Scott Daly

Bears Place G Ryan Bates On IR

As the Bears prepare for a Week 2 trip to Houston, they will be doing so without a key depth piece on the offensive line. According to Bears senior writer Larry Mayer, interior offensive lineman Ryan Bates will find his way to injured reserve.

Bates was traded to Chicago early in the offseason this year after five seasons with the Bills. Since entering the league in 2019, Bates has made 19 starts in 73 game appearances, spending only one season as a full-time starter. Upon arriving in Chicago, Bates immediately entered into a position battle at center, losing out to current Bears starter Coleman Shelton.

Even though he lost out on the center job, Bates became an instant competitor for snaps at an uncertain right guard spot. Despite seeing Nate Davis start at right guard, Week 1 saw Bates split time at the position, actually dominating the snaps in the game 38 to 18. With Bates going on IR, Davis will be relied upon more heavily in Week 2.

Taking Bates’ spot on the active roster will be long snapper Scott Daly. This transaction felt inevitable after the Bears placed long-time long snapper Patrick Scales on IR back in August. Daly was elevated off the practice for Week 1, but practice squad players can only be elevated twice off of one contract. With a roster spot opening up, Chicago took advantage and promoted Daly, as Scales will be forced to miss at least three more games.

Joining Daly from the practice squad will be wide receiver Collin Johnson, who will come up as a standard gameday practice squad elevation. Johnson flashed in this year’s Hall of Fame Game, catching two touchdowns from quarterback Brett Rypien but missed the rest of the preseason with an injury. The former fifth-round pick out of Texas will get another regular season opportunity tomorrow before being relegated back to the practice squad after the game.

Bears To Place LS Patrick Scales On IR, Sign LS Scott Daly

11:55am: Daly will indeed be the Bears’ pick. In completing the Scales IR transaction, Chicago will add the former Detroit deep snapper, NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport tweets.

10:17am: Going into his 10th season as the Bears’ long snapper, Patrick Scales will not begin the year on time. The team will soon place its deep snapper on IR, according to the Chicago Tribune’s Brad Biggs.

Scales is set to undergo back surgery, per Biggs, who adds the team is hoping for a recovery timetable of roughly six weeks. Dealing with a disk issue, the 36-year-old specialist has been out since going down in the Hall of Fame Game.

The Bears waived the other long snapper on their roster — Cameron Lyons — on Tuesday, but they will certainly need someone here soon. Scott Daly, the Lions’ snapper for the previous three seasons, is on the team’s radar, Biggs adds. Detroit cut Daly, 30, to go with rookie UDFA Hogan Hatten on Tuesday.

While Chicago could have placed Scales on IR before setting its 53-man roster, the team already allocated those spots. Swing tackle Larry Borom and rotational rusher Jacob Martin received IR-return designations Tuesday; the NFL’s tweak to the IR rule allows for up to two such designations.

Scales’ niche position and the nature of his injury also may have made the Bears hesitant about burning one of their IR-return slots so early. The Bears are down to six IR-return slots already, but the upcoming Scales move will not further subtract from that total just yet. By waiting until today to make the IR transition, the Bears will not lose an activation until they actually move Scales back onto the active roster.

Acquired during the 2015 season, Scales has played 122 Bears games. He also has a notable injury history — for a long snapper, at least. The veteran role player missed the 2017 with a torn ACL. The Bears still have Scales in their plans, having re-signed him on a one-year deal this offseason. But he will need another stint off the roster before attempting to suit up again.

Lions Get Down To 53 Players

The Lions used a couple of different methods to get their active roster to 53 players:

Released:

Waived:

Waived/injured:

Placed on IR (designated for return):

Placed on reserve/PUP list:

The Lions released a lot more vested veterans than we typically see at this time in the year, perhaps a sign of the young talent on the roster. Peko seemed like a sure thing to make the roster after starting 10 games for the Titans in 2023.

Detroit will dismiss a couple of young rushers in Jefferson and Knight after the two failed to develop a significant role on the roster. Fromm was easily outshined in the preseason by an electric Hendon Hooker, who will take the backup job behind Jared Goff. Fromm continues to search for his place in the NFL after nearly winning it all at the collegiate level.

Martin, like Mahogany, will be able to return after four weeks, thanks to a new NFL rule that allows each team to place two players on IR before or at the roster cut deadline and designate them to return. Cornerback Emmanuel Moseley has the other designation.

Mahogany is the only drafted rookie not to make the initial 53, but he’ll stick around in Detroit. On the other side of things, the Lions kept three undrafted rookie signees on their active roster to start the season. Most notably Hogan Hatten will come in and operate as the team’s new long snapper. Safety Loren Strickland from Ball State and wide receiver Isaiah Williams from Illinois are the other two undrafted rookies to make the initial roster.

New York Giants

Irwin gets a crack at a WR3 role in Cincinnati as Tyler Boyd heads to free agency. Irwin also holds experience as the team’s backup return man, filling in last year when Charlie Jones was injured.

Heck rejoins the Texans on a one-year deal worth up to $3.3MM. He’ll add some key depth at an important position.

Rozeboom was a restricted free agent who wasn’t tendered. Regardless, the two sides work out a fully guaranteed deal for 2024.

Feeney joins the Vikings on a one-year deal. Though far removed from a consistent starting role with the Chargers, Feeney has continued to find starts throughout his career as a valuable body off the bench.

The Giants bring in two tight ends without much receiving experience. Manhertz, a veteran whose played for the Panthers from 2016-20, has extensive starting experience as a blocking tight end with 53 starts in his career.

Kareem, who was just activated off of injured reserve, is being waived to make room for defensive end Montez Sweat, acquired by trade this morning. The Bears also announced a practice squad release, indicating a possible return for Kareem on that unit. The Colts are expected to do the same with Boettger.

O’Connor will lose his active roster spot to make room for quarterback John Wolford, whom Tampa Bay officially promoted today in order to ward off interest parties such as the Rams and Vikings, both of whom are experiencing injury issues at quarterback.

Minor NFL Transactions: 3/30/23

Here are Thursday’s minor moves:

Detroit Lions

Pittsburgh Steelers

Daly, 29, has been with the Lions for the past two years after failing to win the snapping job with the Cowboys in 2018. He appeared in every game in each of his seasons in Detroit, and was tendered earlier this month. The Notre Dame alum will now extend his time in the Motor City by at least one campaign.
