Packers Promote DT Brian Price

Price, a product of University of Texas-San Antonio, made headlines for the wrong reasons in college. In the second-to-last game of the 2014 season, Price shoved an official to the ground in a fit of rage. In May, Price admitted to Tom Silverstein of the Journal Sentinel that the incident probably cost him an opportunity to hear his name called in this year’s draft.

“I think it was definitely a red flag,” Price said. “You know, in football, tempers flare, emotions run high. It was the heat of the moment. I didn’t know it was a ref beside me, I kind of side-swiped him and it happened to be a ref and I was like, oh, I knew I messed up. I definitely feel NFL teams took note of that.”

Still, despite the incident, roughly two-thirds of the league reached out to Price’s reps after the draft to express interest. The defensive tackle ultimately chose Green Bay and it appears that he chose wisely as he has found his way to the varsity roster.

  • The Patriots tried out eight free agents today, Doug Kyed of NESN.com reports. Quarterback Sean Renfree joined wide receivers Da’Ron Brown, Jordan Leslie, Max McCaffrey, Mekale McKay and DeAndrew White, along with linebacker Deon King and defensive lineman B.J. McBryde. Renfree may be the highest-profile player in this bunch to have auditioned. A former Falcons seventh-round pick in 2013, Renfree saw brief action last season but couldn’t make it out of training camp with Atlanta this season.
  • The Bengals worked out linebacker/defensive end Sadat Sulleyman today, as Aaron Wilson of The Houston Chronicle tweets. The team also worked out cornerback Robertson Daniel, as Wilson tweets.
  • Former Texans running back Kenny Hilliard is drawing interest from multiple NFL teams, per Wilson (on Twitter) but is still weighing his options.
  • The Seahawks auditioned defensive end Dominique Davis, edge defender Jason Fanaika, defensive end Shelby Harris and offensive lineman Ian Silberman, Wilson tweets. The Raiders cut Harris this offseason after the former seventh-round pick played in eight games with the team in 2014-15.

Workout Notes: Ravens, Lions, Chiefs, Bills

The latest workouts from around the NFL:

  • Quarterback David Fales visited the Ravens on Monday, reports Field Yates of ESPN.com (Twitter link via Jamison Hensley). Fales spent the first two years of his career in Chicago after it selected him in the sixth round of the 2014 draft. The former San Jose State signal-caller worked under then-head coach Marc Trestman as a rookie. Trestman is now the Ravens’ offensive coordinator.
  • The Lions tried out tight ends Nic Jacobs and Marcel Johnson on Monday, per Yates. Both Jacobs and Jensen were previously with Jacksonville. They have four career catches between them.
  • The Chiefs auditioned cornerback Robertson Daniel on Monday, tweets Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle. Daniel, a former BYU Cougar, has spent time with Oakland and Green Bay since going undrafted last year.
  • The Bills tried out tight end Rory “Busta” Anderson, a source told Yates. Anderson was a seventh-round pick of the 49ers last year. He didn’t see any game action as a rookie.
  • Linebacker Luke Rhodes has a Tuesday workout with the Jaguars, according to Draft Diamonds (Twitter link via Greg Auman of the Tampa Bay Times). Rhodes went undrafted out of William & Mary before hooking on with the Buccaneers, who waived him Friday.
  • The Packers took a look at tight end Steven Scheu, relays Rob Demovsky of ESPN.com (Twitter link). The Patriots cut Scheu, undrafted from Vanderbilt, in camp.

Packers Place Andrew Quarless On IR

FRIDAY, 9:45pm: To fill Quarless’ roster spot, the Packers promoted cornerback Robertson Daniel from their practice squad, Rob Demovsky of ESPN.com reports (on Twitter). Even after the team ruled out Davante Adams for Saturday’s divisional-round game against the Cardinals, the Packers opted not to bring up one of the two receivers on their practice squad. They’ll go with just four vs. Arizona.

THURSDAY, 11:08pm: In advance of their divisional playoff game against the Cardinals, the Packers will be placing tight end Andrew Quarless on the injured reserve list, according to Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Quarless himself alluded to the move on his Instagram account earlier today."<strong

“Wanted to be the first to thank all my loyal fans who have supported me this past year,” Quarless wrote. “You all have been a blessings to my life. My season has come to an end not by choice but I will continue to trust God’s plan for my life.”

Quarless, 27, has already spent most of the season on injured reserve, though he was originally placed on IR with the designation to return. An MCL injury sidelined Quarless for about two and a half months, beginning in late September, limiting him to five games and just four receptions for 31 yards for the season.

A source tells Rob Demovsky of ESPN.com that the tight end recently underwent a procedure to drain fluid from his knee, and it seems the Packers had concerns about his health going forward. Once the team makes the move official, there will be an open spot for Green Bay to add a player to the 53-man roster — likely someone from the practice squad.

It’s been a rough year for Quarless, whose July arrest raised doubts about whether he’d even remain with the Packers. While Green Bay did keep him around, Quarless was on the shelf for most of the season as second-year tight end Richard Rodgers enjoyed a breakout campaign, hauling in 58 balls and racking up eight touchdowns.
