Jets Release LB Alec Ogletree

Alec Ogletree‘s atypical stay with the Jets may be at an end. The Jets announced they have released the veteran linebacker, doing so to make room for Le’Veon Bell‘s return and practice squad promotions.

The Jets could stash Ogletree back on their practice squad, which is how he originally caught on with Gang Green despite his seven seasons of experience as a starter. Ogletree does not have to go through waivers, with the trade deadline not yet here, so the former first-round pick is back in free agency.

A two-year Giants starter and five-year Rams first-stringer before heading to New York, Ogletree played in two Jets games. He made one start, upon being promoted from the Jets’ taxi squad in Week 2. After not playing in Week 3, the 29-year-old defender saw action in a reserve capacity last week. Ogletree played 56% of Gang Green’s snaps in both Week 2 and Week 4.

While Bell is officially back on the Jets’ active roster, the team also promoted quarterback Mike White, offensive lineman Jimmy Murray and cornerback Lamar Jackson. They also waived wide receiver Josh Malone.

With Sam Darnold out against the Cardinals, the Jets are starting Joe Flacco. They also have James Morgan on their active roster; White will make four QBs on the team’s 55-man Sunday roster. A former Cowboys fifth-round pick in 2018, White has not dressed for a game.

NFL Practice Squad Updates: 10/5/20

Today’s practice squad updates will be posted here:

New York Giants

New York Jets

White was a fifth-round pick of the Cowboys out of Western Kentucky in 2018. He signed with the Jets’ practice squad the following year and spent most of the 2019 season there. He was on the active roster for a bit this season before being cut last week. Holton has spent time with the Raiders, Eagles, and Steelers, and he had 218 yards and three touchdowns with the Raiders in 2017. He was a special teamer in Pittsburgh last year.

The Texans could be looking for specialist help, as they worked out a pair of punters and a longsnapper. Boddy-Calhoun, who worked out for the Vikings, is probably the biggest name on this list. He started at least seven games for the Browns each of the past three seasons, but was released by Houston at final cuts.

Cowboys Get Down To 53

The Cowboys have made their cuts to get down to 53 players. Nothing too surprising on this list, although there is at least one interesting takeaway. The Cowboys cut three running backs, leaving Alfred Morris and Tony Pollard as the only two currently with the team. That’s a strong indicator that the team is expecting Ezekiel Elliott back before Week 1.

Receiver Devin Smith also made the roster as their final receiver, which is a nice feel-good story. Drafted by the Jets 37th overall back in 2015, multiple ACL tears derailed his promising career. Smith has had brutal injury luck and hasn’t appeared in a game since 2016, so this is nice to see.

Cowboys Sign 8 Draft Choices

The Cowboys now have all but one of their nine 2018 draft choices signed. Headlined by linebacker Leighton Vander Esch, Dallas reached agreements with everyone but third-round wide receiver Michael Gallup on Friday, Todd Archer of ESPN.com reports. Here’s the full list of signees:

The structure of the Boise State product’s contract slightly held up the team’s proceedings with its top draft investment, per the Fort Worth Star-Telegram’s Clarence Hill (Twitter link), but he’s now signed up. Vander Esch will earn approximately $11.847MM and collect a $6.696MM signing bonus.

Vander Esch met with numerous teams that held picks in the middle of the first round, and despite needs at both pass-catching positions, the Cowboys selected the Mountain West Conference standout. Connor Williams also didn’t play a position of dire need, given Dallas’ three All-Pro linemen, but he’s now in the mix for the team’s left guard spot.

Despite being unsigned, Gallup is working out at the Cowboys’ rookie minicamp on Friday. Many third-round picks around the league have yet to sign. This is an annual tradition due to the CBA’s gray area regarding third-rounders’ compensation.
