Patriots Bring Back RB Tyler Gaffney https://www.profootballrumors.com/2021/05/patriots-bring-back-rb-tyler-gaffney https://www.profootballrumors.com/2021/05/patriots-bring-back-rb-tyler-gaffney#comments Thu, 20 May 2021 19:44:18 +0000 https://www.profootballrumors.com/?p=216179 Tyler Gaffney resurfaced in the NFL last year, parlaying a late-summer workout into a practice squad gig with the 49ers. The former minor league baseball player, however, will return to the NFL team with which he is most associated.

The Patriots are signing the veteran running back, Ian Rapoport of NFL.com tweets. The Pats employed Gaffney from 2014-17, picking him up off waivers after the Panthers cut him. New England will now give the 30-year-old back another opportunity.

A former 24th-round Pittsburgh Pirates draft choice, Gaffney has seen far more game action in baseball. Yet to play in an NFL regular-season game, the Stanford alum left football for farm-system life in 2018. He split time between the Pirates’ High-A and Double-A teams that year, slashing .291/.391/.470 with the Pirates’ High-A team before struggling with the higher-level ballclub. Following that season, Gaffney made the decision to return to football for a second time.

Although Gaffney collected two Super Bowl rings during his first stint with the Pats, his most notable football contributions came at Stanford. Gaffney rushed for 1,709 yards and 21 touchdowns as a senior in 2013, a season that came after he spent 2012 in the Pirates’ minor league system. The 49ers signed Gaffney in August but released him in January.

WR Tyler Gaffney Returns To Baseball https://www.profootballrumors.com/2018/04/patriots-tyler-gaffney-returns-baseball https://www.profootballrumors.com/2018/04/patriots-tyler-gaffney-returns-baseball#comments Fri, 20 Apr 2018 19:14:49 +0000 https://www.profootballrumors.com/?p=104322 You won’t be seeing Tyler Gaffney on the pages of Pro Football Rumors, but you may find him on MLB Trade Rumors in time. The former Panthers, Patriots, and Jaguars wide receiver is going back to baseball, as MLB.com’s Adam Berry writes.

My dream has been the big leagues my whole life,” Gaffney said. “I think I’ve been tasting that every time I was hurt. You have time to think about things like that. So now I’m here, putting in my work. Now I’m here, five years later. I think the last couple years took their toll on my body. The heart wanted it. The body didn’t. I’m finally able to come back to baseball, the sport I love.

Gaffney was drafted by the Pirates in 2012 and played in their minor league system for a summer before returning to Stanford to play football. He is now returning to the Pirates to pursue his MLB dreams, starting with the Bradenton Pirates of the Florida State League.

Gaffney held promise as a sixth-round pick with the Panthers, but injuries prevented him from doing much on the field. Although he never recorded an official statistic, he does own two Super Bowl rings thanks to his time with the Pats.

Minor NFL Transactions: 8/11/17 https://www.profootballrumors.com/2017/08/minor-nfl-transactions-81117 https://www.profootballrumors.com/2017/08/minor-nfl-transactions-81117#comments Sat, 12 Aug 2017 02:34:00 +0000 https://www.profootballrumors.com/?p=74450 Here are today’s minor moves.

  • The Vikings placed Bishop Sankey on IR, Ian Rapoport of NFL.com reports (on Twitter). Minnesota signed the former Titans second-round pick to a reserve/futures contract in January, but an MRI Friday revealed Sankey tore an ACL. He will miss the season. Sankey hasn’t played in a game since 2015.
  • Cut by both the 49ers and Jets in August, Bruce Ellington caught on with a third team this month. The Texans agreed to terms with the wide receiver/return specialist, John McClain of the Houston Chronicle reports. The Jets waived Ellington with an injury designation, but a Friday workout with the Texans provided a green light for the franchise to sign him. The Texans are currently reeling at wideout. In addition to Will Fuller‘s absence, Braxton Miller and DeAndrew White aren’t practicing. Ellington missed all of last season with a torn hamstring.
  • The Jaguars signed veteran running back Jonathan Grimes and waived running back Tyler Gaffney with an injury designation, the team announced. Grimes is a five-year NFL veteran whose most notable work came as a backup for the Texans from 2012-16. He gained 455 yards from scrimmage in 2015, the final year Arian Foster suffered a severe injury.
  • Defensive end Keionta Davis agreed to terms with the Patriots, who cut cornerback Dwayne Thomas to make room, Mike Reiss of ESPN.com tweets. A rookie out of Chattanooga, Davis was invited to the Combine but wasn’t drafted or signed after the draft.
  • The Chargers re-signed tight end Matt Weiser, Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle reports (on Twitter). A University of Buffalo alum, Weiser spent time with the Bolts during their final San Diego camp last summer but was cut just before the season.
  • The Colts reached injury settlements with tight end (and former VCU basketball standout) Mo Alie-Cox and wideout Harvey Binford, Wilson tweets.
  • Mykkele Thompson‘s time as a Giants secondary cog could be coming to a close. After Big Blue cut Thompson — a fifth-round pick in 2015 — on Thursday, he cleared waivers. NJ.com’s Dan Duggan expects an injury settlement to follow (Twitter link). Duggan notes this Thompson is battling a minor quadriceps injury.

