Redskins Work Out Seantrel Henderson

Veteran offensive tackle Seantrel Henderson, released by the Texans last year, worked out for the Redskins on Wednesday (Twitter link via ESPN.com’s Field Yates). Henderson could be a candidate for the 90-man offseason roster, giving the Redskins an interesting depth candidate for the year ahead.

Early in his career, he started in 26 contests for the Bills between 2014 and 2015 and proved to be a proficient blocker. However, things took a turn in later seasons.

Henderson was hit with a ten-game substance abuse policy suspension in 2017, his second ban after previously serving a four-game suspension. For his part, Henderson says he was only using marijuana to help treat symptoms of his Crohn’s disease.

Henderson hooked on with the Texans in 2018 and earned a re-up for 2019. But, after Week 1, the 28-year-old was benched, then waived in November. Henderson went on to audition for the Bills, Seahawks, and Ravens, but was unable to find a new club.

The Redskins’ O-Line, without Trent Williams, still managed to perform decently as a unit. This year, new head coach Ron Rivera and new OL coach John Matsko will look to build upon that and they’ll have a healthy Brandon Scherff to help the cause.

Seantrel Henderson To Visit Ravens

It’s become clear that despite Seantrel Henderson‘s limited work sample over the past two seasons, contenders are interested in the free agent tackle.

After his Seahawks visit, Henderson will meet with the Ravens, Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle tweets. This will make three meetings in less than a week for the former Bills and Texans blocker. The Bills hosted Henderson late last week.

Henderson has started one game in each of the past two seasons and has only played in five in that span. The Texans benched the 27-year-old lineman after Week 1 this year, doing so despite re-signing him in March. While the former seventh-round pick started 26 games for the Bills from 2014-15, he has been mostly a backup since.

The Ravens just lost starting center Matt Skura for the season and look set to plug rookie UDFA Patrick Mekari into their lineup. That would leave a swing spot open, but Baltimore also employs former starter James Hurst behind current edge blockers Ronnie Stanley and Orlando Brown. Hurst, however, also has guard experience and could fill in as an interior-line backup as well. Henderson would stand to provide an extra backup.

Seahawks Host T Seantrel Henderson

Despite starting only two games over the past two seasons, Seantrel Henderson is generating interest as a free agent. The Seahawks met with the unattached tackle, according to NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport (on Twitter).

Henderson visited the Bills recently but did not sign with his former team. The Texans released the sixth-year veteran from their NFI list last week.

Both Duane Brown and swing man George Fant were listed on Seattle’s injury report last week. Brown also missed time earlier this season. Henderson has played four games this year, starting for the Texans in Week 1 but playing sparingly after that. He started Houston’s first 2018 game, but a season-ending injury ended that brief first-string stay.

The former seventh-round draft pick has done well to stick in the NFL, first starting 26 games with the Bills from 2014-15 and then serving as a Buffalo backup. Teams are still interested in the former late-round investment, and it’s certainly possible Henderson lands with a contender soon.

Bills Host T Seantrel Henderson On Visit

Before an injury-plagued Texans tenure, Seantrel Henderson played four seasons with the Bills. The parties are considering a reunion.

Henderson made a visit to Buffalo to meet with his former team this week, Adam Schefter of ESPN.com tweets. The Texans cut the former seventh-round pick from their NFI list on Monday. The 27-year-old tackle played four seasons with the Bills from 2014-17.

A Miami alum, Henderson became an immediate starter in Buffalo. He opened his rookie season as a 16-game starter at right tackle opposite Cordy Glenn. Though after starting 10 games for the 2015 Bills, Henderson was shifted to a backup role. While he started Week 1 for the Texans in each of the past two seasons, Henderson would represent depth at this point for the Bills.

Buffalo, however, is shorthanded at right tackle currently. Ty Nsekhe is battling an ankle injury and will not play against the Broncos on Sunday. Nsekhe and second-round pick Cody Ford have both spent extensive time at right tackle this season, with the veteran playing 342 snaps and the rookie 365. Henderson played 64 snaps for Houston in Week 1 but did not start another game before being placed on the Texans’ NFI list.

Texans To Cut T Seantrel Henderson

Seantrel Henderson‘s Texans tenure did not end up going as planned, and the team ended the run on Monday. The Texans cut the veteran tackle from its NFI list, Ian Rapoport of NFL.com tweets.

Henderson played in four games this season but has spent most of the year on Houston’s NFI list due to a back injury. Despite Henderson missing 15 games last season, the Texans re-signed him to a one-year, $1.5MM deal.

The Texans made significant investments at tackle since, though, and now use Laremy Tunsil and first-round pick Tytus Howard at those spots. Henderson ended up being active for just five games during his two-year Texans tenure. This season, though, Henderson started one game and only played one offensive snap in his final three Texans contests. An ankle malady ended his 2018 season early.

