Chargers To Sign DT Tyeler Davison

The defensive tackle spot has been the source of plenty of turnover recently for the Chargers, and the team is making another move at the position. Los Angeles is signing Tyeler Davison off of the Browns’ practice squad, reports ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler (Twitter link).

The 30-year-old joined Cleveland’s taxi squad last month, with the expectation that he would soon be elevated to the active roster. That didn’t take place, as his most recent game action remains last year’s regular season. Davison played a career-low 12 games with the Falcons in 2021, but started 11 of them as he has remained a full-time starter for much of his NFL tenure.

The former fifth-rounder was released by the Falcons in March, ending his three-year stay in Atlanta. That was preceded by four years with the Saints. Overall, Davison has racked up 216 tackles and five sacks across his time in the NFC South. After the Cleveland signing failed to result in playing time, this Chargers deal is likely to work out differently.

Los Angeles waived Jerry Tillery after the former first-rounder struggled to meet expectations. He was nevertheless a prized commodity around the league, with eight teams putting in claims on him and the division-rival Raiders ultimately being awarded the Notre Dame product. That left a spot along the defensive interior for the Chargers to fill, but injuries have complicated their situation.

Veteran Christian Covington and rookie Otito Ogbonnia are expected to miss the remainder of the campaign, which led to an expectation a pickup of some kind would be in the making. Davison should have at least a rotational role available to him, though he has plenty of experience logging a first-team workload as well.

Despite a number of offseason moves aimed at improving their defense, the Chargers have yet to take a step forward in the ground game in particular. The team ranks 30th in the NFL allowing an average of just under 147 rushing yards per game, a figure Davison will look to help improve when he makes his 2022 debut.

Browns To Sign DT Tyeler Davison

Not long after trading for Deion Jones, the Browns are adding another former Falcons defensive starter. Tyeler Davison is joining Cleveland’s practice squad, Tom Pelissero of NFL.com tweets.

Although Davison will begin his Browns run on their P-squad, the team plans to promote the veteran starter soon. Davison, who has started 86 games with the Falcons and Saints from 2015-21, has not been with a team since his Atlanta release in March. The Colts auditioned Jones on Monday, Joel Erickson of the Indianapolis Star tweets.

These Atlanta imports will arrive after Austin Ekeler shredded the Browns’ defense for 173 rushing yards in Week 5. A week earlier, the largely Cordarrelle Patterson-less Falcons used the ground game to hand the Browns a loss. Cleveland now ranks 28th against the run. The team lost second-year linebacker starter Anthony Walker against the Steelers in Week 3 and did not do much to add help at its needy defensive tackle spot this offseason, despite holding the NFL’s most cap space for months.

Davison, 30, will not eat into Cleveland’s cap room much, and he is a bit removed from his best seasons. Pro Football Focus viewed Davison as a plus run-stopper during the late 2010s but was not especially high on the veteran’s work during his final two Falcons seasons. Atlanta released Davison after decreasing his playing time last year. The 309-pound defender played 43% of the Falcons’ defensive snaps in 2021. While it represented a slight playing-time reduction, it was nearly in line with his previous starter years in the NFC South.

The former Saints fifth-round pick signed a three-year, $12MM Falcons deal during Dan Quinn‘s time in Georgia. The Falcons were running a 4-3 scheme at that point; the Saints ran a 4-3 set during Davison’s four-season New Orleans run. The Browns use a 4-3 scheme and moved on from their two primary D-tackles from last season — Malik Jackson and Malik McDowell — in the offseason. Davison may not supplant starters Taven Bryan or Jordan Elliott immediately, but he should provide a decent depth piece for a defense that features proven performers at every other position.

Falcons Release Tyeler Davison

The Falcons have made a cost-cutting move along the defensive front. The team announced that they have released defensive tackle Tyeler Davison.  

The move incurs a dead cap charge of roughly $1.2MM, but creates just under $3.7MM in savings. The 29-year-old was a fifth round pick of the Saints in 2015. He spent his first four seasons in New Orleans, then went to the rival Falcons on a one-year deal in 2019.

That contract was followed up by a three-year, $12MM deal with Atlanta one season later. He accepted a pay cut in year two of the pact, a sign that the team may have been willing to cut ties, as they have now done. In 2021, he registered 30 tackles in 12 games.

Most notably for Davison, his playing time decreased significantly as the year wore on. He was on the field for a career-low 358 snaps, which represented just 43% of the team’s defensive plays. Playing time was opened up for Anthony Rush at the position.