Minor NFL Transactions: 8/2/17 https://www.profootballrumors.com/2017/08/minor-nfl-transactions-8217 https://www.profootballrumors.com/2017/08/minor-nfl-transactions-8217#respond Wed, 02 Aug 2017 22:30:32 +0000 https://www.profootballrumors.com/?p=73482 Wednesday’s minor NFL transactions:

  • The Seahawks waived long snapper Nolan Frese, who appeared in all 16 of their regular-season games a year ago. An ankle injury kept the then-rookie out of action for the Seahawks’ two playoff contests, and Tyler Ott took over in Frese’s stead. Ott will again grab the reins with Frese out of the picture.
  • The Jaguars added running back Tyler Gaffney, who’s on his third club since Carolina used a sixth-round pick on him in 2014. The ex-Stanford rusher hadn’t caught on anywhere since New England cut him in March, which wasn’t the first time the Patriots parted with him. Gaffney was with the Pats in each of the previous three summers, though he failed to crack their season-opening roster in any of those years. He vacillated between the Pats’ active roster and practice squad last season.
  • The Panthers signed cornerback Devonte Johnson and waived wide receiver Cameron Posey. Johnson signed with the Falcons as an undrafted free agent in May 2016, and the former Weber State corner went on to spend time on their practice squad last year. He then had a brief stint with the Steelers this offseason. Posey, meanwhile, had only been a Panther since mid-June. He joined them as an undrafted free agent from Purdue.
  • The Buccaneers signed wide receiver Shaq Hill and waived recently added rookie wideout Jhajuan Seales. Hill was a Texan for a short period during the spring, when he signed with them as an undrafted free agent out of Eastern Washington. Seales will now look for his third team since going undrafted from Oklahoma State. He initially signed with the Bears, who cut him, and then hooked on with the Bucs this past weekend. The union proved to be fleeting.
  • The Colts signed offensive tackle and Arturo Uzdavinis and waived fellow OT Jerry Ugokwe. Uzdavinis is up to his sixth club since he went undrafted from Tulane a year ago, having previously been with the Texans, Bears, Jaguars, Lions and Vikings. Ugokwe’s time with the Colts is up after nearly three months. The undrafted rookie from William & Mary inked a deal with them May 4.
  • The Eagles cut cornerback Randall Goforth after reaching an injury settlement. Goforth, a rookie UDFA from UCLA, suffered a season-ending ACL tear last week.

  • The Patriots released running back Tyler Gaffney, Field Yates of ESPN.com tweets. Gaffney has an extensive history with the Patriots but hasn’t played in a game. He spent the past three summers with the team, failing to make New England’s 53-man roster out of camp in each. He vacillated between the Pats’ active roster and practice squad last year, so if history is any indication, a reunion at could ensue at some point later this year.
  • The Chargers re-signed previously non-tendered defensive end Tenny Palepoi, according to a team announcement. Palepoi missed the entire 2015 season with a foot injury but returned to action in 2016. He had 13 tackles in 13 games but wound up missing the last three contests due to a PED suspension. He still has to finish out that ban by sitting out one game in 2017.
  • Another Bolts move: ERFA wide receiver Geremy Davis signed his tender.
  • The Panthers announce they’ve re-signed cornerback Teddy Williams to a one-year extension. Mainly utilized in a special teams role, Williams played in only three games last year due to a knee injury. In 2015, he appeared in all 16 regular-season contests for the NFC champions.
  • Long snapper Jon Condo re-signed with the Raiders. Condo’s been the Silver and Black’s long snapper since the 2007 season after breaking into the NFL with the 2005 Cowboys. Given that long snappers have a precise salary range — 14 of them earn between $1MM and $1.15MM per year — it’s fairly easy to project Condo’s next contract’s AAV. The 36-year-old is the Raiders’ second-longest-tenured player behind Sebastian Janikowski.
  • Cody Parkey will have some competition with the Browns this summer. Cleveland added CFL kicker Brett Maher from the CFL. The 27-year-old hasn’t appeared in an NFL game yet. He’s kicked in Canada for the past three seasons, spending 2016 with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. Maher made 41 of 50 field goal tries for Hamilton. Parkey, 24, hit 20 of his 25 attempts and made 20 of 21 PATs.
  • The Redskins announced the re-signing of left tackle Ty Nsekhe. Washington placed an ERFA tender on Nsekhe, who at 31 is much older than players normally involved in these transactions. Nsekhe spent the past two seasons with Washington, starting in six games in that span. Four of those starts came last season while Trent Williams was serving a substance-abuse suspension.
  • After the Nick Folk signing created a stacked Buccaneers kicker depth chart, the team released John Lunsford, Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times tweets. Folk and Roberto Aguayo will battle for the Bucs’ kicker job, leaving Lunsford without a role.

