Redskins Work Out Paxton Lynch, WRs

While Breshad Perriman‘s Monday workout was enough to land him a Redskins contract, the team brought in several notable free agents for visits as it begins Week 3 preparations.

Paxton Lynch‘s workout tour continued with a trip to Washington, and Ian Rapoport of NFL.com tweets Kendall Wright and Michael Floyd were also part of the contingent to audition for the Redskins.

The Redskins mark the fourth team Lynch has auditioned for, following the Bills, Lions and Eagles. Washington is carrying just two quarterbacks — Alex Smith and Colt McCoy — on its active roster and doesn’t have any on its practice squad. Lynch still has P-squad eligibility. The 24-year-old quarterback could not come close to justifying his draft status in Denver, but other teams continue to kick the tires on the once-highly regarded prospect.

Wright and Floyd saw the Vikings and Saints, respectively, deem them preseason cuts. While it’s been a bit since Floyd had a steady gig, Wright led the Bears in receiving last season. Washington signed Perriman on Monday afternoon, making him its latest wideout addition this season.

Eagles Work Out QB Paxton Lynch

The Eagles auditioned quarterback Paxton Lynch and a host of other free agents on Tuesday, according to Adam Caplan of SiriusXM (Twitter link).

Philadelphia, of course, has already brought in one failed early-round quarterback this year in Christian Hackenberg, who didn’t make it through final cutdowns. Lynch, a first-round selection in the 2016 draft, has already met with the Bills and Lions since being cut by the Broncos last week.

Lynch, 24, failed to beat out seventh-round signal-caller Trevor Siemian in Denver for two consecutive seasons, and though he ultimately did make starts for the Broncos, his performances were abysmal. In four career starts, Lynch has completed only 61.7% of his passes for 792 yards, four touchdowns, and four interceptions, and was dreadful again during the 2018 preseason.

The Eagles don’t necessarily need another quarterback on their roster, as Nate Sudfeld is currently backing up temporary starter Nick Foles. Carson Wentz, still recovering from a 2017 ACL tear, is expected to be sidelined for a few more weeks.

Lions Work Out Paxton Lynch

Paxton Lynch‘s post-Broncos tour continued as he visited today with the Lions, a source told Field Yates of ESPN (Twitter link). 

Lynch, a former first round pick, quickly fell out of favor in Denver and ultimately found himself out of a job when he was outplayed by 2017 seventh-rounder Chad Kelly during the preseason. Many teams still see something interesting in Lynch’s potential, and several clubs have been rumored to be interested.

Detroit would be an interesting landing spot for Lynch, as they cut their younger developmental option Jake Rudock recently at final cuts. Although they brought Ruddock back on the practice squad, they currently only have the aging Matt Cassel behind Matthew Stafford on the roster.

Lynch could slide in behind Cassel and be developed to be Stafford’s backup of the future. Lynch recently visited the Bills and has a few other tryouts scheduled, but it wouldn’t be a surprise for him to sign with the Lions. Either way, he shouldn’t be unemployed much longer.

Bills To Work Out Paxton Lynch

One of the interested Paxton Lynch parties appears to be the Bills, whom Ian Rapoport of NFL.com reports (on Twitter) will bring in the embattled former Broncos quarterback for a Tuesday audition.

Four teams are reportedly interested in bringing in Lynch for an audition, and the Bills make sense due to their quarterback depth chart. Nathan Peterman, who infamously threw five interceptions in a start against the Chargers last season, is set to be Buffalo’s Week 1 starter. Josh Allen is the backup after the Bills traded A.J. McCarron.

Lynch, though, still profiles as a developmental player. That makes the Buffalo fit interesting given their employment of a younger project passer in Allen. Lynch has made just four career starts and did not fare well this offseason, either, after 2017 Mr. Irrelevant Chad Kelly beat him out quickly for Denver’s backup job.

The Broncos went through three offensive coordinators during Lynch’s three years. One of those, Rick Dennison, was the Bills’ OC last year. But Brian Daboll is Buffalo’s top offensive voice now, meaning Lynch would have to process a fourth system if he joined the Bills.

Paxton Lynch Generating Interest

The Broncos found no takers for Paxton Lynch‘s first-round rookie contract, but now that the former high-profile investment cleared waivers, teams are exploring the idea of taking over in developing the struggling quarterback.

Four teams have thus far expressed interest in working out Lynch, Nicki Jhabvala of The Athletic reports (on Twitter). The third-year player will begin scheduling visits Tuesday, Mike Klis of 9News tweets.

As the 2016 first round wound down, Lynch was a hot commodity. The Broncos traded up to No. 26 to select him, outflanking the Cowboys. Jerry Jones lamented that turn of events at the time. The Chiefs were interested as well then, but they landed their long-term passer a year later. The Cowboys could make sense now, with Dak Prescott‘s backup situation not flush with proven talent, but it’s not certain at this point who’s contacting the 24-year-old quarterback.

Denver cut Lynch to make room for fellow 2016 draftee Kevin Hogan, a fifth-round pick that year. Hogan sits behind Case Keenum and Chad Kelly, who missed all of his rookie season due to injury. Kelly usurped Lynch for the Broncos’ backup-QB job early in the preseason.

The once-coveted Memphis product made just four starts in two seasons but may have options to continue his development soon and attempt to remove the “bust” label from his NFL career.

