Jets To Sign LB Kevin Pierre-Louis

The Jets are finalizing a two-year, $6MM deal with linebacker Kevin Pierre-Louis, according to NFL Draft Diamonds (Twitter link). The signing has since been confirmed by Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News (Twitter links).

Pierre-Louis had essentially been a linebacker in name only until 2017, as special teams had been his primary area of focus. But the former fourth-round pick saw a career-high 25% playtime on defense, managing 25 tackles during that time. The Chiefs picked up KPL in a trade with the Seahawks last July that sent fellow ‘backer D.J. Alexanderto Seattle.

With the Jets, Pierre-Louis would likely revert to his natural special teams role. New York signed former Titan Avery Williamson on Wednesday, and plan to deploy him at inside linebacker alongside former first-round pick Darron Lee.

Before signing with New York, Pierre-Louis also took a visit with the Bears.

After meeting with the Jets on Thursday, linebacker Kevin Pierre-Louis has now also met with the Bears, ESPN’s Field Yates tweets.

Pierre-Louis had essentially been a linebacker in name only until 2017, as special teams had been his primary area of focus. But the former fourth-round pick saw a career-high 25% playtime on defense, managing 25 tackles during that time. The Chiefs picked up KPL in a trade with the Seahawks last July that sent fellow ‘backer D.J. Alexander to Seattle.

Moving for Pierre-Louis would be the latest in a busy Bears offseason. So far, the has signed the likes of Allen Robinson, Taylor Gabriel, Chase Daniel and Aaron Lynch.

Chiefs LB Kevin Pierre-Louis Arrested

Chiefs linebacker Kevin Pierre-Louis was arrested on Thursday night, according to Terez A. Paylor and Tony Rizzo of KansasCity.com. The 26-year-old was charged with “misdemeanor possession of marijuana, THC and drug paraphernalia, driving without a valid driver’s license and failure to display a valid license plate or current registration.”

Pierre-Louis appeared in Johnson County District Court on Friday and pleased not guilty to the various charges. He was subsequently released after posting a $2,500 bond.

The 2014 fourth-round pick out of Boston College spent the first three seasons of his career with the Seahawks. He was traded to the Chiefs last offseason in exchange for linebacker D.J. Alexander, and he proceeded to have the best season of his career. Pierre-Louis played in 14 games for Kansas City in 2017, compiling a career-high 41 tackles.

Chiefs Trade LB D.J. Alexander To Seahawks For LB Kevin Pierre-Louis

The Chiefs and Seahawks have agreed to a swap of linebackers, as Kansas City will send D.J. Alexander to the Seattle in exchange for Kevin Pierre-Louis, the Chiefs announced today.

Alexander, 25, was selected in the fifth round of the 2015 draft, and has primarily contributed on special teams thus far in his career. He’s appeared in all 32 games in two seasons with the Chiefs, but has just one start. Last year, he posted five tackles while playing 48 defensive snaps and 358 special teams snaps. Alexander earned a Pro Bowl nod in 2016, and was named as one of the league’s best special teamers by Pro Football Focus.

Pierre-Louis is a remarkably similar player to Alexander. Also 25 years old, Pierre-Louis was drafted one year earlier than Alexander, albeit in the fourth round. Like Alexander, he’s essentially a special teams-only player: in 2016, he played 71 defensive snaps and 227 special teams snaps. All told, Pierre-Louis racked up seven tackles.

The primary difference between Alexander and Pierre-Louis is team control. Alexander is signed for two more seasons, with base salaries below $800K in each year. Kansas City will only get Pierre-Louis through 2017, however. He’ll earn $690K next year.

Seahawks Void Deal With Louchiez Purifoy

MONDAY, 4:40pm: Seahawks coach Pete Carroll told reporters, including Bob Condotta of the Seattle Times (via Twitter) that Purifoy did not pass his physical. Seattle still has an open roster spot as a result.

FRIDAY, 8:25pm: A day after he was unexpectedly cut by the Colts, defensive back Loucheiz Purifoy has been claimed off waivers by the Seahawks, per Adam Caplan of ESPN.com (Twitter link). Bob Condotta of the Seattle Times tweets that the team placed linebacker Kevin Pierre-Louis on the injured reserve list to create an opening on the 53-man roster for Purifoy.

Purifoy, who will turn 22 in December, signed with the Colts in May as an undrafted free agent out of Florida, and had been a regular contributor on special teams for the club for most of the season. His release on Thanksgiving came as something of a surprise, leading to speculation that it was a non-football decision. However, presumably the Seahawks did their homework on the rookie defensive back and were comfortable bringing him aboard.

As for Pierre-Louis, the 2014 fourth-rounder played sparingly for the Seahawks this season, and had been sidelined since Week 11 with a shoulder injury. The move to IR ends his rookie year, but he remains under team control for several more years.

