Extra Points: Titans, Lions, Colts, Giants

As had been expected, Titans quarterback Marcus Mariota will be a gametime decision in Week 5, as Ian Rapoport of NFL.com tweets. Mariota is day-to-day with a strained hamstring, and backup Matt Cassel will start against the Dolphins if Mariota is unable to play. Tennessee signed veteran signal-caller Brandon Weeden earlier this week, passing over other free agent options such as Colin Kaepernick.

Here’s more from around the league:

  • The Lions haven’t decided whether they’ll activate defensive Armonty Bryant — who is returning from a four-game suspension — before Sunday’s contest against the Panthers, according to Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press. Detroit has a roster exemption for Bryant, and it must either add him to the 53-man roster or release by Monday. Given how thin they are along the defensive line (Kerry Hyder is out for the year, Khyri Thornton is still banned), Bryant seems likely to claim a roster spot by next week at the latest.
  • Before signing with the Bears’ practice squad on Friday, defensive end Howard Jones worked out for the Colts, tweets veteran NFL reporter Howard Balzer. Jones, 27, had drawn a good deal of interest since being non-tendered by the Buccaneers earlier this year, as he’d also met with the Titans and Jets. Still recovering from a torn ACL suffered in November of 2016, Jones wasn’t a major contributor in eight games last season before going down, but he did manage five sacks in a rotational role for Tampa Bay in 2015.
  • Speaking of workouts, the Giants auditioned a large group of free agents today, reports Jordan Raanan of ESPN.com. New York focused on front five as it worked out the following players: offensive linemen Kareem Are, Willie Beavers, Ethan Cooper, Kaleb Johnson, Cameron Jefferson, Storm Norton, Jeremiah Poutasi, Cyril Richardson, Kristjan Sokoli, and Zach Voytek, plus defensive tackle Greg Milhouse.
  • The Buccaneers will be without defensive end for two-to-four weeks Ryan Russell after he suffered a shoulder injury against the Patriots, per Rapoport (Twitter link). Russell, 25, has managed four tackles on 110 defensive snaps as a rotational end this season. If Tampa Bay is looking for depth, the club could potentially promote Channing Ward from its practice squad.

Sunday NFL Transactions: NFC South

Listed below are the Sunday roster moves for the four NFC South teams. Following the 53-man roster cutdown deadline yesterday, many teams will make slight tweaks to their rosters, claiming players off waivers or signing guys who clear waivers. Those transactions for the Falcons, Panthers, Saints, and Buccaneers are noted below.

Additionally, as of 12:00pm CT today, teams can begin constructing their 10-man practice squads. You can check out our glossary entry on practice squads to brush up on those changes, as well as all the other guidelines that govern the 10-man units, whose players practice with the team but aren’t eligible to suit up on Sundays.

Here are Sunday’s NFC South transactions, which will continue to be updated throughout the day:

Atlanta Falcons

Carolina Panthers

New Orleans Saints

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Saints Reach 53-Man Roster Limit

Every team had to get under the 53-man limit by Saturday’s deadline, but the Saints were the last to publicly announce their cuts. Here’s the full rundown of their moves:

Waived:

Released:

IR:

The Saints re-signed Cadet this offseason only to put him on the trade block in June. They didn’t find any takers then and they apparently couldn’t find any now. The Jets, who pursued him in free agency, could have interest in signing him.

Minor NFL Transactions: 7/25/17

Today’s minor moves:

  • The Saints have signed free agent Kristjan Sokoli, who will play as an offensive lineman, according to his agent Brett Tessler (Twitter link). Sokoli, a collegiate defender at Buffalo, was a 2010 draft choice of the Seahawks, who contemplated moving him to the offensive side of the ball. After playing only special teams for Seattle, Sokoli spent the 2016 season with the Colts (mostly on the practice squad) as a defensive end. In New Orleans, Sokoli will compete for a reserve interior line spot behind Andrus Peat and Larry Warford. The Saints have also signed cornerback Dejaun Butler, per the league’s transaction wire, and offensive lineman Martin Wallace, as his agent Paul Sheehy of ProStar Sports tweets.

Minor NFL Transactions: 6/15/17

Today’s minor moves:

Atlanta Falcons

Indianapolis Colts

Jacksonville Jaguars

Kansas City Chiefs

Los Angeles Rams

New Orleans Saints

Colts Place Arthur Jones On IR

Arthur Jones‘ season is over. The Colts announced that the defensive tackle has been placed on injured reserve. To take his spot, defensive end Kristjan Sokoli has been elevated from the practice squad to the 53-man roster. Arthur Jones (vertical)

This has been a strange year for Jones, to say the least. In March, Jones was on the Colts’ chopping block given his disappointing 2014 season and lost 2015 campaign. To keep his place on the team, he agreed to a significant pay cut. Then, Jones was banned for the first four games of the season after being hit with a suspension for PEDs.

Upon returning this year, Jones didn’t really deliver. In eight games, Jones tallied 30 total tackles. The advanced metrics at Pro Football Focus have him ranked as the No. 120 interior defender out of 126 qualified players. In short, Jones has regressed to the point where he is well below replacement level. It’s a good bet that the Colts will explore releasing him this spring.
