Sammy Watkins Likely To Have Second Surgery

Bills wide receiver Sammy Watkins is expected to require a second surgery on his injured foot, and having that operation would end his season, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.com (Twitter link). As Ian Rapoport of NFL.com reported Thursday, Watkins will travel to North Carolina this week and meet with specialist Dr. Robert Anderson before making a final decision.Sammy Watkins (Vertical)

Buffalo officially placed Watkins on injured reserve earlier this week, and although the league’s new IR rules would allow him to return after eight weeks, that avenue is looking increasingly unlikely. If, by chance, Watkins opts against surgery, he’ll need rest and recovery to have any shot to come back later in the season. At that point, the Bills’ record would likely play a large role in deciding whether to activate Watkins.

Watkins, 23, has been dealing with his foot issue since May, when he had a screw inserted following what was termed a “minor” fracture. The ailment has kept him extremely limited this season, and he’s recorded only six catches for 63 yards in two games. To attempt to make up for Watkins’ absence, Buffalo claimed fellow pass-catcher Justin Hunter off waivers from the Dolphins.

Bills Place Sammy Watkins On IR

This has been a rough season for the Bills so far. Today, Buffalo announced that star wide receiver Sammy Watkins has been placed on IR. Sammy Watkins (vertical)

There is no surgery scheduled for Watkins, though he will visit Dr. Robert Anderson to be sure, Ian Rapoport of NFL.com tweets. The plan for Watkins will consist of rest and rehab.

Watkins could potentially return after two months thanks to the league’s new IR rules, but it’s not immediately clear if that’s a possibility for the wide receiver. Of course, if the Bills’ season keeps going in the same direction, it’s unlikely that Watkins would be activated even if he’s healthy later on in the season. Buffalo is currently 1-2 heading into a tough matchup against the Patriots on Sunday. Meanwhile, they’re missing several starters on the other side of the ball.

The Bills went all-in on Watkins in the 2014 draft, trading the No. 9 overall pick, their first-round choice in 2015, and a 2015 fourth-rounder to acquire him. From a talent perspective, Watkins proved to be as good as the hype. Unfortunately, he hasn’t been able to stay healthy. Watkins bravely played through the pain in 2015 but his foot only got worse with time.

With Watkins sidelined for at least eight weeks (and possibly the full season), one has to wonder if coach Rex Ryan will be able to keep his job for 2017. It’s only Year 2 for Rex in Buffalo, but there have been rumblings about his job security for months. Ryan will have to get some Ws out of his team without some of their most important players this year, including the dynamic Watkins.

In two games this year, Watkins recorded six catches for 63 yards.

Latest On Sammy Watkins

The Bills have ruled Sammy Watkins out for Sunday’s game, as Ian Rapoport of NFL.com tweets. Structurally his foot is fine, but it comes down to a pain management issue and doctors believe that rest should help. Meanwhile, it’s not exactly clear when Watkins will take the field again. coach Rex Ryan says there is “major concern” over Watkins’ availability moving forward this season (Twitter link via Mike Rodak of ESPN.com). Watkins is no stranger to injuries, but he has toughed it out for the most part. Last year, Watkins missed only three games due to injury despite being banged up for the entire year. In 2014, Watkins was on the field for every regular season game. Now, the pain is too much to play through and the Bills aren’t quite sure when their best offensive weapon will be able to suit up. What the Bills do know is that Watkins won’t be on the field Sunday afternoon against the rival Patriots.

This year, Watkins has six receptions for 63 yards in two games played. In his 13-game season, Watkins hauled in 60 passes for 1,047 yards and nine touchdowns in his shortened season.

East Notes: Bush, Watkins, Jets, Dez

Upcoming roster decisions involving Marcell Dareus and Seantrel Henderson could put Reggie Bush‘s status with the Bills in jeopardy, Mike Rodak of ESPN.com writes. Bush has three carries for minus-4 yards and did not play in the Bills’ 33-18 win over the Cardinals.

Buffalo handed the former No. 2 overall pick and Heisman Trophy winner a $375K signing bonus despite signing him late in the offseason but has given Mike Gillislee the backup job behind LeSean McCoy. Last week, fifth-round rookie Jonathan Williams saw action ahead of Bush as well.

Rex Ryan hinted that Bush had a role as a slot receiver set for last week but the team never got to it. The 31-year-old Bush also has not seen action on special teams to this point despite an extensive history as a punt returner.

