Maybe Jimmy Garoppolo isn’t off the market after all. The Patriots are exploring backup quarterback possibilities in free agency, a source tells Jeff Howe of the Boston Herald. Connecting the dots, it seems that New England is doing its homework in the event it trades the highly-coveted young QB.
If the Patriots move Garoppolo, it seems that they would sign a veteran quarterback to slot behind Tom Brady. Depending on who it is, that out-of-house addition could be put into a competition with Jacoby Brissett to determine who gets No. 2 QB status. This year’s free agent market is flush with experienced backup types, including Nick Foles, Ryan Fitzpatrick, Colin Kaepernick, Brian Hoyer, Case Keenum, Matt McGloin, Mark Sanchez, and more.
The 49ers and Browns have been heavily connected to Garoppolo. While they will continue to explore all of their options at quarterback, it sounds like they shouldn’t give up on prying the 25-year-old away from the defending champs.
Anyone but Mark Sanchez. I can’t make fun of him for the butt fumble if he plays for the Pats!
He’s also terrible.
Who’s good at deflating footballs?
Not really that funny anymore
Tired and sad…
is that the best comment you could come up with ?
Look at this guy!! What comedian do you write for?
I love how you guys rip the deflate gate which is newer and still has soooo many more double meanings to it but dont say a thing about the butt fumble which is older and was overplayed for 2 plus years and really cant have fun with it like you can deflated balls.
Yeah, right. Kaepernick. New England fans would skin the guy alive.
Brissett wouldnt be terrible number 2 so I feel like they should look more into improving him and finding basically whoevers out there after the draft
When was the last time the Patriots had a veteran backup QB who want drafted and developed by them, the Matt Cassel year? I really wouldn’t be shocked if they role out Brissett, assuming he’s healthy.
Something interesting being floated right now locally would be instead of tagging Garoppolo next year, give Brady 2 more years, extend Garoppolo to a 2 year bridge deal for the value of the tag, (12-13 mil a year) and then give him good QB money to start afterward. He’d stay under the same amount of team control, but the cap hit is spaced out over 2 years.
By give Brady 2 more years I don’t mean extend him, I mean it’s Brady’s job to lose for the next 2 years, then hand it over to Garoppolo.
It’s Brady’s job until he retires. And that definitely will be longer than two years from now
I wouldn’t be so sure. Belichick values current performance, not past.
lol did you just suggest Tom Brady could potentially lose his job if he has a poor game(s)? No
No but if anyone said this about Peyton Manning 3 years ago you would’ve laughed at me too.
Peyton Manning was also coming off a serious neck injury. Pre-neck injury, I would’ve pegged Peyton playing another 5-10 years if he was able to stay upright. If Tom Brady doesn’t suffer what would essentially be a career ending injury, then he isn’t losing his job unless he ends up asking for an absurd amount of money.
Montana left the Niners, Namath left the Jets, Favre left GB, Unitas and Manning left the Colts, etc. Never sey never.
Montana left the Niners because they had Steve Young. Favre left Green Bay because they wanted him to stay retired. Manning left rhe Colts because they had just drafted Andrew Luck with the No. 1 overall pick.
Jimmy won’t go for that. Why are all Patriots fan delusional to this point? I hear this all the time on 98.5 the sports hub or weei. He wants to start and soon. Once he’s a free agent he’s good as gone if Brady is still here. If NE extends Brady after this year it’ll be dead $$ the way they do bonus and money. BB is in no hurry to make a decision, so until then is what it is.
He’ll tag him anyway if he thinks he’s the guy, so it’s possible. Just throwing out speculation, it’s not the most likely outcome, but one that is possible.
By tag do you mean transition tag? Because the franchise tag for a QB will not be $12-$13 million. And also, I don’t see the Patriots paying close to $30 million for two QBs.
Whose writing all these news rumors anyway. Must be a bunch of millennials. They don’t know jack about what’s actively going on on with these franchises let alone what’s going on with the patriots.
Hmm I’m sure the writers whose job it is to follow a specific sports team have no idea what is going on, but an esteemed older fan, likely with no connections to the team, knows exactly what is going on. Please, do give us the latest rumors then.
I am guessing they are checking the prices of what teams want to offer for Grappolo, checking backup possibilities, checking who they may like in the draft. They are checking all of the scenarios possible. My guess is that they said he is off the table since no one offered what the Patriots wanted. So they are hoping that taking him off the trade block will help bring up his price. No way I would trade a 1st round pick for a guy who can walk or has the ability to command maybe more than he is worth in the Franchise tag.
