Tampa Bay Buccaneers News & Rumors

Minor NFL Transactions: 1/5/24

Here are Friday’s minor moves:

Baltimore Ravens

New Orleans Saints

New York Jets

  • Signed from practice squad: RB Xazavian Valladay

Pittsburgh Steelers

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Washington Commanders

A knee injury will send Fuller to IR, potentially wrapping the veteran cornerback’s second stint in Washington. The 2016 third-round pick, sent to Kansas City in the Alex Smith trade, returned in 2020 on a four-year, $40MM deal. With the Commanders having already fired Jack Del Rio and being set to clean house following their season finale, the 28-year-old corner could be headed elsewhere in free agency.

Worley has played 124 defensive snaps for the Ravens this season, starting two games. This will be the eighth-year corner’s second IR placement this season. If the Ravens qualify for Super Bowl LVIII, they would be eligible to activate Worley a second time. (Baltimore has four IR activations remaining, though one may need to be saved in case Mark Andrews can come back.) Worley is dealing with shoulder and ankle injuries.

Updated 2024 NFL Draft Order

It took the Bears until Week 18 for the No. 1 draft slot to become a reality; the Panthers did not make them wait that long this year. Carolina’s struggles will give Chicago the No. 1 overall pick for a second straight year. How the Bears will proceed with that pick will become one of the NFL’s defining 2024 storylines.

The Cardinals’ unexpected conquest in Philadelphia knocked them down two slots in the 2024 draft order. As a result, the Commanders — who resided in the fourth position before the Patriots’ Christmas Eve upset ended the Russell Wilson era in Denver — hold the No. 2 pick going into the regular season’s final Sunday.

The Commanders benched Sam Howell in back-to-back weeks and were set to, prior to a midweek Jacoby Brissett setback, shelve him for Week 17 as well. The Ron Rivera era is in its final days, with front office changes likely as well. A Commanders-Caleb Williams connection has emerged, which would make Washington quite interested in what Chicago does at No. 1 overall — or key another round of Bears talks about dropping from 1 to 2, which took place with the Texans this offseason. With the Bears likely considering another Justin Fields season and the Cardinals having Kyler Murray tied to a $46.1MM-per-year contract, the Commanders are suddenly a team to watch regarding a QB investment.

Bill Belichick is also perched as a key 2024 domino, but with the legendary HC not eager to leave New England, one of the most important decisions in franchise history awaits Robert Kraft. Belichick or his replacement could hold a top-three pick in 2024, though another Pats win — they have the Jets in Week 18 — would complicate an effort to land a top-tier QB prospect.

Entering Week 18, here is how the 2024 draft order looks:

  1. Chicago Bears (via Panthers)
  2. Washington Commanders: 4-12
  3. New England Patriots: 4-12
  4. Arizona Cardinals: 4-12
  5. New York Giants: 5-11

Alualu is set to make his Lions debut after signing earlier this month. Given the injury issues Detroit has faced up front, the 36-year-old has the chance to see playing time through the close of the regular season and into the playoffs. Alualu expressed a desire to continue playing with the Steelers this offseason, but he remained a free agent deep into the year. His tenure in the Motor City could help boost his free agent stock if he wishes to remain in the league in 2024, though.

Buccaneers OC Dave Canales On HC Radar?

The Buccaneers have enjoyed a late surge in the 2023 season, and the team is positioned to once again win the NFC South. A large part of the their success is due to the play of quarterback Baker Mayfield, but also the performance of the coach overseeing their offense.

OC Dave Canales joined the Buccaneers this offseason after a lengthy tenure with the Seahawks. The 42-year-old interviewed twice with Baltimore, but he ultimately took the Tampa Bay opening in the first coordinator posting of his NFL coaching career. Things have gone well so far, considering the team’s four-game winning streak and the value Mayfield has shown in his debut Bucs campaign.

The former No. 1 pick has played his way into a signficant raise in 2024, something which could very well come from a Tampa Bay extension. Canales may not be in place by the start of next season, however. ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reports he is a candidate for the 2024 head coaching cycle. That adds him to the list of offensive staffers likely to receive interviews in the winter.

Lions OC Ben Johnson is arguably the top name on the market this year, and he has already been linked to multiple openings. Enjoying a successful return to the NFL coaching ranks, Ravens offensive coordinator Todd Monken has likewise had his name floated as a HC candidate. Canales could represent a third option from an OC background for teams in search of help on that side of the ball.

Tampa Bay has had an up-and-down campaign in 2023, leading to a number of middling statistical outputs. The team’s struggles in the ground game from last season have persisted under Canales; the Bucs rank 30th in the league with an average of only 89 rushing yards per contest. The team has been better through the air, though, which has resulted in a mid-pack performance in terms of scoring (21.7 points per game).

