Bengals Place DT Mike Daniels On IR

The Bengals will be further depleted at defensive tackle when they face the Jaguars on Sunday. They placed Mike Daniels on IR on Saturday.

Daniels, who signed with the Bengals this summer, suffered an elbow injury — one he aggravated during practice this week. Daniels managed a limited practice Thursday but was held out Friday. He will be down for at least three weeks now.

Cincinnati has been without perennial Pro Bowler Geno Atkins all season. Atkins took part in three limited workouts this week but has already been declared out for Week 4. The practice participation points to Atkins getting closer, having not been placed on IR despite what will be a four-week absence.

The team has fellow 2020 acquisitions D.J. Reader and Christian Covington healthy at defensive tackle. Daniels, however, had started both games in which he played this season.

To add help up front, the Bengals are promoting defensive tackle Freedom Akinmoladun. They will also elevate cornerback offensive lineman Alex Redmond and cornerback Torry McTyer from the practice squad.

Bengals Get Roster To 53

The Bengals became the latest team to get down to 53 on Saturday, releasing one player and waiving 23 others. We’ll recap the most notable names at the bottom:

Allen was drafted in the sixth-round by the Jaguars back in 2016, but didn’t appear in a game until injuries forced him to start three games at quarterback for the Broncos last year. He was decent in his first game under center but quickly declined before relinquishing the job to Drew Lock. He couldn’t beat out 2019 fourth-rounder Ryan Finley for the right to hold Joe Burrow‘s clipboard this season.

McTyer is a 2017 UDFA who started a handful of games at corner for the Dolphins in 2018 and appeared in five with the Bengals last year. McKenzie was a sixth-round pick of the Chiefs in 2018 who is best known for being the son of former Raiders GM Reggie McKenzie.

Bengals Sign CB Torry McTyer Off Chiefs’ Practice Squad

Torry McTyer will return to an NFL active roster. The Bengals will bring the third-year cornerback to their 53-man roster, plucking him off the Chiefs’ practice squad, Ian Rapoport of NFL.com tweets.

The Bengals placed cornerback Darius Phillips on IR to make room for McTyer’s arrival. The latter spent three-plus weeks on Kansas City’s practice squad, arriving in western Missouri after the Dolphins waived him on cutdown weekend.

A more committed Dolphins team used McTyer in 15 games last season, deploying the UNLV-produced defender as a starter in four 2018 games. Overall, McTyer has played in 22 NFL contests since arriving as a 2017 Dolphins UDFA.

Phillips has played in 18 Bengals games since arriving in Cincinnati as a 2018 fifth-round pick. A knee injury will send Phillips to IR, though the Bengals view the backup corner — who notched his first career interception in Week 3 — as a possible return candidate later this season, per The Athletic’s Paul Dehner Jr. (Twitter link).
