Jaguars Cut Josh Lambo

The Jaguars have released Josh Lambo. The kicking job now belongs to Matthew Wright, who sank two 50+ yard field goals to top the Dolphins on Sunday.

In 2019, Lambo led the NFL with a 97.1% field goal conversion rate. Then, in 2020, he lost the bulk of the year to injury, but went 5-of-5 on his FG tries while making 8-of-10 extra point attempts. This year, he went 0-3 and 5-of-7 on XPs, leading the Jaguars to promote Wright from the taxi squad.

Previously, Lambo was set to play out his four-year, $15MM deal, which would have run through 2022. The early termination will leave the Jaguars with a few million in dead money but may help them avoid finishing in the league’s cellar for a second straight year.

The Jaguars are now one of three one-win teams in the NFL, alongside the Texans, Dolphins, and Giants. They’ll aim for their first winning streak on Halloween when they face the Seahawks in Seattle.

Jaguars’ Josh Lambo Done For Year?

Jaguars kicker Josh Lambo aggravated his gluteus medius muscle during Sunday’s game, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL.com (on Twitter). It’s a worse version of the injury that caused him to miss a month earlier this year and he’ll head to the injured reserve list to recuperate. The expectation is that this will end his season early.

Lambo suffered the strain during the final kick of the game, a late onside kick attempt. On the plus side, Lambo set a new personal watermark with his 59-yard field goal, which now stands as the longest in Jaguars franchise history. Remarkably, that was his seventh straight connection on tries from 50 yards or longer.

The Jaguars went through a series of kickers after Lambo’s early fall hiatus. Collectively, Aldrick Rosas, Stephen Hauschka, Brandon Wright, and Jon Brown went 5-9 on field goal tries. They’ll have to try a new leg with Lambo — one of the league’s most reliable and accurate kickers — out of the picture.

In his injury-shortened 2020, the soon-to-be 30-year-old has made all five of his field goal attempts while going 8-of-10 on extra point tries. Last year, Lambo led the NFL with a 97.1% field goal conversion rate. He still has two full seasons left on his four-year, $15MM deal, tying him to the Jaguars through 2022.

Jaguars Activate K Josh Lambo From IR

The Jaguars have used five kickers this season, shuffling through four in the past four weeks after Josh Lambo‘s injury. Good news for potential Jacksonville kicker stability. Lambo is back on the team’s active roster.

A hip injury sidelined Lambo after Week 2, leading the Jags on a wild ride of specialists. They used Brandon Wright in Week 3, Aldrick Rosas in Week 4, Stephen Hauschka in Week 5 and Jonathan Brown in Week 6. Lambo will replace Brown, whom the Jags cut to make room for their full-time kicker.

Brown, the Jags’ kicker since the 2017 season, will return ahead of Sunday’s game against his former team. Brown was the Chargers’ kicker from 2015-16.

The team made a few other transactions, including releasing defensive lineman Josh Mauro. While Mauro did not play a down for the Jaguars after signing with the team this offseason, the veteran had an eventful tenure. The former Cardinals, Giants and Raiders D-lineman received a five-game PED ban and landed on the Jags’ reserve/COVID-19 list.

Jacksonville also placed nose tackle Abry Jones on IR. The longest-tenured Jaguar, Jones missed Week 6 with an ankle injury. He has been with the team since the 2013 season, when he landed in north Florida as a UDFA. Jones, 29, has made 52 starts and played in 105 games with the Jaguars.

The Jags promoted tight end Ben Ellefson from their practice squad to take Jones’ place on the 53-man roster.

Jaguars To Place K Josh Lambo On IR

The Jaguars will need a fill-in kicker for the foreseeable future. They are placing Josh Lambo on IR, Doug Marrone said Wednesday. Lambo will miss at least three games due to a hip injury.

The former Chargers kicker has been in place as the Jags’ field goal man since the 2017 season, when he replaced Jason Myers. Lambo has missed time due to an injury in the past, finishing the 2018 season on IR because of a groin injury. The Jags signed Kai Forbath that season.

Brandon Wright will kick for the Jags on Thursday against the Dolphins. The Jaguars signed Wright as a UDFA out of Georgia State this year and stashed him on their practice squad. This will be Wright’s first NFL action.

Jacksonville will also be without starting center Brandon Linder against the Dolphins. The team ruled Linder out with a knee injury he sustained against the Titans.

Jaguars, Josh Lambo Agree To Extension

The Jaguars signed Josh Lambo to a new four-year extension, according to a tweet from the kicker. Lambo was set for free agency in March, but the new deal could keep him in place through the 2022 season.

Lambo will receive $15.5MM over the four-year term, tweets Ian Rapoport of NFL.com, who adds Lambo will collect $6.5MM in full guarantees. That $3.875M annual average will tie for seventh among kickers, while Lambo’s guarantees also rank seventh at the position.

Lambo has been one of the Jaguars’ most consistent players over the past two seasons, and that was especially true in 2018 as the team faltered on the whole. Since joining Jacksonville in October 2017, Lambo has nailed 38 of 41 field goal tries and has missed only three PATs. During that run, the fantasy hero made a franchise-record 24 straight FG attempts (Nov. 19, 2017 to Nov. 11, 2018).

Lambo missed some time down the stretch of the 2018 season with a groin injury, but the new deal is an indication that those worries are behind him. Still in his prime, he’ll look to keep things going as he enters his age-29 season

Jaguars To Sign K Kai Forbath

Jaguars have signed free agent kicker Kai Forbath, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL.com (on Twitter). Forbath will serve as insurance for Josh Lambo, who is questionable for Sunday’s game with a groin injury.

Forbath has been busy lately. Earlier this week, he auditioned for the Steelers and was asked to stay overnight as the team mulled its options. Ultimately, the Steelers decided to stick it out with Chris Boswell, but Forbath quickly found a job after his audition with the Jaguars. Forbath worked out alongside fellow free agents Caleb Sturgis and Marshall Koehn, according to Rapoport, and had the best showing of the group.

Forbath, 31, spent part of 2016 and all of 2017 with the Vikings, but he was released in August after losing the kicking competition to Daniel Carlson. Forbath connected on 88.7% of his field goal tries in Minnesota, but his 84.9% extra point conversion rate left much to be desired.

If Lambo isn’t cleared in time, Forbath will have an opportunity to make his first kick of 2018 against the Redskins.

Jaguars Sign K Josh Lambo, Cut Jason Myers

The Jaguars have made a change at kicker. Jacksonville has signed Josh Lambo and released Jason Myers. Josh Lambo (Vertical)

Lambo, 26, spent the two seasons with the Chargers after first hooking on as an undrafted free agent. However, he lost the kicking battle to Younghoe Koo and wound up without a job in early September. During his time in San Diego, Lambo connected on 52 of 64 field goals and converted 70 of 78 extra points.

Lambo didn’t land a deal when he auditioned for the Jaguars back on September 15th, but they kept his number handy and gave him a ring one month later. He also showed his stuff for the Raiders, Eagles, Bears, and Buccaneers in recent weeks.

Myers missed two 54-year tries against the Rams on Sunday and that, apparently, was the final straw for him. He had four total missed field goal tries in 2017, but three of them were from 50 yards or more. He also missed two extra point attempts.