Tampa Bay’s output has increased during the team’s current hot streak, which has no doubt helped Canales’ case for earning HC consideration. Still, the fact he will have only one season of coordinator experience by the time the 2024 cycle kicks off will hurt his chances compared to many other candidates. A strong final two weeks of the campaign, along with an impressive showing in the postseason (should the team qualify) could further bolster his odds of receiving a look for a head coach position in the near future, however.

Updated 2024 NFL Draft Order

While the Panthers, Cardinals and Commanders continued their losing ways in Week 16, the Patriots’ effort in Denver shook up the top of the 2024 draft. New England has dropped from second to fourth in the ’24 order.

In a strange spot in which Broncos fans and and undoubtedly many Pats supporters wanted the Russell Wilson-driven comeback to succeed, Chad Ryland‘s 56-yard game-winning field goal dropped New England out of the No. 2 spot, injecting doubt about the team’s ability to nab a top-flight QB prospect without trading up next year.

The Bears (via the Panthers) remain atop the table, holding a one-game lead on the Cardinals. Carolina closes its season with two games against eight-win teams — the Jaguars and Buccaneers. Arizona will face Philadelphia and Seattle, and with Carolina’s strength of schedule at .522 and Arizona’s at .561, the draft-order tiebreaker reaffirms the Bears’ placement on the doorstep of entering a second straight offseason holding a No. 1 overall pick. The Justin Fields matter remains an important big-picture NFL topic, but GM Ryan Poles is close to having his pick of the 2024 QB prospects.

It is not clear if the Commanders will be interested in a quarterback in the first round, but they will have a new regime running the show. The last time Washington held a top-three pick (2020), it passed on Tua Tagovailoa and Justin Herbert due to having drafted Dwayne Haskins in the 2019 first round. With Sam Howell struggling as of late, Josh Harris‘ next set of decision-makers may want to bring in their own prospect. The Cardinals could stand in the Commanders’ way, via another trade in the top three, but suddenly Washington could be a player for a 2024 first-round QB.

Ahead of Week 17, here is how the 2024 draft order looks:

  1. Chicago Bears (via Panthers)
  2. Arizona Cardinals: 3-12
  3. Washington Commanders: 4-11
  4. New England Patriots: 4-11
  5. New York Giants: 5-10
  6. Los Angeles Chargers: 5-10
  7. Tennessee Titans: 5-10
  8. Chicago Bears: 6-9
  9. New York Jets: 6-9
  10. Atlanta Falcons: 7-8
  11. New Orleans Saints: 7-8
  12. Green Bay Packers: 7-8
  13. Las Vegas Raiders: 7-8
  14. Denver Broncos: 7-8
  15. Minnesota Vikings: 7-8
  16. Arizona Cardinals (via Texans)
  17. Pittsburgh Steelers: 8-7
  18. Cincinnati Bengals: 8-7
  19. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: 8-7
  20. Indianapolis Colts: 8-7
  21. Seattle Seahawks: 8-7
  22. Jacksonville Jaguars: 8-7
  23. Los Angeles Rams: 8-7
  24. Buffalo Bills: 9-6
  25. Kansas City Chiefs: 9-6
  26. Dallas Cowboys: 10-5
  27. Houston Texans (via Browns)
  28. Detroit Lions: 11-4
  29. Miami Dolphins: 11-4
  30. Philadelphia Eagles: 11-4
  31. San Francisco 49ers: 11-4
  32. Baltimore Ravens: 12-3

Buccaneers Hope To Retain WR Mike Evans

Talks on a new deal during the summer did not produce an agreement for Mike Evans, leaving him as a pending free agent entering the season. The uber-consistent wideout has had another strong campaign, though, upping his value on a third Tampa Bay pact.

The Buccaneers want to retain Evans, Dianna Russini of The Athletic writes (subscription required). Efforts were made to ensure he would be in the fold beyond 2023, but little traction was found before the four-time Pro Bowler’s self-imposed Week 1 deadline arrived. Evans has been a major factor in the Bucs’ offense this year, however, including the team’s three-game win streak entering Sunday’s action.

The former first-rounder has already eclipsed the 1,000-yard receiving mark, meaning he has hit that threshold every season in his 10-year career. Evans has also scored double-digit touchdowns for the fifth time in 2023, and his pair of scores in today’s game has him in position to set a new personal best in that regard. To no surprise, then, Russini notes that Evans’ asking price has likely risen compared to where things stood in the offseason.

The Texas A&M product is playing out the end of his five-year, $82.5MM pact signed in 2018. The $16.5MM AAV of that deal sits well below the top of the market given the monster contracts a number of wideouts have signed in recent years. At the age of 30, it will be interesting to see how much term Evans will be looking for on a new pact in addition to compensation. Working out a new deal would replace the void years on his current pact, which calls for a cap charge of over $12MM in 2024.