The move is the second such one for the Falcons’ front seven, as last month, the team parted ways with edge rusher Dante Fowler. Neither move should be considered surprising, given the fact that Atlanta ranked 27 in the league against the run (132 yards per game) and last in sacks (17).

Falcons Give Tyeler Davison Three-Year Extension

UPDATE, 5:53pm: We’ve now got the terms for the deal. Davison is getting a three-year, $12MM pact with $4.5MM guaranteed, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network tweets. Considering he made only $895K last year, this is a pretty nice pay-raise for the 27-year-old Fresno State product.

4:57pm: A source tells Vaughn McClure of ESPN.com, the Falcons are close a three-year contract extension with defensive tackle Tyeler Davison. Davison signed a one-year contract with Atlanta last offseason and proved to be a productive member of their defense.

Originally a fifth-round pick by the Saints in 2015, Davison quickly earned playing time as a rotational interior lineman capable of manning the nose tackle position. Over the first four years of his career in New Orleans, Davison became a starting interior lineman for the Saints, starting 43 games from 2016-2018. Like most nose tackles, Davison is most effective against the run game, only contributing 3.5 sacks over his time with the Saints.

In his lone season with the Falcons, Davison continued his trend of being a healthy contributor along the Falcons front, recording a career-high 55 tackles, tying his career-best mark of 4 tackles for loss, and adding a sack as well.

South Rumors: Texans, Falcons, Saints

The Texans have received positive health news on two offensive players, as both receiver Will Fuller and left tackle Matt Kalil are expected to be ready for the regular season after sustaining injuries in 2018, per Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle (all Twitter links). Fuller averaged a career-high 15.7 yards per reception in seven games before suffering a torn ACL, but he’s now recovering nicely. Kalil, who inked a one-year deal with Houston after being released by Carolina, missed all of last year while dealing with a knee issue, but general manager Brian Gaine says Kalil is expected to compete with Julien Davenport to start on Deshaun Watson‘s blindside.

  • Alabama State offensive tackle Tytus Howard is a second-round target of the Falcons, tweets Tony Pauline of DraftAnalyst.net. Daniel Jeremiah of NFL.com lauds Howard’s size (6’2′”, 322) and ability to “explode out of his stance,” but notes potential concerns about Howard’s level of competition in the FCS. Atlanta owns the 45th pick, so Howard could certainly be available when the Falcons make their second-round selection. Although Atlanta recently extended incumbent right tackle Ty Sambrailo, his new contract is essentially a one-year deal with multiple team options. Howard has also met with the Jets during the pre-draft process.
  • Defensive tackle Tyeler Davison‘s one-year deal with the Falcons will qualify as a minimum salary benefit contract, according to D. Orlando Ledbetter of the Atlanta Journal Constitution. Davison will collect an $895K base salary ($110K guaranteed) and a $90K signing bonus, but he’ll only carry the salary cap charge of a second-year veteran plus his signing bonus — a total of $660K. A fifth-round pick in the 2015 draft, Davison started 48 games over the past four seasons in New Orleans, and will now give Atlanta a run-stuffing option alongside fellow defensive tackle Grady Jarrett.
  • Saints cornerback Ken Crawley is planning to sign his original round restricted free agent tender when New Orleans begins its offseason program on Monday, as Josh Katzenstein of NOLA.com writes. As of yet, Crawley has not received any interest from any rival clubs, and isn’t expected to until Friday’s deadline for RFAs to sign offer sheets. Crawley is now scheduled to earn $2.025MM for the 2019 campaign, but none of that total is guaranteed, an important distinction given that Crawley isn’t a lock to make the Saints’ roster after finishing as a bottom-three cornerback last season, per Pro Football Focus.

Falcons To Sign Tyeler Davison

One of the top remaining defenders is off the market. The Falcons are signing defensive tackle Tyeler Davison, a source told Ian Rapoport of NFL Network (Twitter link).

It’ll be a one-year deal, Rapoport notes. The Falcons’ run defense struggled mightily last season, and they’re clearly hoping Davison will help with that. The Falcons already have one of the league’s best defensive tackles in Grady Jarrett, so anything Davison provides will be a bonus. Davison comes from the division rival Saints after spending the first four years of his career in New Orleans.

Davison started 43 games for the Saints the past three seasons, so this is a significant move. Last season, Davison had 23 tackle, two sacks, and one forced fumble in 14 games. He played about 41 percent of the defensive snaps. A Fresno State product, Davison was drafted in the fifth round back in 2015. He received average marks from Pro Football Focus, grading out as their 83rd-best defensive lineman. The Saints signed defensive tackle Malcom Brown away from the Patriots at the beginning of free agency, so the writing was on the wall that they’d be moving on from Davison.
