Jets Cut CB Nate Hairston

Nate Hairston is a free agent. ESPN’s Rich Cimini reports (via Twitter) that the Jets have cut the cornerback.

Last August, the Jets traded a conditional 2020 sixth-round pick to the Colts for the defensive back. Hairston ended up getting into 11 games (six starts) for New York, compiling 24 tackles, three passes defended, and one interception.

The 2017 fifth-round pick spent the first two seasons of his career with the Colts. He saw time in 27 games (11 starts) for Indy, compiling 65 tackles, two sacks, six passes defended, and one interception. During his Colts tenure, Hairston missed time with a concussion and a hamstring injury.

Hairston seemed like a long shot to make the 2020 Jets roster. Pierre Desir, Bless Austin, and Brian Poole are tentatively penciled in as starters, while Bryce Hall, Arthur Maulet, Quincy Wilson are projected to make the team as backups.

Colts Trade Nate Hairston To Jets

The Colts have agreed to trade cornerback Nate Hairston to the Jets, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.com (on Twitter). In exchange, the Jets will send a 2020 sixth-round pick to Indianapolis. 

The Jets had two sixth-round picks thanks to the Darron Lee trade, but the Colts will receive the lower of the two in the swap, Rich Cimini of ESPN.com tweets.

The Jets’ need for cornerback help has been well-documented and they’ve addressed that need somewhat by acquiring Harrison. He’s not a star player, but he does have eleven starts to his credit over the past two years. He’s also under contract through 2020, giving Gang Green an opportunity to keep him in the fold beyond this season.

Harrison, by all accounts, had a solid camp, but the Colts’ logjam at cornerback allowed them to deal from a surplus. They’ll pick up a late-round draft choice for the 25-year-old and the Jets will plug him into their depth chart as a versatile cornerback/safety option.

Colts Promote CB Jalen Collins

Jalen Collins has not played in an NFL game since Super Bowl LI, seeing suspensions hijack his career. But the embattled cornerback landed on the Colts’ practice squad earlier this season. He may have a chance to suit up again.

The Colts made the decision to promote the former second-round pick from their practice squad Saturday.

With five corners on their roster going into a win-or-go-home game against the Titans on Sunday night, the Colts have backup Nate Hairston listed as questionable. Collins provides insurance.

The Falcons waived Collins earlier this year. He served 10-game suspensions for violating the NFL’s PED policy the past two years. Atlanta did not activate Collins after his 2017 ban ended and did not bother keeping him around during his 10-game hiatus this year.

Collins made two starts for Atlanta during the 2016 regular season, intercepting two passes, and started in each of the team’s three playoff games that year.
