Chiefs Cut S Tedric Thompson

Tedric Thompson‘s stint with the Chiefs has come to an end. NFL.com’s Tom Pelissero of NFL.com’s reports (via Twitter) that Kansas City is cutting the safety. The team will elevate practice squad wideout Marcus Kemp to the active roster to take the open roster spot, via Herbie Teope of the Kansas City Star (on Twitter).

Thompson, a fourth-round pick in 2017, spent the first three seasons of his career with the Seahawks. He started 16 games for Seattle between the 2018 and 2019 seasons, collecting 76 tackles and three interceptions. However, a shoulder injury limited him to only six games in 2019, and he was released by the Seahawks back in March.

He ultimately landed with the Chiefs, where he’s served mostly in a rotational role. He’s fallen down the depth chart in recent weeks; since Week 5, he’s only played 22 defensive snaps, and he’s been a healthy scratch for the past two games. Thompson’s stint with the Chiefs will end with him having compiled 13 tackles in eight games.

Kemp has spent most of the past four seasons with the Chiefs organization. The 2017 undrafted free agent out of Hawaii has seen time in 24 career games, including seven this season. The 25-year-old has eight career tackles and a pair of catches on his resume.

Seahawks Waive S Tedric Thompson

Apr. 2: Contrary to the earlier report suggesting that Thompson had fully recovered from his torn labrum, Brady Henderson of ESPN.com says that the 25-year-old was waived with a failed-physical designation (Twitter link). Thompson has cleared waivers and is now free to sign with any team, but given his uncertain health status and the restrictive policies currently governing free agent physicals, he may not find a new home for a while.

Mar. 31: Tedric Thompson‘s time with the Seahawks is coming to an end. Seattle will waive the safety, according to Josina Anderson of ESPN.com (Twitter link).

We heard a couple of weeks ago that Thompson had been given permission to seek a trade, but obviously they weren’t able to find any takers. Thompson had been set to earn $2.3MM in 2020, and the Seahawks will save $2.1MM by cutting him. Thompson only appeared in six games last season because of a torn labrum, and a source tells Anderson that Thompson is now fully healthy. Before going down he had started all six games and had two interceptions, but received poor marks from Pro Football Focus.

Seattle drafted Thompson in the fourth-round out of Colorado back in 2017 and after playing sparingly as a rookie, he started ten games in 2018. The Seahawks’ defense was a bit of a disappointment last season, and Thompson was made especially expendable by their trade for safety Quandre Diggs last fall.

Thompson is still only 25, and with his recent starting experience he should be scooped up pretty quickly by another team. Seattle will roll with Diggs and Bradley McDougald as their starting safeties, and are hoping their recent trade for Quinton Dunbar will help bolster the secondary.

Seahawks Shopping Tedric Thompson

Seahawks free safety Tedric Thompson has been given permission to seek a trade, according to NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport (on Twitter). He adds that if they’re able to swing a deal, it’ll likely be for a late-round draft pick. 

Thompson saw his 2019 season cut short by a shoulder injury. Before that, he started in all six of their games and came away with two interceptions. Meanwhile, the advanced metrics were not high on his performance. At the time, Thompson was a bottom-five safety in the NFL, per Pro Football Focus.

The Seahawks did better in coverage without Thompson in the lineup, thanks in part to midseason trade pickup Quandre Diggs. Despite flashes of big-play ability, Thompson has not been consistent over three years with Seattle and he no longer fits into the club’s plans.

As it stands, Thompson is set to earn $2.3MM in 2020. If they don’t find a taker for him, they could release him instead to save $2.1MM.

Seahawks Place Tedric Thompson On IR

The Seahawks have placed safety Tedric Thompson on injured reserve with a shoulder injury, the club announced today. Veteran linebacker/defensive end Dekoda Watson has been signed to take Thompson’s spot on Seattle’s roster. Additionally, the Seahawks have designated tight end Ed Dickson to return from IR.

Thompson, a fourth-round pick in 2017, became a full-time starter last season and had started all six games for Seattle this year. While he’d posted two interceptions, Thompson had graded as a bottom-five safety league-wide, per Pro Football Focus. With trade acquisition Quandre Diggs dealing with a hamstring injury, rookie safety Marquise Blair is likely to start his third consecutive contest opposite Bradley McDougald, per Brady Henderson of ESPN.com.

Dickson, meanwhile, was originally slated to miss four-to-five weeks after undergoing knee surgery in early August, but he’s clearly well past that timeline. While he has returned to practice, Dickson is not expected to play in Week 9, as Pete Carroll indicated earlier this week. With fellow tight end Will Dissly already on injured reserve, Dickson could be in for immediate action as soon as he’s able to get back on the field.

Seahawks Sign 8 UDFAs

The Seahawks have always placed an emphasis on signing undrafted free agents that can make a difference and they hope they have unearthed a few gems in this year’s class. Today, the Seahawks announced the signing of eight UDFAs, along with deals for four of their draft picks. Here’s the full rundown:

Roos will receive a larger-than-usual $20K package for signing with Seattle, as Tom Pelissero of USA Today tweets. Roos, a 6’4″, 302 pound guard out of Purdue, was a four-year starter for the Boilermakers. Even though he was not invited to the NFL combine, the Seahawks kept an eye on him and quickly scooped him up after the draft.

As detailed by Matthew Martinez of the Star Telegram, Howard took an unorthodox route to the NFL. Coming out of high school in Texas, Howard didn’t garner any college consideration. After establishing himself at a JUCO college in California, Howard found his way to West Virginia where he finally got attention on a national level.

“I knew I was going to play in college, whether I had offers or not,” Howard said. “I knew it was going to happen, I just didn’t know the winding road would take me to West Virginia and I’d come full circle to train for the draft in my own backyard.”
