Nigel Bradham

Nigel Bradham Likely To Avoid Jail Time

Eagles linebacker Nigel Bradham has reached a deferred prosecution agreement that will move his assault case out of the courts and likely allow him to avoid jail time, reports Tim McManus of ESPN.com.Nigel Bradham (vertical)

Last July, Bradham was reportedly part of a six-person group that began arguing with a Hilton Bentley hotel employee over the amount of time it took to receive an umbrella they had apparently purchased. The scene grew violent, the worker was struck over the head with a glass bottle, and, according to a police report, Bradham “without provocation, struck the victim in the nose with a closed fist, causing the victim to fall to the ground.”

Bradham, who was charged with aggravated battery — a second degree felony — will likely avoid incarceration, but that doesn’t mean he won’t face NFL punishment, as Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk details. As of last October, the league was still investigating Bradham, and can impose its own penalties regardless of the legal outcome. As Florio writes, the baseline suspension under the NFL’s personal conduct policy is six games.

Bradham, 27, is also facing a misdemeanor weapons charge after bringing a gun into a Miami airport in October. He’ll attend a hearing related to that case on July 24, according to McManus.

NFL Still Investigating Agholor, Bradham

Eagles wide receiver Nelson Agholor was not charged in connection with a rape accusation that was made against him earlier this summer, but the league is continuing to review Agholor under the league’s personal conduct policy, per ESPN’s Adam Caplan (article via Tim McManus of ESPN.com).

A dancer at Cheerleaders Gentlemen’s Club in Philadelphia accused Agholor of rape back in June, an accusation that launched a police investigation. That investigation, however, yielded insufficient evidence to charge Agholor with any wrongdoing, which led to the following statement from Philadelphia District Attorney R. Seth Williams:

“The District Attorney’s Family Violence and Sexual Assault Unit and detectives from the Philadelphia Police Department’s Special Victims Unit thoroughly investigated the allegations of sexual assault against Nelson Agholor. As a result of this joint investigation, our staff and the Police reached the conclusion that we lacked sufficient evidence to bring charges against Mr. Agholor, therefore no charges will be filed.”

Agholor, selected in the first round of the 2015 draft, has not demonstrated a great deal of on-field improvement in 2016 after a disappointing rookie campaign. The USC product has caught 16 passes for 181 yards and a score, and he has shown little to suggest that he could develop into the top-flight receiver that the Eagles expected. A suspension would certainly not help matters.

McManus adds that the NFL is also reviewing a pair of incidents involving Eagles linebacker Nigel Bradham. In July, Bradham was reportedly part of a six-person group that began arguing with a Hilton Bentley hotel employee over the amount of time it took to receive an umbrella they had apparently purchased. The scene grew violent, and the worker was struck over the head with a glass bottle, and, according to the police report, Bradham “without provocation, struck the victim in the nose with a closed fist, causing the victim to fall to the ground.” Bradham was charged with aggravated battery, a second-degree felony, as a result of that incident.

Bradham was then arrested earlier this month for bringing a loaded gun to Miami International Airport. Officials at the time said it was clear that there was no criminal intent, but they had to arrest Bradham given his pending assault case.

Bradham signed a two-year, $7MM deal with the Eagles this offseason, and he has started each of the club’s five games in 2016, compiling 16 tackles and an interception.

Eagles linebacker Nigel Bradham was arrested for bringing a loaded gun to Miami International Airport, according to a report from TMZ. Bradham, 27, says that he forgot to remove his firearm from his backpack. Officials say “it was clear that there was no criminal intent” in Bradham’s actions, but they had to arrest him given his assault case from over the summer. Nigel Bradham (vertical)

Bradham has a concealed weapons permit and it sounds like he made an absent-minded move by bringing his gun with him to the airport. On the other hand, this marks Bradham’s second run-in with the law in recent months. Today’s news has to be concerning to the Eagles and it could get him in more hot water with the league office. Bradham told reporters that he has a hearing related to his July incident this week.

NFC East Notes: Gregory, Eagles, Bradham

While Cowboys defensive lineman Randy Gregory is in a treatment facility, his representatives are fighting a second suspension – in addition to the four-game ban he is already faced with – that could keep him off the field for the bulk of the 2016 season.

If Gregory’s appeal is unsuccessful, the NFL will have the discretion to suspend him for an additional ten games for total of 14 or the league could add six games to his existing four-game ban, giving him a ten-game suspension in total, Ed Werder of ESPN.com tweets. David Moore of the Dallas Morning News (on Twitter) senses that Gregory’s ban is more likely to be for ten games than 14 since the NFL’s substance abuse policy is geared more towards rehabilitation than punishment.

