Wednesday NFL Transactions: AFC South

Following the 53-man roster cutdown deadline Tuesday, many teams will make slight tweaks to their rosters. In addition to waiver claims, teams can begin constructing their 16-man practice squads today. These Colts, Jaguars, Texans and Titans moves are noted below.

Jaguars Move Down To 53-Man Roster

The Jaguars are the latest team to squeeze their roster down to 53 players Tuesday. Here are the players the Urban Meyer-led regime cut to get there:

Some big names at wideout appear on this list, and the Jags also released former first-round pick Phillip Dorsett earlier Tuesday. Cooper is a former All-Pro kick returner who has held regular return gigs since that 2017 breakout. The fifth-year role player was the Cardinals’ primary return man in 2019 and filled the same role with the Panthers last season. Like Dorsett, Treadwell arrived as a first-round pick. But the former Vikings draftee has not been able to find steady footing in the league.

Jacksonville drafted Williams in the 2019 third round — two rounds after younger brother Quinnen went to the Jets — but the young linebacker did not start a game in 2020. Luton did, but the Oregon State product did not profile as a steady backup option. The Jags are going with Meyer-era investments Trevor Lawrence and C.J. Beathard at QB. The Wilson move comes after the veteran safety operated as a Jags back-line starter for the past two seasons.

Jaguars Sign Laquon Treadwell

The Jaguars have signed Laquon Treadwell, per a club announcement. Treadwell participated in the Jaguars’ minicamp as a tryout player earlier this week and wound up earning a spot on the 90-man roster. 

Treadwell, 26, came into the league as a first-round pick for the Vikings. Scouts had high hopes for the Ole Miss product, but he has yet to reach his potential. Across four seasons in Minnesota, Treadwell recorded a total of 65 receptions for 701 yards and two scores. His best season came in 2018, when he set career-highs in receptions (35) and receiving yards (302). For what it’s worth, he finished the ’19 slate with a 20.4-yard-per-catch average, but did so on just nine catches.

Last year, he hooked on with the Falcons’ practice squad and saw some time on the varsity roster. In 2020, he notched six grabs for 49 yards and two TDs in five games. Now, he’ll look to solidify his spot behind Jacksonville receivers D.J. Chark, longtime Lions WR Marvin Jones, and Laviska Shenault. Phillip Dorsett and veteran returner Pharoh Cooper are also among those vying spots.

Laquon Treadwell Visits Jaguars

Laquon Treadwell will participate in the Jaguars’ minicamp as a tryout player, per a club announcement. He’ll be joined by a handful of other roster hopefuls, including cornerbacks Simenon Thomas and KeiVarae Russell and offensive lineman Jerald Hawkins.

Treadwell, who just turned 26 today, came into the league as the No. 23 overall pick in the 2016 draft. That didn’t pan out for the Vikings. He caught just one pass as a rookie, and never topped 302 yards during his four years in Minnesota. The Vikes declined his fifth-year option, leading him to the Falcons last year. He was used sparingly in Atlanta, recording just six grabs for 49 yards in five games. On the plus side, two of those catches were for touchdowns.

The Jaguars’ WR depth chart is headlined by D.J. Chark, veteran Marvin Jones, and Laviska Shenault. Currently, the Jaguars count 12 receivers on their 90-man roster, including notable names like Phillip Dorsett and return man Pharoh Cooper. No one’s expecting the Ole Miss product to fulfill his draft day expectations, but he could have a chance to make a dent with Urban Meyer & Co.

Falcons Sign Laquon Treadwell To 53

A former first-rounder is back on an active roster. Receiver Laquon Treadwell has been activated off the practice squad COVID list and signed to the Falcons’ 53-man roster, the team announced Tuesday.

Fellow receiver Olamide Zaccheaus was placed on injured reserve with a toe injury in a corresponding roster move. The Vikings drafted Treadwell 23rd overall in 2016, but obviously that pick never panned out. He caught only one pass as a rookie, and never topped 302 yards during his four years in Minnesota. After his rookie deal expired (with his fifth-year option not being picked up), he signed with Atlanta back in March.

He was waived at final cuts, but quickly added back to the practice squad. Now with Zaccheaus headed to IR and Julio Jones nursing a hamstring injury that kept him on the sidelines in Week 12, Treadwell could manage to get some playing time. Still only 25, it’s nice to see the Ole Miss product get another opportunity.