Here’s more from the Eastern divisions.

  • Sammy Watkins has not sustained any further damage to his foot, structurally speaking, Mike Garafolo of NFL.com reports (video link). It will continue to be about pain tolerance for the Bills’ talented wide receiver, per Garafolo. Watkins suffered the foot fracture in May and hasn’t been effective this season, by his standards. The former top-five pick has six receptions for 63 yards through two games.
  • Jets No. 4 wide receiver Jalin Marshall suffered a torn labrum in his shoulder during Sunday’s loss to the Chiefs, Todd Bowles said (via Connor Hughes of NJ.com). The 21-year-old made the Jets as a UDFA out of Ohio State. Hughes notes the team is not ready to put Marshall on IR yet but adds the Jets could be looking to add a wide receiver soon since Eric Decker is also battling an injured shoulder. Brandon Marshall practiced fully today but was questionable for Week 3 after suffering a knee injury against the Bills.
  • Rich Cimini of ESPN.com was surprised that the Jets claimed Austin Seferian-Jenkins off waivers. Late last week, the tight end was arrested and charged with DUI, leading to being waived by Tampa Bay. The Jets have been taking a conservative approach toward players with character issues under the new regime, but the ASJ acquisition is a clear departure from that mindset. On the other hand, none of his $677K salary is guaranteed for this season, making this a low-risk move from a fiscal standpoint.
  • While Watkins’ issues may well stem from pain management, Dez Bryant isn’t as fortunate at this juncture. The Cowboys‘ top wideout has a hairline fracture in his knee, but instead of a two-to-three-week timetable previously reported, Bryant’s injury could keep him out more than a month, per Dr. David Chao (via Sirius XM Radio, on Twitter). Bryant missed seven games last season due to a broken foot.

Bills “Holding Out Hope” On Sammy Watkins

7:59pm: Watkins himself has weighed in (via Twitter ), claiming that he’s planning on playing tomorrow: “Ready to go out there and compete at the highest level!”

7:42pm: The Bills are hoping that wide receiver Sammy Watkins is able to play against the Cardinals on Sunday, but head coach Rex Ryan admitted that the chances of Watkins suiting up are “probably not real good,” according to Mike Rodak of ESPN.com. The likelihood of Watkins being ready to go is “50/50 at best,” tweets Jason La Canfora of CBSSports.com.Sammy Watkins (Vertical)

Watkins’ health has been an issue dating back to May, when the third-year wideout suffered a reportedly “minor” foot fracture. Subsequent reports suggested that Watkins could miss games at the start of the season, but he’s so far been able to plug along, though his results have been less than stellar. Through two contests, Watkins has managed only six receptions for 63 yards, though he has stayed on the field, playing in 80.4% of the Bills’ offensive snaps.

Earlier this month, Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News reported that Watkins was likely to miss regular season action at some point, noting that while an MRI didn’t reveal any new fractures, Watkins has been playing through immense pain. It seems as though Watkins isn’t going to come close to recovering without rest, but given that Buffalo has just fired its offensive coordinator at sits at 0-2, the club needs all the firepower it can get.

Per Rodak, Ryan wouldn’t show reluctance to play Watkins on Sunday even though the pass-catcher hasn’t practiced at all during the week. “If he feels good and he’s up to it, then we’ll put him in there,” Ryan said. “If a guy’s that good, we’ll play him.”

Latest On Bills’ Offense

After the Bills fired offensive coordinator Greg Roman on Friday, head coach Rex Ryan insisted that it was his decision. However, there were reports that team ownership actually spurred the move. Bills owner Terry Pegula dismissed that notion in a text message to the Associated Press on Monday, writing, “We do things together like any well run org would. Head coach runs the team and staff.”

Pegula and his wife, Kim, did hold a meeting with members of the Bills’ offense Friday. That meeting did not include Ryan, who reportedly wasn’t pleased with his absence. He downplayed that Monday, though.

“That happens all the time,” Ryan said of meeting between owners and players (via Mike Rodak of ESPN.com). “I feel fortunate that our owners — I mean, they talk to our players, they talk to everybody. I can tell you this: I’m in full support of our owners. At the end of the day, it really doesn’t matter, does it? They own the football team. They don’t have to get permission to talk to anybody, myself included. I have no problem with it whatsoever. In fact, I think it’s a real positive thing for us.”