Sunday NFL Transactions: AFC West

Listed below are the Sunday roster moves for the four AFC West teams. Following the 53-man roster cutdown deadline yesterday, many teams will make slight tweaks to their rosters, claiming players off waivers or signing guys who clear waivers. Those transactions for the Broncos, Chiefs, Chargers, and Raiders are noted below.

Additionally, as of 12:00pm CT today, teams can begin constructing their 10-man practice squads. You can check out our glossary entry on practice squads to brush up on those changes, as well as all the other guidelines that govern the 10-man units, whose players practice with the team but aren’t eligible to suit up on Sundays.

Broncos To Cut Paxton Lynch

The Broncos’ Sunday-morning claim of Kevin Hogan will lead to a higher-profile quarterback’s exit. Paxton Lynch survived Denver’s initial cutdown day, but the Broncos are planning to cut him, Tom Pelissero of NFL.com tweets.

Lynch will go to waivers, and the Broncos’ quarterback depth chart now goes Case Keenum, Chad Kelly and Hogan. The latter is a 2016 fifth-round pick. Lynch went off that year’s board at No. 26 overall but failed to make much of an impression in Denver.

While the Broncos only gave him four starts in two seasons, the former Memphis standout consistently looked shaky in preseason games and could not beat out Trevor Siemian in the 2017 offseason. Injuries largely limited Lynch last year, leading to the Broncos’ Brock Osweiler signing, but he had a road map to becoming Keenum’s backup this offseason only to see Kelly — Mr. Irrelevant in 2017 — beat him out.

It might benefit Lynch to receive a fresh start, and a team potentially claiming him would get two more years of club control. And, while unlikely at this point, Lynch has a fifth-year option that covers the 2020 season as well. The 24-year-old quarterback has only thrown 128 career passes, completing 79 of them, in five games across his two-year career. He’s averaged just 6.2 yards per attempt.

It will cost the Broncos more than $4MM in dead money to waive Lynch. They are already eating more than $5MM in dead-money charges upon parting with Menelik Watson last month. It’s telling that Hogan (60 of 101 passing in eight career games with the Browns) will take Lynch’s spot, perhaps indicating the Broncos could not get any team to take their first-round bust off their hands.

AFC West Notes: Mack, Lynch, Henry

Yesterday’s trade that sent Khalil Mack from the Raiders to the Bears rocked the NFL world, and we can expect more details to trickle out in the coming days. For instance, Oakland GM Reggie McKenzie conceded yesterday that he never had any desire to trade Mack until the end. Per Josh Dubow of the Associated Press, McKenzie said, “My whole thought process was how to get Khalil in here. Absolutely, it was here at the end, it was in the final hour that it kind of just hit and it hit hard and heavy. It was not the plan to trade him at all.”

McKenzie also said he was not afraid to pay top dollar for Mack, but he just could not justify Mack’s asking price. He said, “We presented him with an offer. We got the counter back and talked about it with (agent Joel Segal). What they were demanding, it just wasn’t going to work” (Twitter link via Michael Gehlken of the Las Vegas Review-Journal). McKenzie, though, did not elaborate on how Mack’s counteroffer to the Raiders compared with the contract he ultimately landed with the Bears. Gehlken also tweets that more than half the league inquired on Mack, and Oakland ultimately narrowed the list of suitors to teams that it believed could be picking high in the first round in 2019.

Now let’s round up several more rumors from the AFC West:

  • Embattled QB Paxton Lynch is still on the Broncos‘ roster for now, but he may not be around for long. As James Palmer of the NFL Network tweets, Denver GM John Elway said he spoke with several free agent quarterbacks, but the QBs he was interested in did not have any interest in joining the Broncos. Elway did not name names, but it is clear that Denver could still move on from Lynch if the club can make an upgrade through free agency or the waiver wire.
  • The Broncos waived impressive rookie OLB Jeff Holland yesterday and likely hope that he will go unclaimed so they can put him on the practice squad. Nicki Jhabvala of The Athletic, however, tweets that she does not expected Holland to make it through waivers, as teams were expressing interest in him even before he was cut.
  • We heard several weeks ago that Chargers TE Hunter Henry could return this season, and as Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk points out, what the Bolts did during final cuts yesterday is in keeping with that report. Los Angeles elected to put Henry on the PUP list rather than injured reserve, which further supports the notion that, if the Chargers are in the playoff hunt late in the season, Henry could return to help get them over the hump.
  • The Raiders released WR Martavis Bryant yesterday, as Bryant is facing yet another drug-related suspension.
  • The Chiefs released CB David Amerson yesterday.

Broncos To Keep QB Paxton Lynch

Maligned after another shaky training camp and a mostly unimpressive preseason, Paxton Lynch was considered a possibility to be cut prior to what would be his third season in Denver.

The Broncos, however, will not sever ties with their 2016 first-round pick just yet. Although the team will look at other quarterbacks being jettisoned this weekend, they plan to keep Lynch on their 53-man roster, Mike Klis of 9News tweets.

Lynch played well in the Broncos’ fourth preseason game, but he was quickly demoted to the No. 3 QB job this preseason. Chad Kelly remains the Broncos’ backup, and this points to the team being satisfied enough with the 2017 seventh-rounder’s play to place him as Case Keenum‘s primary backup this season.

It would have cost the Broncos more than $4MM to waive Lynch.
