49ers To Sign LS Jon Weeks, Cut LS Taybor Pepper

The 49ers have landed a new long snapper. The team is signing veteran Jon Weeks, according to Aaron Wilson of KPRC2 in Houston. This news follows a report from earlier today that the 49ers were cutting Taybor Pepper, per Jennifer Lee Chan of NBC Sports Bay Area.

Weeks is inking a one-year deal worth $1.422MM, according to Wilson. The deal contains $200K in guaranteed money.

Weeks was the longest-tenured player in Texans history, as the long snapper had been with the organization since the 2010 season. Over that time, he’s appeared in 244 games for Houston, including a 2015 season where he earned his lone Pro Bowl nod. According to Wilson, the 39-year-old was hoping to stick with the Texans, but the organization is apparently content moving forward with Tucker Addington.

Weeks will be replacing Pepper, who spent the past five seasons as the 49ers long snapper. After getting into 20 games with the Packers and Dolphins to begin his career, Pepper got into 80 games during his stint in San Francisco. The veteran was set to enter the final season of a three-year extension he inked in 2023.

“Wanted to end my career with the 49ers, but I’ve still got some years left in the tank,” Pepper wrote on X. “Love all the amazing players I’ve gotten to share the field with during my time. I’ll deeply miss all of the amazing support staff that continue to keep the org moving.”

NFL Reserve/Futures Deals: 2/17/25

One reserve/futures deal to pass along:

Houston Texans

Interestingly, the Texans gave Tucker Addington some extra cash to join their offseason roster. NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reports that the long snapper got $10K in bonus money for putting pen to paper. The Sam Houston State has bounced around the NFL a bit during his career, getting into 10 games in stints with the Patriots, Commanders, and Dolphins.

Browns kicker Dustin Hopkins has made just 64.0% of his field goal attempts this season, which includes two misses from inside 40 yards. Patterson kicked for Cleveland when Hopkins was injured at the end of last season, and his addition to the practice squad indicates that head coach Kevin Stefanski is considering a similar change this year.

The Titans signed Narveson as insurance for starter Nick Folk, who is dealing with an injury, per NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo. Narveson began the season as the Packers’ kicker, but after missing five of his 12 field goal attempts, all of which came inside of 50 yards.

With Trevor Lawrence currently in concussion protocol, the Jaguars have added some QB depth to the organization. John Wolford brings four games of starting experience to Jacksonville, all coming with the Rams between 2020 and 2022. The Wake Forest product went 2-2 in those appearances, tossing one touchdown vs. five interceptions. He’ll slide in behind Mac Jones and C.J. Beathard in the franchise’s QB pecking order.

The Eagles added a veteran fullback to their roster in Khari Blasingame. The 28-year-old has appeared in 66 games since entering the league in 2019, collecting 131 yards from scrimmage on 24 carries. The Eagles recently lost part-time fullback Ben VanSumeren for the season, opening a role for a handful of blocking snaps per game.

Toney is set to make his debut for the regular season. The former first-round pick out of Florida has had a rocky first four years in the league, despite coming away with two Super Bowl rings in Kansas City. He was signed to the Browns’ practice squad just after the season opener and will be eligible to see game action with Cleveland in Week 11.

O’Donnell was added to the 49ers’ practice squad earlier this week given the chance of Mitch Wishnowsky missing time. The latter is now on injured reserve, ensuring at least a four-game absence. O’Donnell, 32, is a veteran of 145 games but Week 11 will mark his first regular season action since 2022.

Edwards served a four-game suspension for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy and is now eligible to be reinstated to the Texans’ active roster. Houston requested and received a one-game roster exemption to give Edwards an additional week to practice with the team before being added back to the 53-man roster.

Prince played under Brian Callahan in Cincinnati but has only played two games over the past two seasons. A six-game starter with the Dolphins and Bengals, Prince missed all of the 2020 season due to a COVID-19 opt-out and then all of the 2022 season due to injury.

The Vikings cut Tonyan from their 53-man roster earlier today, but because the NFC North mainstay is a vested veteran, he did not need to clear waivers before joining Minnesota’s practice squad. With T.J. Hockenson on the way back, Tonyan profiles as insurance.

This is a third chance for Marshall. The Panthers waived him after three seasons. No team claimed the former second-round pick, with Joe Brady‘s Bills passing. The 49ers took a flier soon after but released him last week.

Patriots Activate LB Sione Takitaki

The Patriots will be getting some much-needed reinforcement to the team’s linebacking corps this weekend. According to Patriots staff writer Evan Lazar, New England has officially activated linebacker Sione Takitaki. In addition, the team has promoted long snapper Tucker Addington and running back Terrell Jennings as standard gameday practice squad elevations.

Takitaki was signed by New England early into free agency after a five-year stint in Cleveland. A former third-round pick for the Browns in 2019, Takitaki was always a strong contributor while struggling to carve out a consistent role as a full-time starter. When signing with the Patriots, the veteran linebacker was reunited with former Browns staffers Eliot Wolf and Alonzo Highsmith.

Takitaki was signed to bolster a linebacking corps that was short on returning talent. Unfortunately, the 29-year-old defender has yet to contribute after being placed on the reserve/physically unable to perform list before the start of the season. His contributions can’t come soon enough as starting Patriots linebackers Jahlani Tavai and Raekwon McMillan currently rank 73rd and 79th, respectively, out of 79 graded linebackers in the NFL, per Pro Football Focus (subscription required).

Addington is being called up a day after signing to the practice squad as regular long snapper Joe Cardona heads into this week’s game with a questionable injury designation due to a calf issue. Rhamondre Stevenson has been ruled out for this weekend, so Jennings will join Antonio Gibson and JaMycal Hasty as options out of the offensive backfield.