Among the players at the meeting with the Pegulas was the Bills’ top receiver, Sammy Watkins, who hasn’t been much of a factor during the club’s 0-2 start. While battling a foot injury, Watkins has amassed just six catches for 63 yards on 11 targets. The third-year man didn’t reveal much about the meeting to the AP, only saying that it centered on ways for the entire team to improve.

A report Saturday indicated that Bills players are pleased with the dismissal of Roman, whom the team replaced with assistant head coach/running backs coach Anthony Lynn. One thing that won’t change with Lynn is the language of the offense, according to Ryan.

“I think the spin on the offense is going to be immediate,” he stated. “Some things that we’ll do from a tactical standpoint, I think we’ll see immediately. Change in the verbiage and playbook and all that stuff, we’ll pull from the same playbook. There may be an occasional play here and there, but it’s still gonna be — we’re definitely keeping the verbiage and everything else that’s already in place.”

Under Lynn, the Bills hope to “showcase” quarterback Tyrod Taylor, Ryan said Friday. He also called Taylor a “rare talent.” The Bills signed Taylor to a six-year, $92MM contract extension in August, but they’ll be able to escape it relatively unscathed during the winter if they’re unhappy with his performance.

Sammy Watkins To Miss Multiple Games?

In the past, Sammy Watkins has managed to play through some serious pain. However, the pain he is now experiencing in his surgically repaired foot could cause him to miss several weeks of action, sources tell Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News. The good news here, however, is that x-rays did not reveal any new fractures."<strong

[RELATED: Bills, C Patrick Lewis Agree To Extension]

After having a perfect attendance record in his rookie season, Watkins was forced to miss three games in 2016. In the spring, Watkins suffered what was termed as a minor foot fracture and had to have a screw inserted. In his 13-game season, Watkins hauled in 60 passes for 1,047 yards and nine touchdowns in his shortened season.

On Sunday, Watkins had four catches for 43 yards in Buffalo’s loss to the Ravens. Losing Watkins for any length of time would be devastating for Buffalo, particularly given the holes they have on the other side of the ball already. It doesn’t help that this is a short week for the Bills as they face off against the rival Jets on Thursday night.

Beyond Watkins, the Bills have Robert Woods, Marquise Goodwin, Greg Salas, Brandon Tate, and Walt Powell at wide receiver. Buffalo also has a pair of receivers on the practice squad in Matt Hazel and Dez Lewis.

Sammy Watkins Expected To Return By Camp?

JULY 7: It now appears that Watkins is on track for training camp, as Tyler Dunne of the Buffalo News tweets.

JUNE 26: Watkins has backed off his recent prediction that he will miss a maximum of two or three days of training camp, as Mike Rodak of ESPN.com reports (citing a conversation that Watkins had with ESPN’s Vaughn McClure during a charity bowling event yesterday). Watkins told McClure, “Hopefully I’ll be back [for training camp]. If not, then cool. Get ready for the first [regular season] game.” It sounds as if Watkins’ earlier prediction was perhaps more optimistic than realistic.

JUNE 20: After Bills wideout Sammy Watkins suffered a minor foot fracture last month, there were conflicting reports as to exactly how long the third-year pass-catcher would be sidelined. While initial reports suggested that Watkins would be able to return to practice later this summer, head coach Rex Ryan didn’t sound as sure, stating that “the goal” was for Watkins to be available for the regular season. But speaking with Mike Hetherington of TSN.ca, Watkins was clear that he expects to be back in action by the time training camp rolls around.Sammy Watkins (vertical)

“For training camp, I think I’ll definitely be available,” said Watkins. “I might sit out two or three days. It’s all about how I feel within those days. The goal is to come back and be prepared for training camp. Basically we are just taking it slow. Doing the little things now as far as cutting and moving around; the basics. There’s really no timetable. It’s really when I feel healthy, when I am healthy.”

As he continues to recover, Watkins plans to remain in the Buffalo area, maintaining contact with club officials and medial staff for the duration of the summer, according to Chris Brown of the team’s website. Watkins, 23, missed three games with injury in 2015, but still posted an excellent season, hauling in 60 passes for more than 1,000 yards and nine touchdowns.

Despite the injury to Watkins, and the relative lack of receiver depth behind him, Bills general manager Doug Whaley said last month that he doesn’t anticipate signing any free agent pass-catchers for the time being. However, Whaley didn’t rule out inking a veteran such as Anquan Boldin down the road, presumably if the club’s young receivers don’t blossom, or Watkins doesn’t heal as hoped.

