Sunday NFL Transactions: AFC East

Listed below are the Sunday roster moves for the four AFC East teams. Following the 53-man roster cutdown deadline yesterday, many teams will make slight tweaks to their rosters, claiming players off waivers or signing guys who clear waivers. Those transactions for the Bills, Dolphins, Patriots, and Jets are noted below.

Additionally, as of 12:00pm CT today, teams can begin constructing their 10-man practice squads. You can check out our glossary entry on practice squads to brush up on those changes, as well as all the other guidelines that govern the 10-man units, whose players practice with the team but aren’t eligible to suit up on Sundays.

Patriots Make Roster Cuts

The Patriots are the latest team to move to 53 players by making the following transactions:

New England kept only three true wide receivers on its initial roster, meaning the club will almost surely be searching for more options on the waiver wire.

Patriots Sign TE Will Tye To Practice Squad

Tye met with the Patriots on Wednesday and it didn’t take long for a deal to come together. It was expected that Tye would land a 53-man roster spot somewhere in the NFL, so this is a bit of a boon for the Pats. Terms of his deal are not yet known, but it would make sense for him to be earning more than your average p-squad player.

Tye, 25, was a serviceable tight end for the Giants in 2015 and 2016. He appeared to be in line for a decent-sized role when he landed with the Jets earlier this month, but things did not work out that way. Instead, Austin Seferian-Jenkins heated up while Tye slipped on the depth chart.

The tight end met with the Chiefs and Ravens after getting cut by the Jets, but he did not sign with either club. Now, the Pats have Tye on the practice field and the timing is probably not coincidental. The Patriots face the Jets on Sunday at MetLife Stadium.

AFC East Notes: Pats, Tye, Fins, Landry, Bills

Free agent tight end Will Tye took a meeting with the Patriots today, according to Mike Reiss of ESPN.com (Twitter link). Waived by the Jets during final cutdowns, Tye has had a busy week: he worked out for the Chiefs last Friday before auditioning for the Ravens yesterday. Evan Baylis, a fellow tight end who went undrafted earlier this year, was also in town, per Reiss. New England currently has three tight ends on its roster in Rob Gronkowski, Dwayne Allen, and Jacob Hollister.

Here’s more from the AFC East:

  • While Jarvis Landry won’t face any legal ramifications after battery charges against him were dropped last month, the Dolphins wide receiver will still meet with NFL regarding the allegations on October 24, reports Josina Anderson of ESPN.com (Twitter link). Both Landry and his girlfriend have refuted the accusations, but the league has often punished players even when no official charges are filed, and the NFL reportedly has video of the incident in question. From an on-field perspective, Landry is a pending free agent who has engaged in no substantive extension talks with Miami.
  • Linebacker David Harris will face his former club when the Patriots play the Jets in Week 6, but Harris may not be long for the New England roster, as Reiss details in examining Harris’ lack of play time. Harris is essentially being retained for his leadership abilities, as Reiss opined last week, and the veteran defender has played only seven snaps in 2017. A lack of base packages and Harris slow speed and subpar acumen in pass coverage have lead to a decreased role, and Harris could be released when fellow ‘backer Shea McClellin returns from injured reserve later this year.
  • Given that the Dolphins rank 31st in offensive DVOA and 32nd in points scored, Miami could potentially “refit” its offense in 2018, reports Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald. Not much can be done about the club’s lackluster efforts in-season, as benching players could create locker room dysfunction. But changes could come next year, and the most obvious would be Ryan Tannehill returning to replace quarterback Jay Cutler. Allowing Landry to walk in free agency and reinforcing the offensive line could also be on the Dolphins’ itinerary.
  • The Bills worked out Baylis and fellow tight end Sam Cotton, linebacker Folarin Orimolade, and defensive backs Jordan Dangerfield and Harold Jones-Quartey on Tuesday, per veteran NFL reporter Howard Balzer (Twitter links). Of that group, Jones-Quartey has the most NFL experience, as he stated 12 games for the Bears a season ago.

Ravens Meet With TE Will Tye

Tye, 25, was a serviceable tight end for the Giants from 2015-16, as he averaged 45 receptions, 430 yards, and two touchdowns per year during that span. Big Blue waived him during final roster cutdowns, however, and he went crosstown to the Jets. Tye didn’t last long with Gang Green, though, as the Jets cut him last week. Although he’s only been a free agent for one week, Tye has already drawn interest, as he met with the Chiefs on Friday.

Baltimore currently has four tight ends on its roster: Ben Watson, Nick Boyle, Maxx Williams, and wide receiver convert Vince Mayle. Watson and Boyle have played the majority of the offensive snaps for the Ravens, while Watson has been the club’s primary receiving threat with 18 receptions for 148 yards and one touchdown.

Both Watson and Williams have been affected by injury issues lately, which could explain Tye’s visit to Baltimore. The 36-year-old Watson didn’t practice early last week while he dealt with a calf ailment, but ultimately played in the Ravens’ contest against the Raiders. Williams, meanwhile, has been sidelined for Baltimore’s past two games with a ankle injury.

Chiefs Host TE Will Tye On Visit

Former Giants and Jets tight end Will Tye visited the Chiefs on Friday, according to Field Yates of ESPN.com (on Twitter). Yates termed the meeting as some “Friday due diligence,” so it doesn’t sound like we should bank on a deal coming together right away. Will Tye (vertical)

Tye’s time with the Giants came to an end in September when he was cut during roster cutdowns. The Meadowlands’ other team claimed him on waivers the next day, but he was put on the curb in early October.

Since averaged 45 receptions, 430 yards, and two touchdowns in his two Giants seasons. In his short Jets stint, he had just four catches for 38 yards in three games.

The Chiefs are already pretty well set at tight end with starter Travis Kelce and backups Demetrius Harris and Ross Travis. They also have Orson Charles on the practice squad in the event of an injury.

Tye, 26 in November, started 17 games for the Giants over the past two seasons. He was waived during roster cutdowns but the Jets claimed him 24 hours later. Since entering the league as an undrafted free agent in 2015, Tye averaged 45 receptions, 430 yards, and two touchdowns for the Giants, but he had just four catches for 38 yards in three games for Gang Green..

Tye’s roster spot may be filled by the return of wide receiver Jalin Marshall. Marshall is eligible to return this week after serving a four-game ban for Adderall.

Even with Tye out of the picture, the Jets still have four tight ends on the roster in Austin Seferian-Jenkins, Neal Sterling, Eric Tomlinson, and Jordan Leggett.

Jets Claim Will Tye

The Jets have claimed former Giants tight end Will Tye, according to ESPN’s Field Yates (via Twitter).

Tye, 27, had started 17 games for the Giants over the past two seasons. Since entering the league as an undrafted free agent in 2015, Tye has averaged 45 receptions, 430 yards, and two touchdowns per year.

After drafting Evan Engram in the first round of this year’s draft, Big Blue did not have as much need for Tye. Gang Green, on the other hand, could use some tight end depth, especially while Austin Seferian-Jenkins serves a two-game suspension to open the season. ASJ has had a nice offseason, and the Jets do have a promising rookie, Jordan Leggett, waiting in the wings, but adding another reliable option at the tight end position makes plenty of sense.
