Dolphins Cut Roster To 53

The Miami Dolphins are the latest team to cut their roster all the way down to the required 53 players. Here are their latest moves:

Overall, not too many surprises. It looks like the Dolphins will be keeping three quarterbacks, with both Brock Osweiler and David Fales making the team.

Dolphins To Sign DT Kendall Langford

The Dolphins have agreed to sign defensive tackle Kendall Langford, according to a source who spoke with Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald (on Twitter). Terms of the deal are not yet known, but it’s likely a one-year deal with little or no guarantees. 

Langford, 32, entered the league as a third-round pick of the Dolphins in 2008 and spent the first four years of his career in Miami. Since then, he’s also had stints with the Rams (three seasons), Colts (two seasons), and the Texans (one game in 2017).

Langford offers a wealth of NFL experience, as he’s appeared in 136 games (113 starts) during his pro career. Unfortunately, it has been a while since he’s made a major impact on the field. In 2016, Langford lasted just seven games before the Colts placed him on injured reserve with a knee injury. Then, last year, the Texans signed him after both J.J. Watt and Whitney Mercilus suffered season-ending injuries, but his time in Houston was very short-lived.

Still, Langford was a productive NFL starter as recently as 2015. In that season with the Colts, he tallied a career-high seven sacks and 38 total tackles. He’ll look to get back to his old form as a reserve with the Dolphins, if he can make the cut as a reserve behind projected starters Akeem Spence and Davon Godchaux.

Texans Cut Matt McGloin, Add Josh Johnson

The Texans announced that they have waived quarterback Matt McGloin. To take his place, they have replaced him with fellow QB Josh Johnson. In a related move, the Texans have also released defensive lineman Kendall Langford. Josh Johnson (vertical)

McGloin was signed shortly after starting quarterback Deshaun Watson went down with an ACL tear. However, it was T.J. Yates – signed the day after McGloin – who dressed as Tom Savage‘s backup over the weekend.

All indications are that Savage will continue as the Texans’ starter, even after Houston’s 20-14 defeat at the hands of the Colts. Johnson may or may not get the nod over Yates as the primary backup.

Johnson has not played in a regular season NFL game since 2013. Since then, he has signed 13 contracts with eight different teams, as Tom Pelissero of NFL.com (on Twitter) notes.

The Texans are also expected to activate tight end C.J. Fiedorowicz from injured reserve this week, so the release of Langford could make room for him on the 53-man roster.

Texans To Sign DL Kendall Langford

After losing both J.J. Watt and Whitney Mercilus to season-ending injuries in Week 5, Houston had widened its search for defensive front reinforcements in recent days. Veteran edge defenders Lamarr Houston and Tyson Jackson were in town for workouts today, while the Texans also looked at linebacker Jayrone Elliott, reports Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle.

No freely available player — including Langford — is going to replace Watt or Mercilus, who are arguably Houston’s best pass rushers. But Langford, who at 6’5″, 275 pounds should be able to play at both end and tackle in the Texans’ 3-4 scheme, will be able to add depth and experience to a defensive unit that ranked fourth in DVOA heading into Week 5.

Langford, 31, offers a wealth of NFL history, as he’s appeared in 135 games (113 starts) during his nine-year pro career. In 2016, Langford lasted just seven games before the Colts placed him on injured reserve with a knee injury that had bothered him since a 2015 arthroscopic operation. All told, Langford played 301 snaps and tallied 10 tackles. Notably, he failed to register a sack for just the second time in his and the first time since 2011.

Along with the Colts, Langford has also suited up for Miami (2008-11) and St. Louis (2012-14). He’s been employed this season, as well, as he bounced on-and-off the Saints’ roster but never actually appeared in a game for New Orleans.

Jets Work Out Kendall Langford

The Jets worked out free agent defensive end Kendall Langford on Wednesday, according to Rich Cimini of ESPN.com (on Twitter). The 31-year-old has been yo-yo’d on and off of the Saints roster. The 31-year-old could be a contingency option for the Jets if help is needed on the defensive line. It’s not immediately clear if they are considering signing him right away, but it stands to reason that they will wait since they still need to free up room for the return of Jalin Marshall.

Langford spent the past two seasons with the Colts before being released in August. Before that, he was with the Dolphins and Rams. He had perfect attendance through eight seasons before he was slowed by injuries in 2016.

Langford had one of the best seasons in his career in ’15 as he registered 38 tackles and seven sacks. He might not be capable of that production any longer, but he could be a quality depth addition for the 2-2 Jets.

Saints Re-Sign DL Kendall Langford

Langford, 31, had a short stint with New Orleans last week, as he signed with the club on Thursday before being cut on Saturday. Clearly, his release was part of some sort of Saints roster shuffle, as the team wanted him back as soon as possible. A nine-year NFL veteran, Langford spent the past two seasons with the Colts before being released in August. Aside from the Saints, the only club to have expressed interest in Langford over the past month was the 49ers.

New Orleans is coming off its best defensive performance of the 2017 campaign, as it held Cam Newton and the Panthers to juset 13 points and 362 total yards. But the Saints could still use extra depth on the defensive side of the ball, as the unit ranked 31st in DVOA heading into Week 3. Langford, who can play both end and tackle, will help make up for the loss of fellow defenders Nick Fairley and Mitchell Loewen, both of whom are out for the year.

Saints Cut Kendall Langford, Darryl Tapp

Two days after signing him, the Saints made the decision to cut Kendall Langford to make room for players they presumably believe will be of greater use to them on Sunday. New Orleans also cut defensive end Darryl Tapp, Field Yates of ESPN.com tweets.

A 10th-year veteran, Langford signed a one-year deal with the Saints on Thursday. He’d been a starter in all but one season, but the 31-year-old defensive lineman will venture back into free agency. Being a vested veteran, Tapp will as well.

The Saints cut the defensive line duo to sign defensive backs Justin Hardee and Arthur Maulet, Yates reports. New Orleans has encountered a cornerback shortage, with Marshon Lattimore and Sterling Moore deemed out for Week 3. With Delvin Breaux on IR, the team has made moves to enhance its skeleton crew in advance of Sunday’s game against the Panthers.

Langford spent the past two seasons with the Colts but also served as a starter for the Rams and Dolphins. Tapp suited up in all 16 Saints games last season, starting two. It’s possible the team could look to re-sign the pair after its cornerback situation clears up.

Hardee signed with New Orleans’ practice squad on Friday, doing so after the Texans cut him after the preseason concluded. The Saints signed Maulet as a UDFA in May and added him to their practice squad before the regular season.

Saints To Sign DL Kendall Langford

Langford, 31, spent the last two seasons with the Colts and was slated for a third until he was released in August. Unfortunately, he has been plagued by knee problems in recent years. He underwent arthroscopic surgery after the 2015 season and lasted only seven games last year before landing on injured reserve. All in all, he played in 301 snaps in 2016 made only ten tackles. He also had zero sacks – a major drop off from his 7.0 sacks in the previous year.

If he’s healthy, Langford can be a difference maker for the Saints. That’s what the Saints – who rank in the bottom two of defensive DVOA through two games – are hoping for.