Minor Moves: Steelers, Dolphins, Seahawks

Here are a few of the latest transactions from around the league, including several draft pick signings, waiver claims, and cuts, plus a new contract for a player who was cut by his old team earlier this month:

Three teams parted ways with recently-signed undrafted free agents or players on reserve contracts, as the Steelers cut offensive lineman Kaycee Ike, the Dolphins dropped running back Cameron Marshall, and the Texans waived guard Kevin Forsch (all Twitter links via Aaron Wilson of the Baltimore Sun). The Packers also waived linebacker Victor Aiyewa, per Wilson (via Twitter).
Three players cut this week have been claimed off waivers, according to Wilson, who reports (in a series of three tweets) that tackle Michael Ola is headed to the Bears, defensive back Deion Belue was awarded to the Steelers, and receiver Kofi Hughes was claimed by the Texans.
A couple more updates from Wilson: Luke Marquardt is now on the 49ers‘ injured reserve list (Twitter link), while Garrett Scott has been placed on the Seahawks‘ non-football injury list (Twitter link).
Having been recently cut by the Seahawks, defensive back Jimmy Legree has signed with the Cardinals, tweets Joseph Person of the Charlotte Observer.

The Seahawks became the NFL’s fourth team to finishing locking up its 2014 draft class, announcing last night that fourth-round wide receiver Kevin Norwood and fourth-round linebacker Kevin Pierre-Louis have signed their rookie contracts. The Saints, Chiefs, and Bears were the first three clubs to sign all their draftees.
Sixth-round cornerback Brandon Dixon has inked his four-year rookie deal with the Jets, the team confirmed today in a press release. The 195th overall selection, Dixon is in line for a signing bonus worth about $103K an an overall four-year base value of around $2.324MM, per Jason Fitzgerald of Over The Cap. The former Northwest Missouri State speedster is the 10th of 12 Jets draft picks to sign his contract.
The Dolphins have signed former Buccaneers cornerback Anthony Gaitor, according to Omar Kelly of the South Florida Sun Sentinel. The appropriately named Gaitor, a seventh-round pick in 2011, remains in the state where he also played his college ball, at Florida International.

Draft Notes: Bridgewater, Seamster, Pierre-Louis

If Teddy Bridgewater slides into the second round or later (and if he can subsequently prove an injury or illness), he should collect $5MM in tax-free money, reports Darren Rovell of ESPN.com. Following this past college season, the Louisville quarterback added $5MM to his $10MM total disability injury policy while supplementing that with loss-of-value insurance worth $5MM.

Bridgewater purchased the policy for $20K when he was projected to be the number-three pick, and a source told Rovell that Bridgewater would start to collect if he falls out of the top 11. Rovell also adds that the difference between being picked third overall and 33rd overall (first pick of the second round) is about $15MM.

Middle Tennessee State cornerback Sammy Seamster met with the Jaguars and the Giants last week, reports Wilson. Seamster previously met with the Chiefs and Dolphins.
Linebacker Kevin Pierre-Louis visited the Giants, reports Wilson. The former Boston College Eagle finished last season with 108 tackles and six sacks.
Kansas State offensive tackle Cornelius Lucas auditioned for about half the NFL teams today, writes Wilson. Lucas was medically cleared two weeks ago after having sustained a foot injury. The Raiders were among the teams at his showcase today, and the Dolphins and Saints have already expressed interest.

North Notes: Lions, Ravens, Steelers

Jadeveon Clowney won’t be working out for any more NFL teams prior to the draft, as we heard this morning from Peter King, but that doesn’t mean he’s done making visits. According to Ian Rapoport of NFL.com (via Twitter), the Lions will be hosting Clowney for a visit soon. There’s obviously no chance the standout defensive end falls to Detroit at No. 10, so bringing in Clowney could be a further signal that the Lions are exploring moving up in the draft. The club has also been linked multiple times to wideout Sammy Watkins, who will almost certainly be off the board by No. 10 as well.

Notre Dame tight end Troy Niklas, who visited the Bills earlier in the month, recently met with the Ravens, writes Aaron Wilson of the Baltimore Sun. Wilson also tweets a couple more players who were in attendance at the Ravens’ local prospect day: Dexter McDougle (CB, Maryland) and Louis Young (CB, Georgia Tech).
TCU cornerback Jason Verrett, Arizona corner Shaquille Richardson and Oregon State defensive end Scott Crichton are visiting the Steelers today, tweets ESPN.com’s Scott Brown.
Matt Vensel of the Star Tribune takes a look at how the Vikings are spending their money by position, noting that the club is only among the top 10 NFL teams in spending at running back (first) and defensive end (ninth).

After hosting Kurt Coleman for a visit this week, the Vikings offered the free agent safety a contract, but it wasn’t enough to get him to pull the trigger, according to Ben Goessling of ESPN.com (via Twitter). Although the two sides may revisit talks at a later time, Coleman appears to still be exploring all his options.

The Vikings are conducting a private workout today with Eastern Illinois quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, tweets ESPN.com’s Adam Schefter.
We know the Lions have real interest in receiver Sammy Watkins, but apparently he’s not the only member of the family drawing attention from the club. Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press reports (via Twitter) that the Lions also had a private workout for Florida defensive back Jaylen Watkins, Sammy’s brother.
Ohio State cornerback Bradley Roby, Boston College linebacker Kevin Pierre-Louis, and Arizona State linebacker Carl Bradford are visiting the Steelers today, tweets Aaron Wilson of the Baltimore Sun.
The Ravens recently met with Virginia Tech signal-caller Logan Thomas, who has also met with the Bengals, according to Wilson. As Wilson details, in addition to those AFC North teams, Thomas has also worked out for or met with the Patriots, Cardinals, and Texans.
