Ravens Sign WR Griff Whalen

The Ravens announced that they have signed wide receiver Griff Whalen. In related moves, the team cut offensive lineman Tony Bergstrom and released cornerback Sheldon Price from injured reserve.

Whalen, 27, spent the first four years of his career with the Colts before taking a mini-tour around the league in 2016. The bulk of his action last year came in eight games with the Chargers. He spent this past summer with the Ravens, but he missed the final cut in early September. He has now been called back at a time when Baltimore is in desperate need of wide receiver depth. Breshad Perriman is in concussion protocol while Jeremy Maclin and Mike Wallace have not been able to practice fully.

The Ravens traded a conditional draft pick to the Cardinals in September to acquire Bergstrom. After the offensive lineman played in just 32 snaps on offense and 13 on special teams, the conditions for the pick transfer might not have been met.

Cardinals, Ravens Complete Trade

The Cardinals have traded offensive lineman Tony Bergstrom to the Ravens for a seventh-round pick, a source tells ESPN.com’s Adam Schefter (on Twitter). Bergstrom signed with the Cardinals back in May.

Bergstrom appeared in 15 games as a backup for the Texans last year, but he did not see a lot of burn. The 31-year-old offers experience at both tackle and guard, so he could be a worthwhile piece for Baltimore. He’s not a world beater, but his versatility could come in handy for a Ravens offensive line that has been decimated by injuries.

Already, the Ravens have lost offensive linemen Alex Lewis and Nico Siragusa for the entire season.

Cardinals Sign OL Tony Bergstrom

The Cardinals have signed Tony Bergstrom to a one-year deal, according to a team announcement. The offensive lineman spent last year with Houston, but he was released by the team last month.

Bergstrom appeared in 15 games as a backup for the Texans, but he did not see a whole lot of burn. The soon-to-be 31-year-old offers experience at both tackle and guard, so he could see increased opportunities in Houston.

The Cardinals added two offensive linemen in last week’s draft by selecting Pittsburgh’s Dorian Johnson in the fourth round and Vanderbilt’s Will Holden in the fifth round. With the two rookies and Bergstrom now in the fold, the Cardinals have 10+ offensive linemen under contract.

Texans Release OL Tony Bergstrom

The Texans are cutting offensive lineman Tony Bergstrom, a source tells Aaron Wilson of The Houston Chronicle (on Twitter). Cutting Bergstrom will save the club $2.875MM while leaving $375K of dead money against the cap.

One year ago, Bergstrom joined the Texans as a free agent, agreeing to a two-year, $5.75MM deal with $1.5MM guaranteed. He went on to appear in 15 games as a reserve, but didn’t see a lot of playing time in total. In the previous season, Bergstrom appeared in every game for the Raiders and made three starts.

Bergstrom turns 31 in May and was buried on Houston’s depth chart in 2016, so he won’t have big bucks thrown in his direction. However, he did an alright job filling in for the injured Rodney Hudson in 2015 and he offers experience at both tackle and guard. Bergstrom could get a look as line depth this summer, should he choose to continue playing.

Tony Bergstrom, Texans Agree To Terms

Former Raiders reserve Tony Bergstrom looks to get a chance at replacing Ben Jones as the Texans’ center, agreeing to terms with Houston, John McClain of the Houston Chronicle reports (on Twitter).

Bergstrom’s agreement with the Texans is for two years, according to the Chronicle’s Aaron Wilson (via Twitter).

Houston’s been incredibly active in attempting to transform its offense, signing Brock Osweiler and Lamar Miller. But the Texans also lost Jones and guard Brandon Brooks today, when Jones reached an agreement with the Titans and Brooks opted to join the Eagles.

A third-round pick of the Raiders’ in 2012, Bergstrom’s served as line depth for the most part during his career. Bergstrom’s started four games, including three last season when he filled in for the injured Rodney Hudson. He also has played guard, which could be important given the Texans’ need at that position after Brooks defected to Philadelphia.

Despite entering only his fifth season, Bergstrom will turn 30 before his first prospective regular-season game with the Texans.
