2020 NFL Opt Out Tracker

Per an agreement between the NFL and the NFLPA, players with COVID-19 health concerns can opt out of the 2020 season. Initially, the deadline was believed to be Tuesday, August 4. Talks between the league and the union have pushed it to August 6.

Chiefs guard and medical school graduate Laurent Duvernay-Tardif was the first player to officially opt out. Scores of players followed.

Jaguars Decline ASJ’s Option

Nearly a month after Austin Seferian-Jenkins bid farewell to the Jaguars, the team announced the tight end’s Jacksonville stay will indeed be limited to one year.

The Jaguars declined the $4MM 2019 option on Seferian-Jenkins’ contract. He will become a free agent when the new league year opens March 13. This move will save the Jags $4.3MM. The Jags had until 11pm Monday to make these decisions.

One of Jacksonville’s high-priced defensive linemen will be staying, however. The Jags picked up Calais Campbell‘s $3MM 2019 option. Campbell is on the Jags’ books at $14.5MM this coming season.

ASJ signed a two-year, $10MM deal with the Jaguars in 2018. He did not contribute much on a woeful offense, heading to IR after five games. After somewhat of a bounce-back season with the Jets, Seferian-Jenkins posted just 90 receiving yards last season. He will head to free agency without much momentum. The former second-round pick is still just 26, however, and should receive another opportunity on a light tight end market.

While Campbell will be part of the 2019 Jaguars, it is not certain two of his defensive line mates — Malik Jackson and Marcell Dareus — will join him. His playing time having diminished last season, Jackson said he expects to be released. A Dareus cut would save the Jags nearly $11MM, while jettisoning Jackson would bring exactly $11MM in savings for a Jags team that, even after the ASJ move, remains over the projected salary cap.

Jacksonville also exercised $750K options for defensive end Lerentee McCray and safety Cody Davis.

Jaguars Sign LB Lerentee McCray

Linebacker Lerentee McCray is joining the Jaguars, reports NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport (via Twitter). The deal is worth $3.5MM with $1MM guaranteed.

The former undrafted free agent had a career-year during his lone season in Buffalo. In 13 games, McCray finished with 16 tackles and one forced fumble while accounting for 163 total snaps. The linebacker previously spent time with the Broncos and Packers.

McCray will join a Jaguars linebacker corps that currently has Myles Jack, Paul Posluszny, and Telvin Smith slotted in as starters. The 26-year-old defender will presumably be in the mix for a reserve role along with Dan Skuta, Marcus Rush, Sean Porter, and Hayes Pullard.

Packers Trade Lerentee McCray To Bills

The Bills are set to acquire linebacker Lerentee McCray from the Packers in exchange for draft pick compensation, tweets Adam Schefter of ESPN.com. The Packers will receive a conditional 2018 seventh-round draft choice, per an announcement from the Bills. The Packers have also made a handful of roster moves, bringing them down to 75 in advance of the deadline.

McCray appeared in 24 regular season games for the Broncos over the last two years. This offseason, he was a restricted free agent but he was not tendered an offer. In April, he hooked on with the Packers.

North Notes: Packers, McCray, RG3, Lions

Here’s the latest out of the NFL’s two North divisions…

  • Rob Demovsky of ESPN.com has the details of linebacker Lerentee McCray‘s recently signed contract with the Packers. McCray got a $50K signing bonus and could make another $75K in workout bonuses – a high amount for a street free agent, Demovsky notes – and $200K in sack incentives (Twitter link). McCray, 25, was mostly a contributor on special teams with Denver from 2014-15, but the Packers believe he’s capable of helping them defensively. “We think he’s got a nice body type, he’s got good athletic ability, shows the ability to be an outside ‘backer with length and that sort of thing,” said general manager Ted Thompson.
  • Robert Griffin III’s offseason training with throwing guru Tom House is going well so far, the Browns quarterback said Thursday. “Tom House has been great. It’s been a really, really beneficial experience,” Griffin stated (link via Nate Ulrich of the Akron Beacon Journal). House, an ex-Major League Baseball pitcher who uses 3-D motions analysis to dissect a QB’s throwing motion and then revamps it, has worked with the likes of Tom Brady, Drew Brees, Andy Dalton and Carson Palmer in the past. He spent a large portion of last offseason with Dalton, who went on to have a career year. On whether he’ll continue training with House, Griffin said, “Without a doubt. It’s not just a one-off thing. It’s a lifestyle. I plan on living that lifestyle.”
  • Though no signing has been announced yet, the Lions are expected to bring punter Kyle Christy aboard today following a workout session, according to Greg Auman of the Tampa Bay Times (Twitter link). Christy, who last played at Florida at 2014 and has never spent time on an NFL roster, will presumably act as competition for incumbent punter Sam Martin. Martin is entering the final season of his rookie contract, and notably changed agents in February, signalling that he could be open to an extension.

Minor NFL Transactions: 4/18/16

We’ve rounded up today’s RFA and ERFA tender signings in another post, so we’ll focus on the rest of the minor NFL transactions here…

  • The Rams have agreed to terms with running back Chase Reynolds on a one-year deal, reports Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch (Twitter link). Reynolds has never received a carry, but as Thomas notes, he’s a core special-teamer, having played on more than 46% of the Rams’ ST snaps.
  • Another special teams ace, linebacker Lerentee McCray, has signed with the Packers, according to Rob Demovsky of ESPN.com. The 25-year-old McCray had appeared in 24 games over the past two seasons with the Broncos.
  • Washington announced that it has signed offensive lineman Cody Booth, a former undrafted free agent who has spent time with both the Jaguars and Bears. Booth has yet to appear in a regular season NFL game.
  • The Bills announced (via Twitter) that they’ve released defensive back Cam Thomas (not to be confused with the defensive tackle of the same name). This Cam Thomas — a Western Kentucky product — has never appeared in an NFL contest.
  • The Texans released quarterback B.J. Daniels, according to John McClain of the Houston Chronicle (Twitter link). Daniels, a quarterback at South Florida, made the switch to receiver with the Seahawks before moving back to QB with Houston.
