Steelers Release Mike Adams

The Steelers announced that they have released offensive tackle Mike Adams with a failed physical designation. Kicker Ty Long and running back Abou Toure were also released. Mike Adams OT (vertical)

Adams, a former second-round pick, has had a disappointing career since the team used a second-round selection on him in 2012. In his first three years, Adams appeared in only 41 games with 20 starts. Last year, Adams did not take the field due to a back injury. The Steelers were apparently not hopeful about what Adams could do in 2016 and they have released him days after adding offensive tackle Jerald Hawkins in the fourth-round of the draft. Had he remained in Pittsburgh, Adams would have received a $873K salary for 2016.

In other Steelers news, the team declined the fifth-year option on outside linebacker Jarvis Jones earlier this week. Jones’ fifth-year option would have been worth $8.369MM, more money than the Steelers were willing to pay.

North Notes: Dalton, K. Long, Wolf, Steelers

Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton will meet with a specialist on Monday to determine his progress since fracturing his right thumb on December 13, but according to Geoff Hobson of Bengals.com, Dalton doesn’t know exactly what to expect from the visit. He hasn’t ruled himself out for a potential wild card game next weekend, but he isn’t expressing much optimism, either. “It depends how it feels and what the doctor says,” Dalton said today. “It’s hard to tell exactly how it feels. It’s getting better. That’s what they’re saying.”

Let’s dive into some more notes from the NFL’s two North divisions:

  • Kyle Long confirmed to reporters, including Patrick Finely of the Chicago Sun-Times, that he’ll be playing tackle for the Bears next season — but he still doesn’t know if he’ll man the right or left side. The former first-round pick slid out from guard to right tackle this season, and according to Pro Football Focus (subscription required), didn’t fare all that well, grading as the league’s 40th-best tackle.
  • Packers executive Eliot Wolf could have his “pick of jobs,” according to Neil Stratton of Inside the League (Twitter link), as both the Lions and the Browns could express interest. However, Wolf is also seen as the heir apparent to current Packers general manager Ted Thompson, so Wolf might not be too eager to jump ship just yet.
  • Getting a head start on possible offseason futures deals, the Steelers brought in kicker Ty Long, receiver Levi Norwood, and quarterback Phillip Sims for workouts, reports Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle (Twitter link).

Washington Makes Cuts, Down To 75 Players

The big news out of Washington today will be Jay Gruden‘s announcement that Kirk Cousins is heading into the year not just as the starter for Week 1, but as the starter for the 2015 season. However, “Kirk’s team,” as Gruden referred to it today, also made a series of roster moves to get down to the required 75-man roster in advance of tomorrow’s deadline.

One of today’s roster moves for Washington is the placement of pass rusher Junior Galette on injured reserve. Galette, who joined the club after being released by the Saints, tore his Achilles last week and will miss the entire 2015 campaign.

Washington Signs 12 Undrafted FAs

FRIDAY, 3:08pm: Washington has added another player to its undrafted free agent class, announcing today in a press release that the team has signed former Duke offensive lineman Takoby Cofield. Field Yates of ESPN.com reported earlier this week (via Twitter) that Cofield would receive $25K in guaranteed money as part of his deal.

THURSDAY, 3:10pm: Washington has announced several of its undrafted free agent signings, confirming the names of 11 players who are joining the team’s roster, according to a press release. Here are the newest additions for general manager Scot McCloughan and company:
