Latest On Commanders’ LT Situation

In 2023, quarterback Sam Howell was sacked a league-leading 65 times. That figure marked a franchise record for the Commanders, a team which has made a slew of changes on offense this season.

That includes second overall pick Jayden Daniels set to take over under center, along with multiple new faces up front. Washington added Tyler Biadasz and Nick Allegretti during free agency, and they are on track to start at center and left guard, respectively. Returnees Sam Cosmi and Andrew Wylie are set to reprise their respective positions on the right side of the line, but the left tackle spot remains wide open.

The Commanders released Charles Leno in March, ending his three-year run in the nation’s capital. The 32-year-old served as a full-time starter in 2021 and ’22, and he logged a first-team role when healthy last season. Washington used swing tackle Cornelius Lucas as his replacement for four games in 2023, and he is one of the candidates to take on blindside duties. Another is fellow veteran Trent Scott, who saw usage at right tackle in his debut Commanders season in 2023.

Washington waited until the third round of this year’s draft to select an offensive linemen, adding Brandon Coleman at No. 67. The TCU product saw time along the interior during his college tenure, but he also logged snaps at tackle. If he impresses this summer, he could get an extended look at the latter position. For now, though, nothing has been settled with respect to the competition for a first-team role.

“It’s still a little early to say how confident we are in anything,” offensive line coach Bobby Johnson said (via ESPN’s John Keim). “I’m pleased with the progress they’ve made. At this point, I don’t see any red flags that give me pause. But once again, it’s still early.”

Many positional battles along the offensive and defensive lines are, of course, not settled until padded practices in July and August take place alongside preseason action. For the Commanders, that will leave the left tackle spot undecided for at least a few more months. If a late-offseason free agent addition is deemed necessary, finances will not be an issue. Washington currently has $44.5MM in cap space, the second-most in the NFL.

Much of Daniels’ success at LSU (which included a Heisman-winning performance in 2023) was built on his mobility, and scrambling will no doubt be a consistent aspect of his play at the NFL level early on in particular. As Keim notes, Washington has also committed more to the run game than last season, and a running backs room now led by Austin Ekeler is in line to be notably involved as a result. Still, one of the team’s key questions over the summer will be the selection of a starting blindside protector for Daniels’ rookie campaign.

Thursday’s minor moves around the league:

Arizona Cardinals

Chicago Bears

Denver Broncos

New Orleans Saints

New York Giants

Washington Commanders

Woods and Cole both served as special teams contributors to start their careers. The former is making his first move outside the NFC North, having previously played for the Bears and Lions. Likewise, the latter is set for his first stint with a non-AFC South squad, after beginning his career with the Texans and Titans. They each bring considerable third phase experience to their new teams.

Sweeny, 27, is making the New York-to-Buffalo trek several have made before him recently. He will reunite with Giants head coach Brian Daboll, who served as the Bills’ offensive coordinator during their time together in Buffalo. Sweeny served in a backup role during each of his three heathy seasons to start his career, making a total of 18 catches for 165 yards and a touchdown. He will look to continue operating as a secondary option at the position in New York under Daboll as the Giants incorporate Pro Bowler Darren Waller into their new-look offense.

Steelers Move WR Calvin Austin, S Damontae Kazee To IR

One of the two rookie wideouts the Steelers drafted this year will not start the season on time. Calvin Austin III joins safety Damontae Kazee in being moved to IR ahead of Week 1.

Because Pittsburgh carried both through to IR following Tuesday’s roster cut, each can return after four games. The NFL both increased the IR-return timetable from three games to four this season and, after unlimited IR comebacks could ensue in 2020 and 2021, limited players coming off IR to eight this year.

With Austin and Kazee shifting off the roster for the first four weeks, the Steelers re-signed linebacker Marcus Allen and offensive lineman Trent Scott. Allen has been with the team since 2018, while Scott — a Panthers spot starter over the past two seasons — initially caught on with Pittsburgh in May.

After flashing this offseason, Austin sustained a foot injury that has forced him to miss time. The Steelers took the Memphis in the fourth round (138th overall), doing so just before the Ravens planned to select him. The Austin pick came two rounds after Pittsburgh selected George Pickens. Pittsburgh’s second-rounder is expected to join Diontae Johnson and Chase Claypool as the team’s top receivers. The Steelers, as they are wont to do, reloaded in the draft at the position — after letting JuJu Smith-Schuster and James Washington walk in free agency.

The Steelers had prepared to place Kazee on IR since his injury in their preseason finale. A 15-game Cowboys starter last season, Kazee is expected to miss extensive time due to a wrist injury. The Steelers placed safety Karl Joseph on IR before the season, but because they waited until after setting their roster to shift Kazee to the injured list, the latter is eligible to return during the year.

Steelers Trim Roster To 53

The Steelers had a number of difficult decisions to make leading up to the 53-man roster deadline, including the status of Mason Rudolph. The team ended up holding on to the quarterback, but the front office still had to cut a number of players to get to the roster limit:

Marcus Allen, a 2018 fifth-round pick, appeared in 33 games for Pittsburgh over the past four seasons. Justin Layne was a 2019 third-round pick by the Steelers, with the majority of his 43 appearances coming on special teams. Anthony McFarland was also a former Steelers draft pick, while Trent Scott was brought in this offseason to compete for an OL spot. Joe Haeg started two of his 12 appearances for the Steelers in 2021.

Henry Mondeaux spent the past two seasons in Pittsburgh, getting into 26 total games (two starts). After mostly seeing a special teams role during his rookie campaign, the defensive tackle saw more opportunities on defense in 2021, finishing with 16 tackles and two sacks. Buddy Johnson was a fourth-round pick in the 2021 draft. The linebacker got into four games as a rookie, collecting two tackles. Carlos Davis was a seventh-round pick by the Steelers in 2020. The defensive tackle collected 11 tackles in 11 games.
