Seahawks To Sign Keenan Reynolds

The Seahawks are signing former Navy wide receiver/return man Keenan Reynolds, a source tells Ian Rapoport of NFL.com (on Twitter). Reynolds was selected in the sixth-round of the 2016 draft by the Ravens, but has yet to see the field in a regular season game. 

The Ravens kept Reynolds on the practice squad for much of the 2016 season but released him prior to the final cuts last year. In November, he hooked on with the Redskins’ taxi squad but was not retained with a futures contract.

Reynolds was a standout quarterback at Navy, but NFL clubs have viewed him as a wide receiver/kick returner in the past. Presumably, that’s how the Seahawks intend on using him if he makes the squad.

Reynolds finished fifth in Heisman voting in 2015 as he ran for 1,373 yards. Reynolds cleared 1,100 yards rushing in three of his collegiate seasons and averaged 4.7 yards per tote across four years. As a senior, he averaged 5.2 yards per carry.

The emergence of Reynolds prompted the Department of Defense to change its rules regarding the eligibility of its graduates in professional sports. However, the academies reverted back to the old rules in 2017.

Ravens Cut 18 Players

The Ravens made some major strides towards getting under the 53-man limit. On Friday, they announced 24 roster moves, including the release of 18 players. Here’s the full rundown:

Department Of Defense Changes Policy

Last summer, the Department of Defense changed its rules to allow graduates going into professional sports to fulfill their requirements in the reserves rather than active duty. Now, the DoD has changed its mind. Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis signed an order to rescind the pro sports policy, meaning that athletes will be required to fulfill their active duty requirement before joining a professional sports team (link via Nicki Jhabvala of The Denver Post). This year, the rule change burned Air Force wide receiver Jalen Robinette. Robinette had a chance of being taken in the late rounds on Saturday, but the Air Force disclosed just prior to the draft that its athletes would have to serve in active duty. The rule change does not apply retroactively to Ravens wide receiver Keenan Reynolds, however (Twitter link via PFT).

The DoD’s flip-flop may hurt the ability of the service academies to recruit high-level football players going forward.

Minor NFL Transactions: 4/26/17

The latest minor moves from around the NFL:

  • The Jets have waived running back Brandon Burks, wide receiver Darius Jennings, long snapper Josh Latham, linebacker Jeff Luc and defensive lineman Julien Obioha, per a team announcement. Jennings is the most experienced member of the group, but even he has just four NFL games under his belt (with Cleveland in 2015). During that stretch, he caught 14 passes on 21 attempts and totaled 171 yards.
  • The Falcons have waived defensive tackle Jimmy Staten, a Georgia native who has spent time with six organizations since the Seahawks used a fifth-round pick on him in 2014. Staten, who hasn’t seen any regular-season action to this point, joined the Falcons’ practice squad in January.
  • The Cowboys have signed Australian punter Sam Irwin-Hill, according to Charean Williams of the Star-Telegram (Twitter link). Irwin-Hill went undrafted out of Arkansas in 2014.
  • Three of the Ravens’ exclusive rights free agents – receiver Keenan Reynolds, offensive lineman De’Ondre Wesley and linebacker Brennen Beyer – have signed their tenders, tweets Jeff Zrebiec of the Baltimore Sun.

Ravens Place Jimmy Smith On IR, Promote Keenan Reynolds

Jimmy Smith‘s season is over. Ravens coach John Harbaugh announced earlier this week that the cornerback wouldn’t play this weekend, and Ryan Mink of BaltimoreRavens.com reports that the team has placed the veteran Jimmy Smithon the injured reserve. Wideout Keenan Reynolds has been promoted from the practice squad to take Smith’s roster spot.

Smith suffered a high-ankle sprain during his team’s mid-December matchup against the Patriots, and he hasn’t taken the field since that time. In 11 games this season, the 28-year-old compiled 32 tackles and four passes defended. The defensive back joined the Ravens as a first-round pick in 2011, and he’s started each of his 51 games over the past four seasons. The team inked Smith to a four-year, $48MM extension ($21MM guaranteed) in 2015, and the two sides restructured that contract last offseason.

Reynolds, a former standout quarterback at Navy, was taken in the sixth-round of this past year’s draft. The rookie has spent the entire season on the practice squad as he’s made his transition to receiver, and the organization is rewarding the player for “a year of hard work.”

Keenan ReynoldsReynolds is expected to make his NFL debut this weekend, and the organization is considering the contest “a one-game audition for next year.” The rookie struggled during camp and the preseason, recording a number of drops at receiver and as a return man. As a result, the rookie landed on the practice squad.

“It’s been a great challenge, but also an opportunity for me to get a lot better,” Reynolds said. “I feel like a wide receiver now. My arm hurts if I throw too much.”

The former quarterback ran for 88 rushing touchdowns during his four-year collegiate career, the most in NCAA FBS history. Reynolds also threw for 4,001 yards, 31 touchdowns, and eight interceptions.

Sunday NFL Transactions: AFC North

Listed below are the Sunday roster moves for the four AFC North teams. Following the 53-man roster cutdown deadline yesterday, many teams will make slight tweaks to their rosters, claiming players off waivers or signing guys who clear waivers. Those transactions for the Ravens, Bengals, Browns, and Steelers are noted below.

Ravens Get Roster To 53

The Ravens have announced the moves that take their roster to 53:

Placed On IR:

Lewis-Moore, the Ravens’ sixth-round pick out of Notre Dame in 2013, had a tough beginning to his professional career, landing on IR in each of his first two seasons with the club. He finally made cracked the 53-man roster last year, appearing in five games for the Ravens. Baltimore has always liked his upside as a pass rusher, but he found himself squeezed out of a deep defensive line group this season.

Cutting Brooks was a bit of a surprise, as the former third-rounder was playing well early in the preseason. There was some optimism that Brooks would be able to leapfrog former first-rounder Matt Elam on the depth chart, but the 25-year-old was unable to carve out a role during his two years (plus preseason) on the team.

Ravens To Waive Keenan Reynolds

The Ravens are going to waive rookie receiver Keenan Reynolds, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL.com (Twitter link). Baltimore telegraphed the move by working out receiver/returner Devin Hester earlier Friday, Rapoport notes.

Reynolds, an ex-Navy standout, went in the sixth round of this year’s draft after a standout career as a dual-threat college quarterback. Reynolds is obligated to serve in the military as per his agreement with the Naval Academy, but Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter gave him special clearance after the draft to defer his service. However, Reynolds was unable to do enough in Baltimore to land a roster spot.
