Kedric Golston

49ers Audition DT Kedric Golston

The 49ers worked out veteran free agent defensive tackle Kedric Golston, according to a source who spoke with Aaron Wilson of The Houston Chronicle (on Twitter). This marks Golston’s first known audition of the offseason.

Golston, a sixth-round pick of the Redskins in 2006, wound up spending eleven seasons in D.C. Unfortunately, his 2016 season ended after two games when he suffered a season-ending hamstring injury. Over the course of his Redskins career, Golston appeared in a total of 142 regular season games with 53 starts.

Throughout his career, Golston has alternated between defensive tackle and defensive end. In 2016, before his unfortunate injury, the plan was for Golston to be a run-stuffing nose tackle. It’s not clear where the Niners would use him in their 4-3 set, but as he approaches his 34th birthday, he might not have the speed to play as an edge defender.

The Niners seem to be exploring veteran defensive line options this week. On Thursday, SF took a look at former University of Texas standout Cedric Reed.

Redskins Place Kedric Golston On IR

Kedric Golston is done for the year, Redskins coach Jay Gruden told reporters (Twitter link via Mike Jones of The Washington Post). In a related move, rookie defensive tackle Matt Ioannidis will be called up from the practice squad. Kedric Golston (vertical)

Golston signed a one-year, $1MM deal with the Redskins this offseason. Unfortunately, the nose tackle’s season is already over after he went down with a strained hamstring on the first play of Sunday’s game against Cowboys. The Redskins will now rely on Ziggy Hood as their primary nose tackle, though the Redskins other options for depth.

Over the last ten years for the Redskins, Golston has appeared in 142 games with 53 starts. Ioannidis, a Temple product, was selected in the fifth round of this year’s draft. It was a surprise to many when he didn’t make the 53-man roster, but he passed through waivers and the Redskins were able to re-sign him to the taxi squad. We’ll find out now how NFL-ready Ioannidis is.

McCoy, of course, will serve as the backup to Kirk Cousins in 2016. McCoy’s deal is for three years, but can void to two, a source tells John Keim of ESPN.com (on Twitter). The new pact gives him a little more security than he had on his last deal."<strong

For his career, McCoy has appeared in 34 games while making 25 starts for the Browns, 49ers, and Washington. Over the last two years with Washington, the Texas product has taken the field six times and started four games, all of which came in 2014. Late last month, head coach Jay Gruden indicated that he wanted to keep McCoy, and Washington got it done today.

In other Washington news, the club has reached a new deal with nose tackle Kedric Golston, Aaron Wilson of The Houston Chronicle tweets. The deal will be worth $1MM with a $985K base. He’ll get a $20K irst game roster bonus with up to $60K in incentives that are tied to playing time.

Redskins Notes: Jackson, Hocker, Minnifield

Rumors of gang connections surrounded DeSean Jackson following his release from the Eagles. The current Redskins wideout previously distanced himself from the accusations, and Jackson again hushed the gossip in an interview with ESPN The Magazine’s Cord Jefferson.

Jackson said that he knows people in gangs, but has never been affiliated. Furthermore, the alleged gang signals the wideout has displayed in games were purely shoutouts to his friends.

“If I score a touchdown or make a play and my boys at home can see me throwing up the area we’re from, that’s me showing them love,” Jackson said. “They weren’t fortunate enough to make it where I’m at. All my friends wanted to be in the NFL growing up, but they weren’t able to do that, and I was. That doesn’t mean I forgot about them. They’re my boys, I grew up with them, and I’m going to give them love.”

Gayle Jackson, DeSean’s mother, weighed in on the outside influences.

“Those guys gravitated toward him because he had structure in his life,” she said. “A lot of time I was trying to chase these cats away. I told him it would catch up with him and that people don’t understand, so he should leave those guys alone. He told me, ‘Mom, you can’t treat people like that.'”

Let’s check out some more Redskins notes, all via the mailbag of ESPN.com’s John Keim

  • If the Redskins decide to roll the dice with rookie kicker Zach Hocker, Keim believes it will be a gamble. However, Hocker’s main opponent, Kai Forbath, had never attempted a kick in the NFL prior to signing with the team in 2012.
  • Keim says Chase Minnifield‘s chances of making the Redskins will come down to whether the team decides to keep six cornerbacks. Of course, injuries could help his chances. Reversely, the presence of Richard Crawford could hurt those chances.
  • In regards to backups on the offensive line, Keim sides with Mike McGlynnMorgan MosesSpencer Long and Josh LeRibeus. If the team carries an additional lineman, Tom Compton could also make the roster.
  • Assuming the defensive line starters are Chris BakerBarry Cofield and Jason Hatcher, Keim chooses Jarvis JenkinsStephen Bowen and Kedric Golston as the three backups.