Tampa Bay already has a pricey WR deal on the books, though, with Chris Godwin set to carry a cap hit of over $27.5MM next year. Extending him could lower that figure, but doing so would require committing future resources at the position to someone other than Evans. The latter was mentioned in trade talks at the deadline, but he was retained and a November report suggested Tampa Bay was willing to negotiate a new deal ahead of free agency.

Retaining Evans would provide valuable continuity to an offense which faces quarterback uncertainty at the moment. Baker Mayfield is firmly on the extension radar, though, and a new pact for him will no doubt include a considerable raise from his 2023 compensation. Whether or not Evans will be in place for the Bucs’ 2024 offense will be a major storyline for the team after the campaign has come to a close.

Bucs Interested In Baker Mayfield Extension

In Tampa due in large part to the extension Tom Brady signed — one that created a $35.1MM dead-money hit this offseason due to void years — Baker Mayfield expressed interest in staying beyond this season. The Buccaneers, who added Mayfield as a way to save money this offseason, are coming around on the resurgent quarterback.

The team has shown “definite interest” in an extension that keeps Mayfield around beyond this season, CBS Sports’ Jonathan Jones reports. Both Jason Licht and Todd Bowles are believed to be onboard with a second Mayfield contract, according to the Tampa Bay Times’ Rick Stroud. Although Stroud notes no discussions have commenced, those appear on tap.

Earlier this month, Mayfield said he is interested in sticking around. Days after expressing that desire for another Bucs deal, he put together the first perfect passer rating by a visiting quarterback in the history of Lambeau Field. Mayfield slicing up the Packers’ defense for 380 yards in Week 15 preceded a Saints Thursday-night loss to the Rams. The Bucs control their own destiny in the NFC South, and ESPN.com’s Adam Schefter adds the former No. 1 overall pick can earn a $1MM bonus if Tampa Bay repeats as division champion. That is on top of the $2MM he can earn by playing 85% of the Bucs’ offensive snaps this season.

The 2017 Heisman winner is finishing out a one-year, $4MM contract — one that has already begun paying out incentives. Mayfield would also have an interesting opportunity ahead of him — the chance to test free agency coming off a much better season — the QB remains high on the prospect of re-signing. The Bucs have exclusive negotiating rights with their starter until the March legal tampering period, and NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport adds the team has seen a more mature Mayfield, who has meshed in the locker room.

I mean, that would be great,” Mayfield said, via Jones during an NFL Today segment, of the prospect of re-signing. “But winning takes care of a lot of that. So we’ll handle that after the year. But that’s up to my agent and obviously the people here to decide. And so all I can do is control what I can and put myself in the best position to have options.

… Understanding that this is somewhere where I can revive my career and enjoy it. That’s what made the decision to come here so easy. The pieces around the staff, the organization, knowing that they were going to put me in the best position to thrive.”

The Bucs have been able to re-sign a few key players despite letting them hit the market this decade. Cornerstone defenders Shaquil Barrett, Carlton Davis and Jamel Dean all reupped with the team after making it to the tampering period unsigned, but Mayfield being a quarterback makes the timeline here a bit riskier. The Bucs not having a deal in place by the time the 2024 league year begins would run the risk of another team outbidding them.

The Giants and Seahawks did not take that risk this year, respectively re-signing Daniel Jones and Geno Smith to new deals before the 2023 league year. Both could be relevant here. At 28, Mayfield is two years older than Jones but four years Smith’s junior. The Giants’ Jones deal (four years, $160MM) drew rampant scrutiny, but Mayfield does have a longer track record of success.

While Mayfield’s woeful Panthers stretch and injury-plagued Browns finale will undoubtedly come up as reasons for a midlevel contract, Smith displayed a much longer stretch of mediocrity and had settled into backup roles. He re-signed on a three-year, $75MM accord this offseason. Working with former Seahawks QBs coach Dave Canales, Mayfield could be poised to eclipse that in AAV and, more importantly, guaranteed money. The Seahawks only guaranteed Smith $27.3MM at signing, providing flexibility. It may well take more from the Bucs to keep Mayfield.

After carrying an NFL-most $81.5MM in dead money this year, the Bucs will have some more room in 2024. They are projected to hold $47MM-plus in cap space (11th in the NFL) next year. Mayfield needed to beat out Kyle Trask to become Brady’s successor this season. How he performs down the stretch will factor into the Bucs’ plans, and he was once on the doorstep of a Browns extension before seeing his value tank. Tampa Bay also has Mike Evans and Antoine Winfield Jr. as free agents-to-be. But the sixth-year passer is moving close to a much better Bucs contract.
