Minor Moves: Thursday

Here are Thursday’s minor transactions from around the NFL, with the latest moves added to the top of the page throughout the day:

  • According to Aaron Wilson of the Baltimore Sun (via Twitter), the following players are now on their respective teams’ injured reserve lists: Darnell Dockett (Cardinals), Greg Latta (Broncos), Fendi Onobun (Jaguars), Jeremy Deering (Raiders), and Mike Caussin (Redskins). Because he has four or more accrued seasons, Dockett can be placed on IR without passing through waivers, and we heard previously that Latta, Onobun, and Deering were waived-injured by their clubs. Caussin’s case is less clear — he doesn’t appear to have four accrued seasons, so he should have to be waived before landing on IR. For what it’s worth, the Redskins’ official site still lists him as on the team’s active roster.

  • Former Falcon Eric Weems has returned to the team, according to Jay Adams of AtlantaFalcons.com, who tweets that wideout Jabin Sambrano has been cut to make room for the veteran receiver and return specialist. Vaughn McClure of ESPN.com, who reported earlier this week that Weems wanted to sign with Atlanta but appeared headed to the Titans, said today (via Twitter) that the ex-Bear took a physical in Tennessee, but it hit a snag. The Falcons, who entered the picture last night, signed Weems to a one-year, minimum-salary contract, per McClure (Twitter link).
  • The Saints have begun making cuts in advance of next Tuesday’s first deadline, parting ways with four players today. As Katherine Terrell of the New Orleans Times-Picayune details, the club waived outside linebacker Chidera Uzo-Diribe, running back Tim Flanders, tight end Je’Ron Hamm and wide receiver Tobais Palmer.
  • Defensive tackle Anthony McCloud has been waived by the Cardinals, opening up a second spot on the team’s 90-man roster, tweets Darren Urban of AZCardinals.com.
  • The Buccaneers have swapped a pair of players at the back of their roster, announcing today in a press release that they’ve signed guard R.J. Mattes and waived defensive end James Ruffin.
  • The Patriots have made two cuts, letting go of defensive lineman Marcus Forston and tight end D.J. Williams, according to a team release.

Minor Moves: Caussin, Adams, McCray

The Redskins have signed tight end Mike Caussin, recently released by the Bills, and waived long-snapper Kyle Nelson, per Adam Caplan (via Twitter). Caussin (6-5, 243) entered the league as an undrafted free agent in 2010. He played in six games, catching five balls for 41 yards for the Bills in 2011, the last time he appeared in a game. He missed the 2012 season because of a torn ACL and was sidelined by a hip injury in 2013.

  • The Giants waived Kris Adams (failed physical) from the PUP list, according to Aaron Wilson of the Baltimore Sun (via Twitter).
  • The Saints have cut defensive tackle Moses McCray, per ESPN’s Mike Triplett (via Twitter). McCray had signed an undrafted free agent out of Akron.

Bills Sign Stevenson Sylvester

The Bills announced a pair of minor moves earlier today. Buffalo signed former Steelers linebacker Stevenson Sylvester and released tight end Mike Caussin to make room for his arrival.

Sylvester, who stands at 6’2″ and weighs in at 231 pounds, has played the last four seasons for the Steelers mainly on special teams. The former fifth-round pick (2010) has appeared in 50 games in his NFL career and has lined up at both inside and outside linebacker. Sylvester was a three-time Mountain West Conference honoree in college playing at Utah. Stevenson, who turns 26 on Friday, gives the Bills another player to compete at LB following the loss of Kiko Alonso to a season-ending knee injury. One would expect Sylvester to push Ty Powell and rookie Randell Johnson for a role on special teams.

Caussin has been with the Bills for four years but has not played in an NFL game since 2011 thanks in large part to injuries.

FA Signings: Buccaneers, Colts, Bears, Bills

Among the big name signings flying around today, here are a few minor signings that might have slid under the radar:

  • The Buccaneers have re-signed cornerback Danny Gorrer, according to Greg Auman of TampaBay.com (via Twitter). Gorrer has bounced around the league, playing for three teams in three years before landing with the Buccaneers in 2012.
  • The Colts have agreed to a contract to retain safety Sergio Brown, reports Aaron Wilson of the Baltimore Sun (via Twitter). Brown has played the last two seasons with the Colts.
  • The Bears have signed linebacker Jordan Senn, according to Rich Campbell of the Chicago Tribune (via Twitter). Senn had played the last four seasons with the Panthers.
  • The Bills have re-signed tight end Mike Caussin, according to Mark Gaughan of the Buffalo News (via Twitter). Caussin has not played in an NFL game since 2011.