Zaccheaus is a 2019 UDFA from Virginia. He made the 53-man roster as a rookie but played mostly on special teams, catching three passes for 115 yards. This time around he’d been playing a bigger role, and had a couple of huge games in Weeks 4 and 9 when he went off for 86 and 103 yards respectively. The unheralded wideout will be eligible to return in Week 16. If he doesn’t make it back, he’ll finish his sophomore campaign with 20 catches for 274 yards and a touchdown while making two starts.

Laquon Treadwell‘s NFL journey continues. On Monday, the former first-round pick agreed to join the Falcons’ practice squad, as NFL.com’s Tom Pelissero tweets.

Treadwell never made a mark during his time with the Vikings. The 2016 first-round pick out of Ole Miss ultimately spent four seasons in Minnesota, hauling in 65 receptions for 701 receiving yards and two scores in 53 games (16 starts). His best season came in 2018, when he set career-highs in receptions (35) and receiving yards (302). For what it’s worth, he finished the ’19 slate with a 20.4-yard-per-catch average, but did so on just nine catches.

In March, the Falcons gave Treadwell a shot on a low-cost deal. But, with Julio Jones, Calvin Ridley, Russell Gage, and Olamide Zaccheaus already locked in as the top receivers, Treadwell was facing long odds from the jump. Now, he’ll wait for his next opportunity on the taxi squad.

After falling to the Seahawks in their season opener, the Falcons will look for redemption on Sunday against the Cowboys.

Falcons Release Laquon Treadwell, Slash Roster To 53

Atlanta added Treadwell last year but did not see a considerable impact from the former first-round pick. The Vikings cut Treadwell ahead of the 2019 regular season, following the formerly coveted prospects struggles to claim a consistent role in Minnesota.

Wilcox re-signed with the Falcons a month ago. He has played for five teams but has not seen regular-season action since the 2018 season. The former Cowboys started suffered a season-ending injury last summer.

The cuts of Benkert and Lauletta leave two quarterbacks — Matt Ryan and Matt Schaub — on Atlanta’s roster. With Ryan being one of the most durable passers in the NFL, the Falcons can take advantage of an extra roster spot by keeping just two QBs.

Falcons Cut WR Laquon Treadwell

Laquon Treadwell is hitting free agency once again. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports (via Twitter) that the wideout has been cut by the Falcons.

The 2016 first-round pick out of Ole Miss never made a name for himself during his time with the Vikings. Treadwell ultimately spent four seasons in Minnesota, hauling in 65 receptions for 701 receiving yards and two scores in 53 games (16 starts). His best season came in 2018, when he set career-highs in receptions (35) and receiving yards (302).

Treadwell signed with the Falcons back in March, and there was some hope that he’d emerge as a dependable back-of-the-rotation receiver. However, the team already had Julio Jones and Calvin Ridley locked in atop the depth chart, while Russell Gage and Olamide Zaccheaus seemed like guarantees to make the squad. That meant the 25-year-old Treadwell was competing with six other wideouts for one or two spots, so it was always going to be an uphill battle for him to make the Falcons.

Still, considering his age and draft stock, it wouldn’t be shocking if Treadwell gets at least one more shot in the NFL.

Laquon Treadwell will have a chance to prove himself with another team. After the former first-round pick underwhelmed for four seasons with the Vikings, he will join the Falcons. The team announced the move.

The 2016 first-round pick could not justify that draft status in Minnesota, being released and re-signed in 2019 and totaling just 65 receptions for 701 yards and two touchdowns during his four Vikings seasons. He did finish the ’19 slate with a 20.4-yard average but did so on just nine catches.

The 6-foot-2, 215-pound Ole Miss product topped out at 4.63 seconds in the 40-yard dash four years ago and never solidified the No. 3 receiver role behind Adam Thielen and Stefon Diggs. He will have an opportunity to fill in behind another talented wideout duo.

Atlanta will have the high-end Julio Jones–Calvin Ridley tandem back for a third season together and saw Russell Gage eclipse 400 receiving yards last season. Treadwell will attempt to carve out a spot in the Falcons’ receiver group.
