Reshard Cliett

NFL Workout Updates: 11/15/16

The Colts worked out a cadre of players today, including veteran offensive lineman Dallas Thomas, according to Adam Caplan of ESPN.com (Twitter link). Thomas, 27, started 26 games during his four-year career with Miami, but was cut earlier this year. Indianapolis also auditioned cornerback Will Davis, wide receivers Antwan Goodley and Dres Anderson, and linebacker Davis Tull.

Here’s more from the workout circuit:

  • With Cameron Heyward out for the year, the Steelers tried out defensive end Bobby Richardson today, tweets Nick Underhill of the Advocate. Richardson was a 11-game starter during his rookie season in 2015, but has bounced around the league during his sophomore campaign.
  • Former Colts defensive back D’Joun Smith worked out for the Packers today, reports Caplan (Twitter link). Smith was a third-round pick in 2015.
  • The Seahawks worked out defensive lineman Shaneil Jenkins, per Caplan (Twitter link).
  • The Eagles took a look at wide receiver Kenny Lawler and fullback Chris Swain, tweets Caplan.
  • Lawler has been busy this week, as Caplan reports (Twitter link) that he also worked out for the Chiefs.
  • The Jaguars auditioned offensive tackle Rob Crisp, according to Howard Balzer (Twitter link).
  • The Buccaneers worked out offensive lineman Mike Liedtke, tweets Balzer.
  • In search of linebacker depth, the Titans tried out free agent Reshard Cliett today, per Balzer (Twitter link).

In his latest Agent’s Take column for CBSSports.com, Joel Corry examines a list of eleven quarterbacks who could be playing for new teams in 2017, with names like Tony Romo, Colin Kaepernick, and Jay Cutler topping the list. Kirk Cousins, currently playing under the franchise tag, could also be suiting up for a different club next season, especially if Falcons offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan — who once called plays in Washington — becomes a head coach this offseason.

Here’s more from around the NFL:

  • The Patriots worked out linebacker Reshard Cliett today, according to Doug Kyed of NESN (Twitter link). As Mike Reiss of ESPN.com writes, New England’s recent run of auditioning linebackers is due to the club’s injury situation. Jamie Collins missed Sunday’s game against the Bengals, his backup Elandon Roberts is dealing with an injury of his own, and Jonathan Freeny is already on injured reserve. Shea McClellin and Rob Ninkovich, each of whom has been playing on the line, could be options at linebacker, as could recent trade acquisition Barkevious Mingo.
  • The Falcons tried out defensive tackle Jordan Hill, Bob Condotta of the Seattle Times tweets. The Seahawks cut Hill, 25, from injured reserve last week. Hill was a key reserve during the 2014 campaign, posting 5.5 sacks, and was a part-time player (10 appearances) last season as well.
  • The Jets worked out wide receiver Dres Anderson today, reports Brian Costello of the New York Post (Twitter link). Anderson, who was recently cut from the 49ers’ practice squad, tried out for the Patriots yesterdayy.
  • Defensive end Sterling Bailey, defensive back Daniel Davie, and defensive back Brandon McGee worked out for the Chiefs, Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch tweets.

NFL Workout Updates: 9/6/16

A couple NFC South teams held large tryout sessions today, and the Saints ended up signing a player — veteran corner Sterling Moore — after he auditioned for them earlier today. Let’s take a look at some more news from the workout front:

  • Facing a kicker crisis, the Giants worked out placekickers Cody Parkey, Shayne Graham, and Aldrick Rosas today, reports Jordan Raanan of ESPN.com, though New York is unlikely to sign anyone from the group, according to Ralph Vacchiano of SNY (Twitter link). Per Raanan, the Giants also worked out a large group of offensive lineman that included Vlad Ducasse, Mackenzy Bernadeau.
  • The Patriots worked out the following defensive backs today (via Doug Kyed of NESN on Twitter): Mike Hilton, Trae Elston, Stefan McClure, JaCorey Shepherd, Kevin Short. New England was trying out players for the final spot on its practice squad, and Hilton ultimately earned the job.
  • The Jaguars worked out former Houston inside linebacker Reshard Cliett today, according to a source who spoke with Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle (on Twitter). The fast former South Florida standout was let go by Houston prior to the 53-man cut. Jacksonville also worked out linebacker Luke Rhodes today, but they didn’t offer him a deal right away, Greg Auman of the Tampa Bay Times tweets.
  • Former Cincinnati receiver Mekale McKay was part of a Buccaneers’ workout earlier today, and he’ll next try out for the Patriots on Wednesday, according to Auman (Twitter link).
  • The Packers auditioned defensive tackle Rodney Coe today, per Rob Demovsky of ESPN.com. Coe participated in training camp with the Cowboys.

Texans Make Cuts, Close To 53

No one can accuse the Texans of procrastinating. Today, Houston dropped a number of players from the roster in advance of Saturday’s 53-man deadline. Here’s the full list of reported moves thus far: Texans Helmet (Featured)

Mitchell, a former member of the Cowboys, hooked on with the Texans after he was waived in June. Jason Garrett spoke highly of Mitchell in the spring, but Dallas bounced him in the summer.

Allen, 27, is a former Jet, having spent the past three seasons in New York, where he appeared in 38 games and started 18. He signed a one-year deal that included $80K guaranteed this spring.

Texans Cut 10 Players, Move Cliett To IR

3:50pm: The Texans have made another cut, waiving punter Will Johnson, according to Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle (via Twitter).

1:34pm: The Texans’ cutdown to 75 players is underway, with Mark Berman of FOX 26 Houston reporting, in a series of Twitter links, that the team has removed 10 players from its roster, cutting nine and moving linebacker Reshard Cliett to the injured reserve list. Cliett, a sixth-round pick, went down several weeks ago with a knee injury, and will be sidelined for his rookie season.

Per Berman, here are the nine players cut by the Texans today:

  • Aaron Adams, T
  • Jason Ankrah, OLB
  • Alan Bonner, WR
  • Jace Davis, WR
  • Chris Neild, NT
  • Cam McLeod, DE
  • Travis Labhart, WR
  • Bryan Witzmann, T
  • Cody White, NT

By my count, the Texans are now carrying 80 active players, following their acquisition of tackle Chris Clark, so they’ll have to make a few more moves by Tuesday afternoon’s 75-man deadline.
