Browns Down To 53

The Browns have officially cut down to a 53-man roster, according to a team announcement.

The team’s cuts include receivers Taylor Gabriel and Marlon Moore. Undrafted out of Abilene Christian in 2014, the 5-foot-8, 176-pound Gabriel appeared in 29 of a possible 32 regular-season games with the Browns and started four. He amassed 64 receptions for 862 yards and a touchdown during that time, with most of those numbers coming as a rookie. Gabriel caught 36 passes on 72 targets and averaged a prolific 17.1 yards per reception in his first year, but that figure fell to a paltry 8.6 on his 28 grabs in 2015.

Moore, a six-year veteran, previously saw action with the Dolphins and 49ers before joining the Browns last season. He pulled in only seven receptions in 14 games in Cleveland.

Today’s minor moves:

  • The Browns placed offensive lineman Michael Bowie on the reserved/retired list and signed undrafted defensive lineman Kenton Adeyemi (UConn) on Friday, per Nate Ulrich of Ohio.com. Bowie’s only on-field experience came in 2013, when he he appeared in nine games and started eight with Seattle.
  • The Chiefs have waived nose tackle Alameda Ta’amu and defensive back Shannon Edwards, reports Terez A. Paylor of the Kansas City Star (Twitter links).
  • The Broncos have waived center/guard Sam Brenner with an injury designation and signed undrafted free agent Mathu Gibson (Wingate University) to replace him, writes Cameron Wolfe of The Denver Post.
  • The Eagles have signed free agent wide receiver Deon Long, bringing their roster back to 90, Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer tweets.
  • The Steelers have signed free agent receiver Cobi Hamilton and waived fellow wideout Canaan Severin, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL.com (Twitter link) and Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com. They also made a pair of moves at tight end, signing free agent Michael Cooper and cutting Jake Phillips (via Mark Kaboly of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, on Twitter).
  • The Seahawks have signed free agent fullback Jonathan Amosa, tweets Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle.
  • The Colts have waived-injured tight end Darion Griswold, tweets Stephen Holder of the Indianapolis Star.

Minor NFL Transactions: 6/16/16

The Vikings waived linebacker Travis Lewis and defensive tackle Bruce Gaston, the club announced. Lewis was with Detroit from 2012 through 2015 before signing with Minnesota this offseason. He actually started four games last season, but for the most part he’s been a backup, appearing in 42 contests during his four-year career. Lewis was a key member of Detroit’s special teams unit, playing on more than 70% of Detroit’s ST snaps, and that’s the role he was expected to play in Minnesota. Instead, the Vikings will carry $50K in dead money on their 2016 salary cap as a result of having given Lewis a signing bonus.

  • Former fourth-round quarterback Logan Thomas has been waived by his second organization, as the Dolphins cut him loose earlier today, along with defensive tackle Charles Tuaau, Adam Beasley of the Miami Herald tweets. Thomas spent the 2014 season with the Cardinals before they too deemed Thomas too raw for the NFL.
  • The Jaguars signed punter Ryan Quigley and wide receiver Shane Wynn while waiving safety Craig Loston, cornerback Rashaad Reynolds, and defensive end Quanterus Smith, according to Michael DiRocco of ESPN.com (Twitter link). Quigley was on the Eagles’ offseason roster for a little over a month earlier this offseason.
  • The Bears are expected to sign defensive lineman Marquis Jackson, the twin brother of Malik Jackson, reports Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune (Twitter link). Chicago has also waived defensive lineman Kenton Adeyemi and linebacker Don Cherry, Jeff Dickerson of ESPN.com tweets.
  • After a tryout yesterday, the Chiefs have signed wide receiver Seantavius Jones, per Evan Woodbery of NOLA.com (Twitter link), adding that Kansas City also inked defensive Akeem Davis.
  • Defensive lineman James DeLoach has been cut by the Lions, according to Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press (Twitter link).
  • The Bengals have waived undrafted linebacker Gionni Paul, Paul Dehner Jr. of the Cincinnati Enquirer tweets.

We’ll round up the day’s minor moves here:

  • The Saints are signing undrafted rookie cornerback Jimmy Pruitt, according to the player’s agency (on Twitter). Pruitt, a four-year starter at San Jose State, racked up four interceptions over the course of his collegiate career.
  • The Bears agreed to sign defensive lineman Kenton Adeyemi and wide receiver Kieren Duncan, Adam Jahns of the Chicago Sun-Times tweets. Both players participated in the Bears’ weekend tryouts and both players are getting three-year pacts, per Brad Biggs of The Chicago Tribune (via Twitter).
  • Air Force tight end/long snapper Garrett Griffin has signed with the Saints, according to Aaron Wilson of The Houston Chronicle (via Twitter).

Earlier Updates:

  • After trying out for the club at this weekend’s rookie camp, former Duke tight end Braxton Deaver has signed with the Panthers, according to David Newton of ESPN.com. The 6’5”, 245-pound Deaver racked up 75 receptions and six touchdowns during his time with the Blue Devils, and he’ll now compete for time behind Greg Olsen, Ed Dickson, and 2016 seventh-rounder Beau Sandland.
  • The Saints have signed offensive lineman Tyrus Thompson, per a tweet from his agent Ken Sarnoff. Selected by the Vikings in the sixth round of the 2015 draft, Thompson, who can play both tackle positions, spent time on the practice squad rosters of both the Jaguars and Lions last season.
  • Carson Wentz is the most high-profile North Dakota State player to land on an NFL roster this offseason, but he won’t be the only one, as former Bison punter Ben LeCompte announced (Twitter link) that he’s agreed to terms with the Bears after working at the team’s rookie camp over the weekend.