AFC East Notes: Brady, Jets, Watkins, Jordan

Patriots quarterback Tom Brady has added a couple of powerful allies – the AFL-CIO and high-profile attorney Kenneth Feinberg – as he seeks to overturn his four-game suspension for his role in the Deflategate scandal, details The Associated Press. In a friend of the court brief filed Monday, the AFL-CIO asked the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals to reconsider a three-judge panel’s April decision to reinstate Brady’s suspension. According to the labor federation, the panel made a mistake in regarding NFL commissioner Roger Goodell as a neutral arbitrator. Meanwhile, Feinberg claims that Goodell “impermissibly exceeded the scope of his authority” and “used the vehicle of arbitration as a mechanism to rewrite the underlying bargain between the parties, to the sole advantage of his organization.”

As for the rest of the AFC East…

  • There was a report last week that the Jets’ Eric Decker was skipping OTAs because of the team’s lack of progress in re-signing quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick, but the receiver issued a denial Wednesday. “That’s not the reason I wasn’t there,” he said (Twitter link via Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News). Decker also expressed confidence that Fitzpatrick will eventually re-up with Gang Green, according to Brian Costello of the New York Post. On the other hand, fellow wideout Brandon Marshall wouldn’t say whether his absence was on account of the Fitzpatrick situation (Twitter link via Costello). However, Marshall did acknowledge Wednesday that the Fitzpatrick-less Jets must “move forward and try to figure out how we can win some games.”
  • When news of a minor foot fracture surfaced earlier this month, the expectation was that Bills receiver Sammy Watkins would be ready for training camp. Based on the words of Watkins and head coach Rex Ryan, that’s now up in the air, as Kevin Patra of NFL.com writes. “The goal is the regular season,” said Watkins, whose walking boot will come off Thursday. “All I know is that Sammy won’t miss time in the regular season,” Ryan commented.
  • When asked about defensive end Dion Jordan applying for reinstatement, Dolphins coach Adam Gase said, “I’ll worry about that when it comes around” (Twitter link via Tom Pelissero of USA Today Sports). Jordan, the third pick in the 2013 draft, had to sit out last season after the league suspended him for violating its substance abuse policy. Jordan has missed 22 games because of suspensions during his short career and has totaled just three sacks in 26 contests.

Bills Notes: Watkins, Barnes, Free Agents

News hasn’t been very positive in Buffalo this offseason, as the injury bug has hit hard. Bills first-round pick Shaq Lawson could miss a third of the regular season after undergoing shoulder surgery, while receiver Sammy Watkins will be out until training camp with a foot fracture. The Bills had been counting on both players for contributions, so the club will need both to approach full health at some point during the season if they have any hope of toppling the Patriots in the AFC East.

Here’s the latest out of Buffalo…

  • Bills general manager Doug Whaley doesn’t anticipate Watkins missing any time in the regular season, Tyler Dunne of The Buffalo News tweets. Earlier this month, Watkins suffered a broken small bone in his foot and had a screw inserted to hold things in place. Last season, Watkins was sidelined for three games but hauled in 60 passes for 1,047 yards and nine touchdowns. Of course, Whaley also insisted that first round Lawson would not have to undergo shoulder surgery, and the Clemson product went under the knife soon after the draft.
  • Buffalo could conceivably target any number of veteran free agents to replace the production that might be lost due to Lawson and Watkins’ absences, but Whaley said the club hasn’t yet made contact with any street free agents left on the board. “We want to see what we have and the development of the guys on the roster in the OTAs,” said Whaley, according to Chris Brown of BuffaloBills.com. “[Veterans] we look at as consummate professionals. They’re always going to be in shape and if the time comes where we think the guys aren’t progressing like we need them to that’s when you look at a guy like Anquan Boldin or a Dwight Freeney, but right now we want to develop some young guys with an eye on the future saying those guys are out there if for needs sake we need to pick them up.” Whaley added that the Bills would “keep [their] options open” and would “never say never.”
  • Nose tackle T.J. Barnes is worked at left tackle today for the Bills, according to Joe Buscaglia of WKBW (Twitter link). Buffalo plucked Barnes — who has no offensive line experience either in the NFL or at Georgia Tech — off of the Jets’ taxi squad in December of 2015.
