Raiders End Punting Competition

The Raiders’ punter competition is over. On Tuesday, the Raiders waived Johnny Townsend, which effectively anoints undrafted rookie A.J. Cole as the team’s punter moving forward.

The Raiders used a fifth-round pick to select Townsend last year, but he didn’t do much in his rookie season or training camp this summer. Cole, meanwhile, managed to put two punts inside the 20 against the Rams on Saturday. Quickly, Cole earned a fan in head coach Jon Gruden.

[Cole] put on an orbital display the other day against the Rams [in joint practices last week],” Raiders head coach Jon Gruden said Saturday night (via Scott Bair of NBC Sports). “We haven’t seen kicks like that since [Shane] Lechler was here or [Marquette] King. He has a live leg and it looks like he can directional punt and hold, so Townsend has his hands full.”

In related moves, cornerback Hamp Cheevers was waived. Meanwhile, the club signed defensive backs Makinton Dorleant and Joshua Holsey.

Redskins Waive Kapri Bibbs, Make Several Other Moves

The Redskins are still alive in the NFC playoff race, but their hopes are dwindling fast as they’ve dealt with an onslaught of injuries. Now on the eve of their must win game against the Jaguars, Washington is shuffling the bottom of their roster.

The team waived running back Kapri Bibbs and defensive end Marcus Smith, and promoted tight end Matt Flanagan and defensive back Joshua Holsey from the practice squad to take their spots on the roster, the team announced via Twitter. They also placed long snapper Nick Sundberg on injured reserve, and signed long snapper Andrew East to replace him.

Bibbs has actually received some pretty significant playing time at times over the past two seasons, so his release is a bit of a surprise. This year he had carried 20 times for 101 yards and three touchdowns, and caught 13 passes for 102 yards and another touchdown. Smith, a first round pick of the Eagles back in 2014, just was signed a couple of weeks ago.

Flanagan is an undrafted rookie from Pitt who is primarily a blocking tight end, and Holsey was a seventh round pick of the Redskins in 2017. Flanagan was likely promoted because starting tight end Jordan Reed is going to miss some time with a toe injury. If the Redskins lose to Jacksonville and fall out of playoff contention, it’s quite possible both youngsters receive some run down the stretch.

Redskins Activate CB Joshua Holsey

The Redskins activated cornerback Joshua Holsey, per a club announcement. Holsey began the season on the non-football injury list, but is finally healthy enough to get back on the field.

Holsey was parked on NFI during training camp when a table landed on his foot. The timing was unfortunate as Holsey figured to see a larger role in the defense following the Kendall Fuller trade.

As a rookie in 2017, Holsey played mostly on special teams and appeared in 12 games. This year, he figures to see special teams work once again, though he may see an uptick in snaps as well. He joins a cornerback depth chart that includes Josh Norman, Quinton Dunbar, Fabian Moreau, sixth-round pick Greg Stroman, UDFA Danny Johnson, and supplemental draft pick Adonis Alexander.

In a corresponding move, the Redskins formally placed offensive lineman Geron Christian on IR.

Patriots’ Duke Dawson Returns To Practice

A host of players began practice after being designated on IR or another off-roster list by their respective teams. The Chiefs could soon see Daniel Sorensen back in action, and the AFC’s other top contender through seven games may have the services of a secondary cog as well.

Duke Dawson returned to Patriots practice on Wednesday, veteran NFL reporter Howard Balzer tweets. The Patriots selected Dawson in the second round this year but placed him on IR due to a hamstring injury that appears to be healed to the point the former Florida Gator can practice.

The rookie was in the mix to become New England’s slot cornerback early in camp but now may be back as depth for the Pats’ defensive third level. Jonathan Jones has served as the Pats’ slot defender this season. Five corners — including rookie seventh-rounder Keion Crossen and rookie UDFA J.C. Jackson — and now-hybrid performer Jason McCourty reside on New England’s active roster.

One of the Colts’ second-round picks this year, defensive lineman Tyquan Lewis, returned to practice as well, Balzer adds. A foot injury sent Lewis to IR. He was one of four second-round picks the Colts made in April.

Also back at practice are Jets safety Rontez Miles, who was on the team’s PUP list, and Redskins cornerback Joshua Holsey, whom the team previously placed on its NFI list.
