next season, Ponder gets a one year deal and we draft a QB making Ponder the only one out of the three left over next season. Just my thoughts. Cools be completely wrong. Seems like we’ve seen enough of Gabbert and if Kaep doesn’t do well we will have seen enough of him as well. We will see I guess. I hope the guy does come back strong though.
