Chargers Claim Rasheed Bailey From Jags

The Chargers have claimed wide receiver Rasheed Bailey off waivers from the Jaguars, according to Adam Caplan of ESPN.com. To make room for Bailey, San Diego has waived/injured fellow wideout Rico Richardson (Twitter links). Rasheed Bailey (vertical)

Jacksonville waived the 23-year-old Bailey on Tuesday after he originally hooked on with the organization last October. The 6-foot-1, 209-pounder went undrafted out of Delaware Valley a year ago and also spent time with the Eagles, though he didn’t garner any regular-season experience with either them or the Jaguars. Previously, Bailey racked up 10 receptions for 100 yards and a touchdown with the Eagles last preseason.

Between his stints in Philadelphia and Jacksonville, Bailey was a member of the BC Lions of the Canadian Football League for two weeks in October. That ended when the Jags signed him to their practice squad. He’ll now try to earn a spot with the Chargers, whose depth chart at wideout features Keenan Allen, Travis Benjamin, James Jones and Dontrelle Inman, among others.

Richardson, meanwhile, is primed to look for work yet again, having already been a member of five organizations since going undrafted from Jackson State in 2013. The 25-year-old signed with the Chargers on Aug. 8, but an injury in practice kept him from attempting to make a mark with the club. Richardson has appeared in six games, all with the Titans from 2014-15, but he hasn’t recorded any stats.

Today’s minor moves:

  • To make room for the newest member of their roster, Brock Vereen, the Chiefs released safety Akeem Davis (Twitter link via Terez A. Paylor of the Kansas City Star).
  • The Ravens signed cornerback Carrington Byndom and waived fellow corner Sam Brown, per Jamison Hensley of ESPN.com.
  • The Browns waived offensive lineman Erle Ladson, tweets Nate Ulrich of the Akron Beacon Journal.
  • The Jaguars signed guard/center Jacques McClendon and waived wide receiver Rasheed Bailey, as Michael DiRocco of ESPN.com tweets. McClendon was with the Jaguars in 2013-14.
  • The Colts signed free agent safety Alden Darby, as Colts PR man Christian Edwards tweets. They also removed running back Abou Toure from IR with an injury settlement, according to Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle (Twitter link).
  • The Giants signed defensive back Joe Powell, who attended Globe Institute of Technology in Manhattan, according to Jordan Raanan of ESPN (Twitter link). Powell will take the place of fellow DB Matt Smalley, who suffered a dislocated shoulder Monday.
  • The Titans announced that they have signed wide receivers Jarrod West and Donte Foster. The team also waived/injured offensive lineman Josue Matias. Matias, a 2015 UDFA addition, spent last year on Tennessee’s practice squad and is facing a six-month recovery.
  • The Lions waived wide receiver Alex Chisum and signed free agent offensive lineman Lemuel Jeanpierre, according to a team announcement.
  • The NFL announced that Chiefs offensive tackle Zach Sterup has been suspended four games for violating the policy on performance-enhancing substances, as Terez A. Paylor of the Kansas City Star tweets.

NFL Reserve/Futures Contracts: 1/4/16

Now that the 2015 regular season is in the books, teams can begin signing players to reserve/futures contracts, adding those players to their 90-man offseason rosters. Generally, these players finished the season on a team’s practice squad, though some were free agents at season’s end.

Tryout Notes: Chiefs, Browns, Patriots

Let’s take a look at some assorted tryout notes from around the NFL…

  • The Chiefs worked out a trio of players this week, according to Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle (via Twitter): defensive tackle Jimmy Staten, quarterback Cole Stoudt and wideout Rasheed Bailey (as had been previously reported). Staten, a fifth-round pick of the Seahawks in 2014, has already spent time with the Giants and Patriots this season. Stoudt, a former standout at Clemson, had previously spent time on the Chargers practice squad.
  • In addition to working out Jerry Rice Jr., Wilson reports (via Twitter) that the Browns also auditioned receivers Rannell Hall and Uzoma Nwachukwu and safeties Robert Lester, Phillip Thomas and Tyrequek Zimmerman.
  • Tight end Brian Leonhardt worked out for the Patriots earlier this week, reports Darren Wolfson of 1500ESPN (via Twitter). An undrafted free agent in 2013, Leonhardt compiled six catches for 35 yards and a touchdown with the Raiders in 2014. The 25-year-old has previously auditioned with the Vikings, Jets and Eagles.

