Injury Updates: Sunday

We don’t pass along news on every injury here at Pro Football Rumors, but we’ll keep tabs on those injuries that may be serious enough to warrant a player heading to IR, or his team making a roster move in order to make up for his absence.

This list will be updated as more information becomes available, as always, with news added to the top of the list as it trickles in.

Washington linebacker Adam Hayward will miss the rest of the season with a broken bone in his kneecap, reports Mike Jones of the Washington Post.
Texans‘ quarterback Ryan Mallett practiced and played with a right pectoral injury this past week, and will likely miss several weeks, reports John McClain of the Houston Chronicle (via Twitter). He will undergo an MRI to confirm, but the team expects Ryan Fitzpatrick to start next week against the Titans.
Dolphins‘ cornerback Jamar Taylor suffered a shoulder injury that could end his season, reports Omar Kelly of the Sun-Sentinel. If that is true, he will be the third Miami defensive back to have his season end this November.
NFL interception leader and Browns‘ safety Tashaun Gipson left the game with a knee injury that could sideline him for the remainder of the season, writes Tom Reed of Cleveland.com. He will undergo an MRI Monday to confirm the severeness of the injury.

Earlier Updates

Bengals’ offensive tackle Andre Smith exited today’s game against the Texans with a possible triceps injury. He will have an MRI on Monday to see the extent of the injury, reports Coley Harvey of ESPN (via Twitter). If Smith has a torn triceps, he will likely miss the remainder of the season.
Washington cornerback Tracy Porter joined a long list of defensive backs who were off the field when he exited with a right shoulder injury, reports Tarik El-Bashir of CSNWashington.com (via Twitter). Porter was ruled out for the game, according to Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle (via Twitter), and could leave the team thin at corner if he misses an extended period of time.
Titans‘ linebacker Kamerion Wimbley suffered a hamstring injury in the loss to the Eagles earlier today, reports Jim Wyatt of the Tennessean (via Twitter).
Dolphins‘ first-round pick Ja’Wuan James started at left tackle, but was forced out of the game due to a stinger and failed to return, writes James Walker of ESPN (via Twitter). With Branden Albert already out for the season, the team could be very thin at that position.

Maryland Notes: Canty, Leach, Roberts

Ravens defensive end Chris Canty isn’t too worried about the NFL ban on “non-standard and overbuilt face masks,” writes Aaron Wilson of The Baltimore Sun. Canty is required to wear a special facemask following a 2005 bar fight that resulted in a detached retina. The veteran will be allowed to apply for medical approval to wear “The Big Grille” (as it’s affectionately called).

“Not sure what the memo or new policy is, but it’s simple for me,” Canty said. “No eye shield and custom mask means I can’t play. Eye would be at risk.

“I invented it. It’s that simple. I can’t play without it. I can’t help it that other guys think it’s cool and they want to wear it, too. It’s a necessity for me.”

Former Ravens fullback Vonta Leach is hoping to catch on somewhere during training camp, writes Caleb Burggraaf of Robesonian.com. “It’s never easy going through free agency,” Leach said. “It’s just a waiting game. I probably won’t sign with a team until training camp.”
The Ravens may need to rely on a running back by committee approach if starter Ray Rice is suspended, says Jeff Zrebiec of The Baltimore Sun. Bernard Pierce would likely share a bulk of the carries with veteran Justin Forsett and fourth-rounder Lorenzo Taliaferro. The team also has Cierre Wood and Fitz Toussaint, and Zrebiec opines that “it would be foolish to completely dismiss their chances to make the team.”
Redskins wideout Andre Roberts told SiriusXM NFL Radio (via Twitter) that his decision to sign with Washington may have been different had he known DeSean Jackson was going to be on the team.
Rich Tandler and Tarik El-Bashir of CSNWashington.com examined whether the Redskins would carry a fullback on their 53-man roster. Tandler writes that incumbent Darrel Young could be left off, being replaced by tight ends Logan Paulsen and Niles Paul. El-Bashir has a tough time seeing Young not making the roster, especially considering his role in Alfred Morris‘s success.
Mike Jones of The Washington Post isn’t very confident in the Redskins secondary. The team has question marks at cornerback beyond DeAngelo Hall and David Amerson, with Tracy Porter and E.J. Biggers competing for the nickel back spot. At safety, the team has Brandon Meriweather and Ryan Clark playing on one-year deals, and the writer isn’t too optimistic about the young options behind them.

Redskins Sign Tracy Porter

SATURDAY, 9:56am: The deal is official and worth $6MM for two years, according to NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport (via Twitter).

THURSDAY, 12:52pm: The Redskins have agreed to terms with free agent cornerback Tracy Porter, according to Dianna Marie Russini of NBC Washington (on Twitter). The news was confirmed by Ian Rapoport of NFL Network (on Twitter).

Porter, 27, also met with the Giants this week but it appears that he’ll be suiting up for their divisional rival instead. The veteran was one of the few bright spots for the Raiders last season. While Oakland was starting to build a reputation as a hard-nosed defensive team, they were downright porous at times in 2013.

Remaining Options At Cornerback

The Aqib Talib contract is the latest free agent signing that has shaken up the NFL landscape, leaving few options at cornerback and many teams with a need at the position. There are still some very productive players, and even a few big names on the market that could fill those needs. Here’s a brief roundup:

Assuming Darrelle Revis gets cut by the Buccaneers, an assumption that seems safe at this point, he will become the top free agent left on the market. He could have many potential landing spots, and will most likely draw interest from the Patriots to replace Talib.
Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie was in negotiations to return to the Broncos, but the team has reportedly pulled their offer after signing Talib, according to Mike Klis of the Denver Post (via Twitter).
Tracy Porter is visiting with the Giants, reports Ian Rapoport of NFL.com (via Twitter). Porter was one of the few bright spots for the Raiders in 2013.
Charles Tillman and Cortland Finnegan are both veterans that could be available for small money on short term deals. Tillman was thought to be a fit with the Buccaneers before Verner signed there. Finnegan has not drawn much interest so far.
The Jets and Lions are both still in need of help at corner, and it would be risky to go into the draft without adding anything at the position.

Extra Points: Hawkins, Graham, Martin, Byrd

Aaron Wilson of National Football Post has the goods on Andrew Hawkins‘ $13.1MM offer sheet with the Browns. The deal would give the wide receiver a $3MM signing bonus and a 2014 base salary of $1.8MM guaranteed for skill and injury. In 2015, he has a $2.3MM base that is guaranteed for injury only. He has non-guaranteed bases of $2.5MM in ’16 and $2.6MM in ’17. More from around the NFL..

One team other than the Ravens to keep an eye on for cornerback Corey Graham is the Dolphins, tweets Adam Caplan of ESPN. There’s an opening now that Nolan Carroll is unsigned and Dimitri Patterson has been cut.
The Dolphins will carry about $959K in dead money after the Jonathan Martin trade, tweets Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald.
If DeMarcus Ware is still on the market after the initial wave of interest, the Packers could get involved, but that’s unlikely, tweets Rob Demovsky of ESPN. It sounds like the Broncos are the frontrunner for his services.
The Bills‘ best offer to Jairus Byrd was a yearly average of about $7.5MM, tweets Tim Graham of the Buffalo News.
The Colts had conversations with the Dolphins about Martin and the Vikings also showed interest, tweets Mike Garafolo of FOX Sports.