Here’s more from the NFC East:

  • Eagles coach Doug Pederson doesn’t foresee releasing linebacker Nigel Bradham after his bizarre dustup with a hotel employee, Zach Berman of The Philadelphia Inquirer tweets. Pederson went on to say that he considers him a starting linebacker. Bradham was reportedly part of a six-person group that began arguing with a Hilton Bentley hotel employee over the amount of time it took to receive an umbrella they had apparently purchased. Bradham turned himself into Miami police and was charged with aggravated battery, a second-degree felony.
  • Pederson acknowledged the Eagles had interest in Anquan Boldin before he was signed by the Lions, Berman tweets. As shown on Roster Resource, the Eagles currently have Jordan Matthews, Nelson Agholor, Rueben Randle, Josh Huff, Chris Givens, T.J. Graham, and Hunter Sharp at wide receiver.
  • Darren McFadden‘s latest elbow scan was encouraging and he is on schedule to be ready for the beginning of the Cowboys‘ regular season, Jason Cole of Bleacher Report tweets.
  • The Redskins are evaluating their young running backs and outside linebackers first before making any signings, Mike Jones of the Washington Post tweets.

Bradham was reportedly part of a six-person group that began arguing with a Hilton Bentley hotel employee over the amount of time it took to receive an umbrella they had apparently purchased. The scene grew violent, and the worker was struck over the head with a glass bottle, and, according to the police report, Bradham “without provocation, struck the victim in the nose with a closed fist, causing the victim to fall to the ground.” The group eventually left, but police located a cell phone and a receipt indicating Bradham had paid for the umbrella.

The Eagles issued a statement confirming that they are aware of the situation, but offered no further comment on Bradham, who signed a two-year, $7MM deal during the offseason and is expected to report to training camp tomorrow, tweets Les Bowen of the Philadelphia Daily News. Bradham, 26, becomes the second Eagle to enter legal hot water this year, as wide receiver Nelson Agholor was accused of rape in June before being cleared of all charges earlier this month.

NFC Rumors: Kelly, Eagles, Randle, Cowboys

Chip Kelly told Philadelphia-area media, including Jeff McLane of Philly.com, he didn’t communicate directly with Howie Roseman last season before being fired by the Eagles. The current 49ers coach said owner Jeffrey Lurie constructed an arrangement where the then-demoted Roseman sent messages to the then-empowered Kelly through player personnel VP Ed Marynowitz.

Kelly also asserted he didn’t control the contracts given to Byron Maxwell and DeMarco Murray, with the three-year Eagles coach telling media Roseman, who has since traded both players, constructed those deals.

I wasn’t the personnel guy. I was in charge of the 90-man roster,” Kelly said. “But I didn’t negotiate and say this guy gets this amount of money and that guy gets that amount of money. And Ed was the one who ran our personnel department. That really fell on Ed’s shoulders in terms of how he handled everything. And Ed communicated with him all the time.

Here’s some more on the Eagles and news from some additional NFC teams.

  • Former Eagles first-round linebacker Marcus Smith will move to defensive end in Jim Schwartz‘s 4-3 scheme, Zach Berman of Philly.com reports. Doug Pederson told media, including Berman, his linebackers right now will consist of Mychal Kendricks on the weak side, Jordan Hicks in the middle and Nigel Bradham on the strong side.
  • The Vikings inquired about Rueben Randle early in free agency, Darren Wolfson of KSTP tweets, but no substantial interest materialized prior to Randle choosing to trek to Philadelphia.
  • The Giants, however, had no interest in re-signing Randle, Jordan Raanan of the Star-Ledger tweets. John Mara said last week the Giants were going to seek receiving help, but the market has been mostly raided in terms of notable first-time free agents. Veterans Roddy White, Marques Colston and Percy Harvin remain unsigned.
  • The Cowboys are expected meet with Paxton Lynch again before the draft after doing so in a productive meeting today, NFL.com’s Rand Getlin tweets. Dallas is allotted 30 visits with prospects.
  • Washington safety Kyshoen Jarrett‘s status is uncertain for this season, with Jay Gruden telling media — including JP Finlay of CSNMidAtlantic.com — he’s “very concerned” about the lack of strength in Jarrett’s shoulder presently. A key backup and part-time starter as a rookie last season, Jarrett was injured in Week 17 against the Cowboys.