Despite being a seventh-round pick, the 27-year-old blocker has enjoyed a lengthy NFL career. The Miami alum started 26 games during his first two seasons with the Bills before being used as a depth piece from 2016-17. He could represent a depth piece for an offensive line-needy team to close out this season.

Texans Sign OT Chris Clark

The Texans have signed offensive tackle Chris Clark and placed fellow offensive lineman Seantrel Henderson on the non-football injury list, according to Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle. Houston also waived quarterback Alex McGough.

Clark should be familiar with Houston, as he played from the Texans from 2015-17, starting 37 games during that time. Last season, the now-34-year-old Clark didn’t land a contact until the regular season was already underway, but ended up starting 15 games for the Panthers.

It’s unclear if Clark will be immediately called upon to start for Houston this time around. Incumbent right tackle Tytus Howard went down with a knee injury in Week 6 and will miss time, but he’s expected to return at some point this year. Clark, fellow new signee Dan Skipper, and Roderick Johnson all represent options to play on the right side of the Texans’ offensive line.

Henderson, 27, re-signed with Houston this offseason on a one-year, $1.5MM deal. He began the 2019 campaign as the Texans’ starting right tackle, but was benched after Week 1. Henderson is now dealing with a back injury, tweets Wilson, one that likely occurred away from the football field given that he was placed on NFI.

Texans’ Tytus Howard To Open At Guard

The Texans deployed one of the NFL’s worst offensive lines last season and are likely to return multiple starters from the group that yielded 62 an NFL-most sacks. But the team looks to be planning on getting a key addition into the lineup in an unexpected fashion.

Tytus Howard is the frontrunner to open the season as Houston’s starting left guard, Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle notes. A first-round tackle out of Alabama State, Howard would replace 2018 starter Senio Kelemete if this plan ends up coming to fruition. Recent signing Matt Kalil is in place as the team’s left tackle, Wilson adds.

Although Howard was viewed as a bit of a reach as a first-rounder, the Texans — despite firing GM Brian Gaine, who oversaw this year’s draft — clearly believe the former high school quarterback has a chance to play immediately. Gaine said after the draft the college tackle could play both guard positions, and Bill O’Brien‘s staff is testing that stance.

Additionally, the Texans are considering second-round guard Max Scharping as a Week 1 starter on the right side. But Wilson adds 2018 starter Zach Fulton is firmly in the mix to keep his job to start this season. Seantrel Henderson, who re-signed after suffering a season-ending injury in Week 1, is expected to start at right tackle.

Deshaun Watson took the most sacks any NFL passer has since Jon Kitna in 2006. The Texans were quiet in free agency on this front, despite entering the marketplace with more than $80MM in cap space. They added the oft-maligned Kalil and used first- and second-round picks on a Division I-FCS tackle (Howard) and mid-major guard (Scharping, out of Northern Illinois). All three additions could be Week 1 starters, doing so after 2018’s batch of newcomers frequently failed to protect Watson.

Contract Details: Fitzgerald, Cardinals, Jags

Here are the contract details on some of the NFL’s latest deals:

  • Larry Fitzgerald‘s new deal with the Cardinals includes a base salary of $11M plus incentives, a source tells Field Yates of ESPN.com (on Twitter). The pact does not include a signing bonus, but he did manage to match his $11MM salary from 2018. That’s not a bad deal for the veteran wide receiver given his drop in production last season.
  • The Jaguars‘ three-year deal with safety Jarrod Wilson is worth $9MM, a source tells NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport (Twitter link). The contract calls for a $1MM signing bonus, $1.5MM guaranteed, and up to $1.75MM in playtime incentives over the last two years of the deal. Prior to the new deal, he was slated to be a restricted free agent this offseason.
  • Seantrel Henderson‘s new one-year deal with the Texans can be worth up to $4.5MM, but much of that sum is tied to performance incentives, as Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle tweets. He’s set to earn a base salary of $1.5MM with $1MM guaranteed, plus a $500K roster bonus in April and a $500K bonus if he’s on the 46-man roster for at least 12 games. He’ll also see a $2MM roster bonus paid out at a rate of $125K for every game he’s on the 46-man roster.

Texans Re-Sign T Seantrel Henderson

Despite suffering a season-ending injury in his first game as a Texan, Seantrel Henderson said he wanted to stay in Houston. He made good on that promise Saturday.

The Texans announced they re-signed the would-be free agent tackle. Henderson will be tethered to a one-year Texans deal for the second straight season. This contract looks similar to Henderson’s 2018 Houston pact, with Ian Rapoport of NFL.com reporting (on Twitter) it will carry a max value of $4.5MM.

A former seventh-round pick who became a Bills starter during his first two seasons in the league, Henderson signed with the Texans as a free agent last year. He signed for $4MM but went down in Week 1, beginning a season that featured many issues for the Texans’ offensive line.

Following Henderson’s injury, the Texans used a tackle pairing of Julie’n Davenport and Kendall Lamm.

Although they did not get much out of their previous Henderson investment, the Texans are clearly interested in seeing if he can stay healthy and play a role on their 2019 line.
