Seattle Seahawks News & Rumors

Seahawks To Release Damon Harrison

Seahawks defensive tackle Damon Harrison asked for his release, and the team will oblige his request, according to Tom Pelissero of NFL.com (on Twitter). For Snacks, the final straw was his healthy scratch for Sunday’s game against the Rams.

We’re going to talk [on Monday],” Carroll said after the game. “I just know that he was disappointed that he wasn’t active for this game. That’s what we’re talking about.”

Even if that conversation happens, it probably won’t change much. Harrison, a first-team All-Pro in 2016, was leapfrogged by the return of Bryan Mone, and that left him feeling slighted.

Didn’t want to [leave Seattle] but it’s time,” Harrison tweeted. “I came here to help and I’ve done that and now it’s time to move on. I came back this year to play and that’s all I want. Team is back healthy and playing really well..it’s my time to head out. Still all love and respect for the ‘Hawks!

In typical Harrison fashion, he performed as a solid run-stuffer with less-than-solid showings on passing plays. Pro Football Focus gave him an overall score of 68.1 — his 81.7 ground grade was weighed down by his 47.9 passing mark. Mone, meanwhile, has been more balanced with 61.6 and 63.1 scores.

Harrison leaves Seattle with nine tackles and a forced fumble in six games. Meanwhile, the Seahawks — sans Snacks — will roll into the playoffs as the NFC West champs.

NFC West Rumors: Fitzgerald, Gould, Reed

Speculating about Larry Fitzgerald‘s future has become something of a holiday tradition over the past few seasons. The surefire Hall-of-Famer did say earlier this year that if the Cardinals were to win Super Bowl LV, he would ride off into the sunset, but Arizona’s hopes for its first Lombardi Trophy suffered a major blow in an upset loss to the 49ers last night.

So will Fitz be back in 2021? As Rachel Gossen of ArizonaSports.com writes, head coach Kliff Kingsbury said he believes Fitzgerald could play for another four seasons, but Fitzgerald himself was noncommittal.

“I haven’t really given it much thought to be honest with you,” he said. Though Fitzgerald did add that it will be nice to have fans back in the stands when it’s safe, Kingsbury downplayed the notion that Fitzgerald would return just to receive a proper sendoff from the Cardinals’ faithful.

As we wait to see whether one of the best receivers in NFL history will call it a career, and as the Cards focus on keeping their fading playoff hopes alive, let’s round up a few more notes from the NFC West:

  • The 49ers have a big decision to make on kicker Robbie Gould this week. Per the four-year extension Gould signed in 2019, San Francisco has until January 2 to pick up an option that would guarantee $2.25MM of Gould’s $4.5MM 2021 salary. Gould had hit 90.5% of his field goal attempts heading into last night’s matchup with Arizona, but he missed two FGA’s and a PAT in a 20-12 win that could have been more decisive. However, head coach Kyle Shanahan said the performance will not impact the team’s decision on Gould’s contract. “You got to look at the body of work, and Robbie has been unbelievable,” Shanahan said (Twitter link via Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area).
  • Claimed off waivers from the division-rival 49ers in August, Seahawks CB D.J. Reed has been a great find for Seattle. In eight games (six starts), Reed has lined up both in the slot and outside the numbers and has accumulated 49 tackles, two interceptions, and six passes defensed while yielding a modest 77.9 passer rating as the nearest defender (via NFL Next Gen stats). Though the 5-9 Reed does not fit the mold of the big-bodied specimens that Seattle generally prefers at the outside corner positions, Brady Henderson of ESPN.com thinks his presence could make the club more amenable to moving on from contract-year players Quinton Dunbar and Shaquill Griffin. Reed will be entering the final year of his rookie deal in 2021.
  • As Jourdan Rodrigue of The Athletic points out, the Rams would be about $26MM over the 2021 salary cap if the cap is decreased to $175MM as many expect. So while the club can certainly restructure the contracts of players like Robert Woods and Cooper Kupp to create space, it will also have tough decisions to make on pending free agents. Rodrigue posits that, if DC Brandon Staley gets hired as a head coach, he may try to bring safety John Johnson and outside linebacker Leonard Floyd with him, though Los Angeles will doubtlessly prioritize re-ups with both players. Meanwhile, Rodrigue sees players like WR Josh Reynolds and TE Gerald Everett signing elsewhere this offseason.

Seahawks Activate TE Greg Olsen From IR

Greg Olsen will return in time for the Seahawks-Rams rematch. The veteran tight end has made a quicker-than-expected recovery from another foot injury and is back on Seattle’s active roster.

The Seahawks activated Olsen from IR five weeks after he suffered a plantar fascia tear. Signed to a one-year deal, Olsen had worked as Seattle’s starting tight end before his latest foot injury.

Olsen, 35, fractured his right foot in 2017 and ’18 and later tore plantar fascia in that same foot last year. This time, Olsen injured his left foot. Overall, Olsen has missed 22 games since foot trouble sidetracked his career. But he will provide help to a Seattle passing game that will no longer have Josh Gordon available. Gordon was set to return in Week 16, but another off-field setback will prevent that from taking place.

In what could be his final stretch of NFL action, Olsen will be on hand to help the Seahawks attempt to clinch the NFC West. He caught 23 passes for 224 yards and one touchdown prior to the injury.

