NFL Practice Squad Updates: 10/29/24

Here are the most recent practice squad transactions from around the NFL:

Arizona Cardinals

Carolina Panthers

Chicago Bears

Indianapolis Colts

Los Angeles Chargers

Miami Dolphins

Minnesota Vikings

New England Patriots

New Orleans Saints

New York Giants

Philadelphia Eagles

Pittsburgh Steelers

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Tennessee Titans

Washington Commanders

The Vikings cut Gaskin from their active roster on Tuesday, but as a vested veteran, he did not need to pass through waivers before re-signing to Minnesota’s practice squad. Gaskin played in the Vikings’ first five games this season, but has not appeared since October 6. His familiarity with the offense could lead to activations from the practice squad if Minnesota needs running back depth.

Herndon will join the Saints after playing in Jacksonville for six seasons, with 83 total appearances and 34 starts for the Jaguars since 2018. The veteran cornerback only started five games over the last two years, but played in 15 games for almost 900 snaps as a rotational member of the Jaguars’ secondary. His experience could lead to quick elevations from the practice squad once he learns the Saints’ defense.

The Commander signed the 30-year-old Hart to give them more depth at offensive tackle. The veteran has 67 starts and 98 total appearances over his eight-year career, though he hasn’t played in the NFL since a 2022 stint with the Bills.

Cincinnati Bengals

Cleveland Browns

Fleming saw time with Denver across each of the past three seasons. The 32-year-old alternated between right and left tackle during that span, and he remained on the team’s radar given his workout in September. Now Fleming, a veteran of 117 games and 62 starts, will be an option to handle a depth role along the O-line once he is elevated to the Broncos’ active roster.

Nijman underwent surgery to address a leg injury, and despite Dave Canales indicating the free agency pickup was a ways away from returning, he is back at practice barely a week later. It remains to be seen if Nijman will be able to suit up in Week 1, but he has some time here. The Panthers signed the ex-Packer blocker to be their swing tackle.

Grant will be able to suit up later this season, depending on the terms of the injury settlement. This transaction moves Grant off the Falcons’ roster. The former All-Pro return man has not played since the 2021 season, stacking the odds against him. He is going into what would be an age-32 season.

Free Agent

Strong was a surprising release by the Cardinals during the regular season last year. At the time, Strong was coming off of his strongest NFL campaign, but head coach Jonathan Gannon claimed that the release was what was “best for the team.” While we still don’t know the nature of the suspension, or whether or not it’s even related to his January release, we are aware that he will miss three games.

Saints Sign 16 UDFAs

After adding seven rookies in last weekend’s draft, the Saints have added a long list of undrafted free agents to their roster. The team announced the signing of 16 UDFAs:

  • Kyler Baugh, DT (Minnesota)
  • Millard Bradford, S (TCU)
  • Matthew Hayball, P (Vanderbilt)
  • Sincere Haynesworth, C (Tulane)
  • Kyle Hergel, G (Boston College)
  • Dallin Holker, TE (Colorado State)
  • Jermaine Jackson, WR (Idaho)
  • Trajan Jeffcoat, DE (Arkansas)
  • Lawrence Johnson, DB (SE Missouri St.)
  • Jacob Kibodi, RB (LA Lafayette)
  • Nate Latu, DE (Oklahoma State)
  • Nouri Nouili, G (Nebraska)
  • Rico Payton, CB (Pittsburgh State)
  • Kyle Sheets, WR (Slippery Rock)
  • Isaiah Stalbird, LB (South Dakota State)
  • Mason Tipton, WR (Yale)

Jermaine Jackson got $160K in guaranteed money to catch on with the Saints, per Nick Underhill of NewOrleans.Football. After finishing the 2022 campaign with more than 1,000 receiving yards, the Idaho product was limited to only 593 yards in 2023. However, he took on a larger special teams role, returning 18 kickoffs and 18 punts (including two punt returns for touchdowns). He’ll join a rookie receiver class that also includes fifth-round pick Bub Means and UDFA Kyle Sheets.

Isaiah Stalbird also got a significant payment from the Saints. Aaron Wilson of KPRC2 in Houston reports that the linebacker got a $10K signing bonus plus $100K in guaranteed salary. The SDSU standout finished his college career with 80 tackles, three sacks, and five pass breakups in 2023, and he also drew the eye of scouts during his Pro Day (which likely explains the lofty guarantees). The Saints used a fifth-round pick on Texas LB Jaylan Ford.