Patriots Sign Nine To Reserve/Futures Contracts https://www.profootballrumors.com/2017/02/patriots-sign-nine-to-reservefutures-contracts https://www.profootballrumors.com/2017/02/patriots-sign-nine-to-reservefutures-contracts#comments Wed, 08 Feb 2017 00:45:43 +0000 https://pfr.traderumors.com/?p=52485 Patriots coach Bill Belichick started a “no days off!” chant during today’s victory parade, and that sentiment was confirmed hours later when the team announced that they had signed the majority of their practice squad to reserve/futures contracts (via Patriots.com):

Rob Housler (Vertical)The team also inked tight end Rob Housler to a contract. The team didn’t sign fullback Glenn Gronkowski or wideout DeAndrew White, although that could change in the coming days or weeks.

Housler is probably the most notable name on the list, as the tight end has five NFL seasons under his belt. The former third-round pick was actually a staple in the Cardinals lineup from 2011 through 2014, averaging nearly 14 games a season. The tight end was especially productive in 2012 and 2013, combining for 84 receptions, 871 yards, and one touchdown in 28 games. Since then, the tight end bounced between the Bears and Browns before sitting out the entire 2016 campaign.

Otherwise, Kilgo has the most experience having played in 18 games for the Broncos between 2015 and 2016. Douglas (16 games, six starts), Barker (five games), Hamilton (three games), and Bates (one game) have also seen the field for at least one NFL game. Both Gaffney and Lucien proved to be intriguing prospects for the Patriots during this past preseason.

  • A day after cutting Tyler Gaffney, the Patriots are re-signing the running back and will place him on their practice squad, reports Doug Kyed of NESN (Twitter link). PFR’s Zach Links suggested Thursday that the Pats were likely to re-sign Gaffney, who lost his roster spot with the activation of fellow rusher Dion Lewis from the PUP list.
  • The Packers have added tight end Beau Sandland to their practice squad and cut running back Brandon Burks, according to Rob Demovsky of ESPN.com. Sandland went to Carolina in the seventh round of this year’s draft, but the Panthers waived him from their practice squad Wednesday. Burks has been in and out of the Green Bay organization since it signed him in May as an undrafted free agent from Troy.
  • The Jets waived wide receiver Titus Davis from their reserve/left squad list, Rich Cimini of ESPN.com tweets. Davis, who spent time with four different teams after going undrafted in 2015, retired in August.

Patriots Release RB Tyler Gaffney https://www.profootballrumors.com/2016/11/patriots-release-rb-tyler-gaffney https://www.profootballrumors.com/2016/11/patriots-release-rb-tyler-gaffney#respond Thu, 10 Nov 2016 21:46:51 +0000 https://pfr.traderumors.com/?p=43879 The Patriots have released running back Tyler Gaffney, according to Doug Kyed of NESN.com (on Twitter). This could be a sign of good things to come for New England as Gaffney’s release is likely paving the way for a Dion Lewis return. Tyler Gaffney

Gaffney, 25, was a sixth-round pick in the 2014 draft, but various injuries have held him back over the last few years. The Patriots claimed Gaffney off waivers from the Panthers during his rookie season, and stashed him on injured reserve in each of the next two years. After being waived with an injury settlement in September, Gaffney signed on with New England’s practice squad in mid-October. Although he was bumped to the 53-man roster recently, he still hasn’t seen the NFL field.

Gaffney was expected to serve as a depth option behind LeGarrette Blount, James White, Brandon Bolden, and D.J. Foster. Now, he’s out of the picture altogether as Lewis gears up for his highly-anticipated return. Given his injury history, it seems likely that New England could sneak him through waivers and stash him on the practice squad again.

Because it had already had an empty roster spot, New England did not need to make a corresponding transaction.Tyler Gaffney

[RELATED: Dion Lewis Returns To Practice]

Gaffney, 25, was a sixth-round pick in the 2014 draft, but various injuries have left him unable to appear in a single game during his career. The Patriots claimed Gaffney off waivers from the Panthers during his rookie season, and stashed him on injured reserve in each of the next two years. After being waived with an injury settlement in September, Gaffney signed on with New England’s practice squad in mid-October.

If he’s active on Sunday against the Bills, Gaffney will serve as a depth option behind LeGarrette Blount, James White, Brandon Bolden, and D.J. Foster, while also likely playing on special teams. Gaffney’s roster spot could be in danger if and when Dion Lewis returns from the PUP list — Lewis returned to practice earlier this week, meaning the Patriots have a three-week window during which they can activate Lewis.

Given that Gaffney went unsigned for more than a month earlier this year, the Patriots likely believe they can pass him through waivers and place him back on the taxi squad if Lewis comes back soon, as Doug Kyed of NESN tweets.