Seahawks To Keep Josh Gordon On Roster

The Seahawks won’t have Josh Gordon on the field this week, but head coach Pete Carroll says they will continue to keep him on the roster for the time being (Twitter link via Bob Condotta of The Seattle Times). Gordon was on the cusp of reinstatement before it was all 86’d by the league office earlier this week.

Gordon reportedly suffered a setback in his battle with substance abuse. Carroll declined to provide details on what happened, though he noted that Gordon is “frustrated” by the situation. The Seahawks, for their part, are undoubtedly disappointed, but they won’t give up on the ultra-talented wide receiver.

Despite Gordon’s latest indefinite ban — the ninth suspension of his career — the Seahawks re-signed him on a one-year deal in September. And, with word of his reinstatement, they were eager to see him serve as the No. 3 receiver behind D.K. Metcalf and Tyler Lockett. Instead, they’ll continue to use David Moore as one of their top targets, with support from rookie Freddie Swain.

The Seahawks continue to be intrigued by his undeniable talent, but he is getting farther and farther away from his tremendous 2013 with the Browns. That was Gordon’s signature season with 87 catches for an NFL-leading 1,646 yards and nine touchdowns. Then, for the next two years, Gordon was out of football. Even with all the stops and starts, Gordon continued to flash. When he joined the Patriots in 2018, he managed 40 grabs for 720 yards and three TDs in just eleven games. Then, in December of that year, he was hit with yet another indefinite suspension.

The Seahawks, sans Gordon, will face the Rams on Sunday afternoon.

Quinton Dunbar To Undergo Surgery

Quinton Dunbar will not return from the Seahawks’ IR list this season. The veteran cornerback will undergo a surgery that will sideline him until 2021, Pete Carroll said (via the Seattle Times’ Bob Condotta, on Twitter).

A knee injury sidelined Dunbar last month; he has been out since Week 9. This news comes a week after Dunbar returned to practice. The former UDFA is due to be a free agent in March.

Acquired from Washington for a fifth-round pick, Dunbar encountered a legal issue this offseason but ended up avoiding charges and a suspension. The sixth-year veteran started six Seahawks games but did not play as well as he did during his final Washington campaign. After a four-INT 2019 season that featured a 61.2 passer rating allowed on passes thrown his way, Dunbar allowed a 111.0 passer rating on 54 targets this year.

This is a bad break for the 28-year-old defender, who was discussing an extension with the Bruce Allen-led Washington front office before the franchise changed regimes. He will head into free agency with less momentum than he had after his 2019 breakthrough.

Seattle also has Tre Flowers on IR but has received positive results from waiver claim D.J. Reed lately. The ex-49ers corner broke up a season-high three passes Sunday, intercepted another and recovered a fumble against Washington.

No Reinstatement For Seahawks’ Josh Gordon

Josh Gordon won’t be making his return this week after all. The Seahawks were notified by the league office that he has not satisfied all terms of his conditional reinstatement (Twitter link via Bob Condotta of The Seattle Times).

Gordon has suffered a setback in his battle with substance abuse, Tom Pelissero of NFL.com (on Twitter) hears. The wide receiver will be permitted to attend team meetings and individual workouts, but he’ll be barred from practices or games until the matter is resolved.

Unfortunately, this is familiar territory for Gordon, who has been suspended nine times as a pro — mostly for from substance-abuse violations. Still, he excelled in a limited sample with the Seahawks last year, and the team happily re-signed him with the hope that he could serve as the team’s No. 3 receiver behind D.K. Metcalf and Tyler Lockett. Without Gordon, they’ll continue to use David Moore as one of the leading supporters, plus rookie Freddie Swain.

Gordon, 29, caught 27 passes for 426 yards and a touchdown in eleven games for the Pats and Seahawks last year. In his five Seattle games, he averaged an eye-popping 19.9 yards per grab.

The Seahawks waived fellow wide receiver Penny Hart to make room for Gordon earlier this week. Hart remains unsigned, so the Seahawks may look to bring him back in the coming days.

Seahawks Activate Josh Gordon

Josh Gordon: Activated. The Seahawks have returned the wide receiver to the roster, setting the stage for his 2020 debut.

Gordon’s indefinite suspension for substance-abuse and performance-enhancing drug violations kept him away from the team. On Dec. 3, the NFL lifted his ban and cleared him to practice starting this week. Gordon is reportedly in excellent shape and ready to contribute to the 10-4 Seahawks.

The former All-Pro has been suspended nine times since his NFL career began in 2012. Most of those suspensions have stemmed from substance-abuse policy violations. In eleven games with the Pats and Seahawks last season, Gordon caught 27 passes for 426 yards and a touchdown. His yards-per-catch average was a stellar 19.9 in his five Seahawks games, and Pete Carroll is eager to see more of the same from Gordon.

I’m anxious to see how he fits in,” Carroll said this week. “He’s a really impressive athlete, big kid, you know, and moves so well and so gracefully. I’m anxious to see how he looks quickness-wise with everybody else. Last year he jumped in and it was immediately obvious that he could compete.”

Gordon’s debut could come on Sunday when the Seahawks face the Rams in Seattle.
