49ers Work Out S Mike Tyson, Four Others

With the 49ers dealing with injuries throughout their roster, the team brought in several players for workouts today. Veteran NFL reporter Howard Balzer reports (via Twitter) that the team worked out safeties Mike Tyson and Tray Matthews, cornerback Terrell Sinkfield, offensive tackle Tyler Jones, and fullback Johnny Stanton.

The 49ers are likely to be without Richard Sherman and Dee Ford for multiple games, so it’s understandable that the team is seeking some reinforcement in their secondary. Tyson is probably the most notable name of the bunch (for football reasons, of course). The 2017 sixth-rounder appeared in 10 games for Houston in 2018. He joined the Packers this past offseason, but he was cut before the end of the preseason.

Tray Matthews, 25, has been hunting for a gig since graduating from Auburn in 2017. Sinkfield has bounced between the NFL and CFL since going undrafted out of Northern Iowa in 2013. The 29-year-old has yet to appear in an NFL game, and he has experience playing cornerback and wide receiver.

49ers offensive lineman Weston Richburg was recently placed on the IR, so they team is clearly looking for some blocking prowess from their auditionees. Jones is a 24-year-old rookie out of North Carolina State, while Stanton was a former quarterback at Nebraska.

Giants Cut Kyle Lauletta; Reach 53

The Giants waived quarterback Kyle Lauletta as a part of their moves to reach the 53-man roster limit. The move leaves Alex Tanney as the No. 3 QB behind starter Eli Manning and first-round pick Daniel Jones.

Between an October arrest and a poor professional debut, Lauletta dug himself into a bit of a hole. Although the 2018 fourth-round pick is just 24 and had enough upside to merit a mid-round selection, the 31-year-old Tanney edged him out in practice. This, perhaps, isn’t a huge surprise after the G-Men signed him to a two-year, $2.1MM contract with $775K guaranteed.

Besides Lauletta, here’s how the Giants got to the limit.

Thursday’s minor moves:

  • The Vikings have signed three participants from last week’s veteran combine – tight end Nick Truesdell, wide receiver Mitch Mathews and Terrell Sinkfield. Truesdell was most recently in the Arena Football League, but he did spend time on the Colts’ practice squad last season. Mathews, who went undrafted out of BYU last year, was on the Chiefs’ and Browns’ practice squads for multiple-month stints in 2016. Sinkfield is the only one of three with previous experience as a Viking, having logged some practice squad time with them last year. He bounced around four other NFL organizations from 2013-15 and has three years’ experience in the Canadian Football League.
  • Falcons offensive tackle Carter Bykowski has retired, reports Vaughn McClure of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Bykowski, whom the 49ers chose in the seventh round of the 2013 draft, joined the Falcons in 2016 after a stint in Minnesota. He didn’t appear in any regular-season games during his career.