Free Agency Rumors: Dolphins, Penn, Bushrod

Before he agreed to terms with Philadelphia, new Eagles linebacker Nigel Bradham also received interest from the Browns, Buccaneers and Jaguars, as he tells Alex Marvez of FOX Sports (Twitter link). Bradham further stated that his former team, the Bills, backed out of contract talks.

Meanwhile, in addition to having lost out on Bradham, the Browns swung and missed on receiver Rishard Matthews, according to Adam Caplan of ESPN.com (Twitter link). Caplan reports that Cleveland was one of several teams in play for Matthews, who agreed to sign with Tennessee on a three-year deal.

After a busy day around the NFL, we still have a few more rumors related to free agents who signed today, and free agents who are still on the market. Let’s dive in…

  • The Dolphins aren’t looking to invest much money in a backup quarterback, Marvez tweets. Matt Moore is paying a visit to the Cowboys this week, and it seems Moore may not be back in Miami for the 2016 season.
  • The Giants have shown interest in free agent left tackle Donald Penn, according to Jordan Raanan of NJ.com (Twitter link). The reliable Penn has started 16 games in eight straight seasons, including the last two in Oakland.
  • Offensive tackle Jermon Bushrod, whom the Bears cut last month, is garnering “ample interest” in spite of recent shoulder surgery, reports Jason La Canfora of CBSSports.com (on Twitter). He’s planning to visit the Dolphins and Vikings, La Canfora adds.
  • Prior to re-signing with the Bengals, cornerback Adam Jones drew the Vikings’ attention, he told Geoff Hobson of Bengals.com. On Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer, Jones said, “I love Zim. He really treated me well through this, but this is the place where I know.”
  • At least four teams – including the Bears – have expressed interest in return man Marc Mariani, per Jeff Dickerson of ESPN.com (Twitter link). Paul Gutierrez of ESPN.com reports that the 49ers and Raiders are also among those clubs in the mix for Mariani, who played the last two seasons in Chicago.

Eagles, Nigel Bradham Agree To Two-Year Deal

The Eagles and free agent linebacker Nigel Bradham have agreed to a deal, reports Peter Schrager of FOX Sports (Twitter link). It’s a two-year accord, per Albert Breer of NFL.com (on Twitter). Financial details are not yet available.

Bradham’s decision to sign with Philadelphia will reunite him with defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz. The two were together in Buffalo in 2014, when Bradham posted easily the best season of his four-year career. The ex-Florida State Seminole totaled 104 tackles, 2.5 sacks, two forced fumbles and an interception in 14 games under Schwartz, also earning a reserve spot on Pro Football Focus’ Pro Bowl team. Bradham’s performance fell off significantly without Schwartz last season, as he struggled to fit into the Bills’ Rex Ryan-led defense. The 26-year-old totaled 45 fewer tackles (59) and one sack in 11 games, ranking 81st out of 97 qualifying LBs at PFF.

In Philadelphia, Bradham figures to garner significant playing time in a linebacking corps that no longer features his ex-Buffalo teammate Kiko Alonso, whom the Eagles traded to Miami earlier today. Bradham will join a high-upside group featuring Mychal Kendricks and Jordan Hicks.

Free Agent Rumors: Ivory, Eagles, Powers

Chris Ivory wants roughly $6.5MM per year and is looking for at least a three-year commitment, Kimberley A. Martin of Newsday tweets. Some might view that as an ambitious ask, but Ivory could net that sort of deal this offseason given that there are many teams with significant cap space to use. On PFR’s list of top free agent running backs, Ivory stands as the No. 4 option behind Doug Martin, Lamar Miller, and Matt Forte.

Here are the very latest free agent rumors:

  • The Eagles have reached out to linebacker Nigel Bradham, Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer tweets. The 26-year-old has a history with Philly DC Jim Schwartz.
  • Jerraud Powers says he’s unsure about future with the Cardinals as free agency nears, Josh Weinfuss of ESPN.com writes. “I think it’s close but at the same time, it’s not,” Powers said. “We’ve been in talks, but I don’t know what the waiting process is like. I’m starting to think that maybe they’re just going to move in another direction.” Powers, who made $4.35MM last season, wants a three- or four-year deal. He also says that he wants to join a club with a “winning pedigree” that can contend in 2016.
  • The Giants are nowhere near done making moves on the defensive line, Jordan Raanan of the Star-Ledger tweets. Raanan cautions to expect several more big moves. Earlier today, the Giants reached agreement with JPP on a new deal.
  • Charles Johnson has already visited the Giants and Buccaneers, but he might be signing with a different club based on the tone of this tweet. “2mor u will know my future!!! It’s going to be epic,” Johnson wrote.
