A handful of playoff teams designated players for return from IR today, opening the 21-day window for activation. While there’s a chance these players are activated at some point during the postseason, they could also merely be providing the team with another body during practices.

Chargers Designate Alohi Gilman For Return

The Chargers have designated safety Alohi Gilman for return from injured reserve and opened his 21-day practice window, per The Athletic’s Daniel Popper.

Head coach Jim Harbaugh said that Gilman is “ready to roll,” indicating that he will be activated before the Chargers’ regular season finale on Sunday.

Gilman landed on injured reserve at the end of November with a hamstring injury after starting 10 of Los Angeles’ first 11 games this season. His return could not come at a better time for the Chargers, who just lost Elijah Molden for the season due to a broken fibula.

Gilman was having a solid season before his injury, though he has not been able to replicate his playmaking from last season. He recorded two interceptions, 10 passes defended, three forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries in 2023; this year, he has just one interception and four passes defended with no fumble production.

If all goes well in practice, the Chargers will use their eight and final regular season IR activation on Gilman, though they will receive two more for the playoffs.

One of those postseason activations could be for wide receiver Simi Fehoko, who has been on injured reserve since early November with an elbow injury.

Harbaugh said that Fehoko is “progressing really well,” per Popper. He has not been a major piece of the Chargers offense this year; he’s caught just six of his 16 targets, though all six have converted first downs for a career-high total of 106 yards. Fehoko has been a contributor on the kick and punt units, so he could see some playoff playing time on special teams if activated.

Chargers Place Junior Colson On IR, Designate Gus Edwards For Return

The Chargers have placed Junior Colson on injured reserve with an ankle injury, another setback for the rookie linebacker who dealt with appendicitis during training camp and missed Weeks 3 and 4 with a hamstring injury.

When healthy, Colson was a rotational contributor to the Chargers’ league-leading defense with a role on special teams. The third-round pick will now be sidelined for at least four weeks, with his earliest possible return coming on December 8 against the Chiefs.

The Chargers have plenty of linebacker depth on the roster with Troy Dye, Nick Niemann, and Jeremiah Jean-Baptiste backing up starters Denzel Perryman and Daiyan Henley.

Los Angeles also designated Gus Edwards to return from injured reserve on Wednesday. The veteran running back landed on IR in October with an ankle injury and is now headed towards a return to the backfield alongside fellow former Raven J.K. Dobbins. Edwards is unlikely to eat heavily into Dobbins’ workload, as he is averaging a career-low 3.0 yards per carry compared to Dobbins’ 4.9 YPC.

The Chargers made another addition to their offense by promoting Jalen Reagor to the active roster to replace Simi Fehoko, who was placed on injured reserve. Reagor signed with the Chargers’ practice squad in September and appeared in the team’s last three games. With Fehoko facing at least a four-game absence with an elbow injury, Reager will move to the 53-man roster to provide receiver depth alongside recently activated veteran DJ Chark.

As expected, Tyrion Davis-Price has landed back with the 49ers after getting cut by the big-league club earlier this week. The 2022 third-round pick has seen time in just one game for San Francisco this season, collecting 21 yards from scrimmage on six touches. He appeared in six games as a rookie, collecting 99 rushing yards. He’ll join Jeremy McNichols as the 49ers’ practice-squad options at RB.

A 2021 third-round pick, Rice started 10 games over his first two seasons. Although the Titans cut Zach Cunningham and let David Long sign with the Dolphins, they brought in Azeez Al-Shaair and have used second-year UDFA Jack Gibbens as starters this season. Rice has been strictly a backup, and a post-transaction tweet suggested the young defender was not too broken up about this Tennessee cut.

Hyder joined the Texans earlier this season. The 49ers had waived the rotational pass rusher after trading for Randy Gregory. Reuniting with DeMeco Ryans, Hyder spent much of his Texans stay on their practice squad. The team used the defensive end in two games this season, giving him 40 defensive snaps as a backup. Hyder would be eligible to return to Houston’s P-squad if he clears waivers.

The Chargers officially placed Mike Williams on injured reserve today, opening a roster spot. The front office didn’t take long filling his spot on the depth chart, snagging receiver Simi Fehoko from Pittsburgh’s practice squad. The former fifth-round pick spent the first two seasons of his career with the Cowboys, where he hauled in three catches in 10 games. The Stanford product also had a significant role on special teams during his time in Dallas.

Roy Lopez looked to be entrenched in Houston’s defense for the foreseeable future, with the former sixth-round pick starting 29 of his 33 appearances between 2021 and 2022. However, after collecting only 67 tackles and two sacks across those two seasons, he was waived/injured by the Texans at the end of the preseason. The defensive lineman caught on with Arizona’s practice squad late last week.

Cowboys Set 53-Man Roster

The Cowboys were busy today, with the organization announcing 36 roster moves as they reduced their team to 53 players:

Released:

Waived:

Placed on IR:

  • OT Josh Ball
  • WR David Durden
  • LB DeMarvion Overshown
  • TE John Stephens Jr.

According to Nick Harris of the team website, both long snapper Trent Sieg and cornerback C.J. Goodwin are expected to rejoin the active roster once the dust settles from this initial round of cuts.

Quinton Bohanna spent the past two years in Dallas after being selected in the sixth round of the 2021 draft. He got into 27 games (10 starts) over the past two years, collecting 29 tackles while playing both on defense and special teams. The Cowboys added first-round defensive tackle Mazi Smith this offseason, making Bohanna expendable.
