Ramiz Ahmed

Commanders Sign WR Martavis Bryant, Waive K Ramiz Ahmed

Add Martavis Bryant to the list of recent Cowboys following Dan Quinn to Washington. After a second meeting with the Commanders, the veteran wide receiver secured another comeback opportunity.

Bryant, who has not played a regular-season game since 2018, spent much of last season on the Cowboys’ practice squad. He joins Tyler Biadasz, Dorance Armstrong and Dante Fowler as players on the 2023 Cowboys who are now part of the Commanders’ 2024 roster. Of course, the March signees have locked-in paths to playing time. Bryant has merely scored another chance to compete.

To make room on their 90-man roster, the Commanders cut kicker Ramiz Ahmed. Entering camp as the team’s only kicker, Ahmed saw his status change when the team claimed Riley Patterson. Ahmed has kicked in one career game. He will lose a kicking competition to a much more experienced player.

Although Bryant caught on with the Cowboys during Quinn’s Dallas finale, the team never elevated him onto its active roster. This sent the former Steelers and Raiders pass catcher to another crossroads, as he is now 32. The NFL reinstated Bryant last year, after he had been suspended for substance abuse — during a 2011 CBA that brought stricter penalties on this front — back in 2018.

The Cowboys also cut Bryant in May, after having given him a reserve/futures contract to extend his redevelopment. But the 6-foot-4 weapon has continued to generate interest. As could be expected, Quinn said (via NBC Sports Washington’s JP Finlay) he was impressed with Bryant on Dallas’ P-squad last year.

Bryant’s initial NFL run included extended flashes, mostly in Pittsburgh, that still have league personnel intrigued. Suspended in 2015, 2016 and 2018, Bryant still totaled 17 touchdowns (all with the Steelers) during his interrupted early years. He produced two 600-plus-yard seasons, including a 765-yard 2015 showing opposite Antonio Brown that came in just 11 games. Bryant followed that up with an acrobatic TD in a Steelers wild-card win over the Bengals. Being unable to follow that up — thanks to a full-season ban in 2016 — came to define the Clemson alum’s career.

Bryant resurfaced in the XFL’s third effort in 2023. The Cowboys enjoyed good luck from spring-league imports recently, adding All-Pro kicker Brandon Aubrey and Pro Bowl return man KaVontae Turpin from the USFL. Quinn’s new team will try its luck with Bryant, who is certainly running short on time to make an NFL return. Beyond their Terry McLaurinJahan DotsonLuke McCaffrey trio, the Commanders carry Jamison Crowder, fourth-year player Dyami Brown and the recently re-signed Byron Pringle.

The Commanders added Ahmed shortly after releasing Brandon McManus in June. The Jaguars’ decision to waive Patterson early in training camp led to him being claimed once again. Kicking in 39 games since 2021, the well-traveled specialist is now the only kicker on Washington’s 90-man roster.

After missing most of the past two seasons due to a knee injury, Ryan Jensen announced back in February that he was going to retire. The Buccaneers made the move official today, although that won’t be the end of their cap commitment to the offensive lineman. As Greg Auman of FOX Sports notes, since Jensen’s contract was pro-rated, the Buccaneers will be hit with a combined $16.6MM in dead cap over the next two seasons.

The Browns cleared up their depth chart a bit by cutting kicker Lucas Havrisik, leaving the organization with Dustin Hopkins and Cade York to compete for the starting job. Havrisik got into nine games with the Rams last season, connecting on 15 of his 20 field goal tries and 19 of his 22 extra points. In other kicker moves, the Commanders have added Ramiz Ahmed in the wake of the Brandon McManus release.

A former Washington starter and the primary Atlanta cornerback opposite A.J. Terrell last season, Moreau has experience playing both the slot and outside. The former third-round pick signed with the Texans earlier this offseason but did not make their 53-man roster.

The Lions attempted to keep David Blough by offering the Hard Knocks cast member a spot on their practice squad, but the three-year Detroit backup opted to head to Minnesota. He is currently on the Vikings’ 16-man taxi squad. A previous Aaron Rodgers backup, Boyle signed with the Lions last year.

Despite being a former second-round pick, Blair did not make the Seahawks’ 53-man roster this year. Knee injuries have sidelined him for most of the past two seasons. Seattle had stopped using Blair as a nickel, his primary role when on the field with the team that drafted him, during training camp.

Included as part of a 2019 trade that sent Marcus Peters to Baltimore, Young was also traded from the Rams to the Broncos last year. He started all 13 games he played in 2021 — seven as a Ram, six as a Bronco — and helped Denver fill the void created by Alexander Johnson and Josey Jewell‘s season-ending injuries. Young spent most of this offseason with the Raiders but did not make their roster.

Packers Cut Down Roster To 53

The Packers cut their roster down to 53 players today:

Waived/injured:

Placed on reserve/PUP:

The Packers ended up keeping only a pair of running backs in Aaron Jones and AJ Dillon, so the team must be feeling pretty confident that one of their waived RBs will pass through waivers and land on their practice squad. Patrick Taylor would seem to be the favorite for the RB3 role after collecting 25 touches in 2021. Meanwhile, the Packers kept seven wide receivers on their roster, so the release of Travis Fulgham was mostly due to a roster crunch.

The Packers no longer had a need for Ramiz Ahmed, as NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reports (on Twitter) that the team activated kicker Mason Crosby off PUP after the veteran passed his physical. Crosby missed training camp and preseason while recovering from offseason knee surgery.

We will keep track of today’s minor moves here:

Arizona Cardinals

Buffalo Bills

Carolina Panthers

Cincinnati Bengals

Green Bay Packers

New England Patriots

  • Signed: CB Devin Hafford

Philadelphia Eagles

San Francisco 49ers

The most notable name amongst the Cardinals’ cuts is Keke. The 25-year-old made 17 starts with the Packers over the past two seasons, and was claimed off waivers by the Texans in February. Houston cut him in May, however, leading him to the Cardinals. In the waning months of the offseason, the 2019 fifth-rounder will need to find another NFL home in time for Week 1.

Another recent Packers draftee being let go is Martin. The 2020 fifth-rounder made six appearances last season with Carolina, playing all-but exclusively on special teams. Each of the team’s other roster cuts had yet to play in for the Panthers, including Westry, who had showed potential in 2021 when briefly starting for the Ravens.