West Notes: Chancellor, Osweiler, Bailey

As someone who has plenty of experience with NFL contract negotiations and standoffs, former Packers executive Andrew Brandt has an interesting summary of the Kam Chancellor situation over at TheMMQB.com. According to Brandt, the Seahawks were willing to shift about $3MM from 2017 to 2016 for their star safety, but were unwilling to add any new money to his contract.

Meanwhile, although Brandt isn’t sure how much – if any – of Chancellor’s fines and prorated bonus money the Seahawks will actually attempt to collect, he notes that many team executives around the NFL would prefer for those fines to be less optional. The thinking there is that if players faced mandatory fines for holdouts, they’d be less likely to sit out — knowing that the team may forgive those fines, a player is a little more likely to roll the dice on a holdout.

Here’s more on Chancellor, along with a couple other notes from out of the NFL’s West divisions:

  • Jason Cole of Bleacher Report (Twitter link) believes that Chancellor doomed his leverage in future negotiations by eventually reporting to the Seahawks, since the team will now have little reason to fear a holdout in the future. I’m not sure I buy that — the club lost two games without Chancellor, and will certainly want to avoid a similar scenario in the future. Once the safety has just two years left on his deal, I could see the Seahawks becoming a little more willing to compromise.
  • While there’s “no denying” how highly the Broncos coaching staff thinks of quarterback Trevor Siemian, Troy Renck of the Denver Post expects the club to make a strong effort to retain QB Brock Osweiler beyond the 2015 season. With no guarantee how much longer Peyton Manning will play, Osweiler may still eventually take on a larger role in Denver.
  • Former Eagles wide receiver Rasheed Bailey, who signed with the team as an undrafted free agent in the spring but was waived during the cutdown to 53 players, is working out for the Chiefs today, according to Adam Caplan of ESPN.com (Twitter link). Caplan adds that Bailey will likely audition for the Browns next.

Workout Notes: 9/9/15

Former Falcons center Joe Hawley is visiting the Buccaneers today, according to Adam Caplan of ESPN.com (on Twitter). Hawley could be a fit with Tampa Bay as he has a history with offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter from their time together in Atlanta. Hawley, 27 in October, was on his way to returning from the ACL surgery that ended his 2014 season prematurely when he was cut loose by the Falcons earlier this week.

  • Keavon Milton visited the Panthers (link). The offensive lineman spent time on the Seahawks’ taxi squad in 2014 before being promoted to the 53-man roster in December.

AFC Notes: Bills, Henery, Geno Smith

Here’s a quick look at the AFC..

  • Bills coach Rex Ryan has expressed frustration about kicker Dan Carpenter and it sounds like Buffalo is going to look into replacing him. The Bills auditioned both Billy Cundiff and Alex Henery on Monday, as Mike Rodak of ESPN.com writes. Carpenter missed three field goals and one extra point in three preseason games.
  • Jets quarterback Geno Smith said that he will not press charges against IK Enemkpali, as Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News tweets. Smith also mentioned that the league is still looking into the incident and inferred that more details on the altercation will emerge, Rich Cimini of ESPN.com tweets. Meanwhile, coach Todd Bowles says it still looks like Smith will miss about four games, Mehta tweets.
  • Former Eagles wide receiver Rasheed Bailey is scheduled to work out for the Jaguars this week, Adam Caplan of ESPN.com tweets.

Eagles Reduce Roster To 52 Players

Their decision to cut Tim Tebow will make the biggest headlines today, but the Eagles have made many more roster moves, and have not only reduced their roster to the maximum 53 — they’ve gone one further, getting down to 52 players.

As Les Bowen of the Philadelphia Inquirer tweets, there’s a good chance that 53rd spot will be filled in the coming days with a quarterback. After having cut Tebow and traded Matt Barkley, the club is carrying just two signal-callers, and wouldn’t mind adding some insurance for the oft-injured Sam Bradford.
