AFC Notes: Jaguars, Patriots, Randall

The Jaguars will be without several players on Sunday against the Texans, Michael DiRocco of ESPN recaps on Twitter. S Ronnie Harrison is listed as questionable with an ankle injury. CB A.J. Bouye, WR Marqise Lee, DE Yannick Ngakoue and LT Cam Robinson have all already been ruled out of the contest.

Last week, Jacksonville lost starting QB Nick Foles, who suffered a broken left clavicle in Week 1 and has been placed on injured reserve. The franchise’s collective health has put a damper on what should have been a bounceback year for the Jags. As the team carries on in Houston, let’s take a look around the AFC:

  • The Patriots worked out several players ahead of their game against the Dolphins, a source tells Nick Underhill of The Athletic (Twitter link). OT Caleb Benenoch, NT Carl Davis, DT Willie Henry, DB Josh Jones and DB Adarius Pickett worked out for New England.
  • Browns S Damarious Randall has been ruled out of Monday’s game, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL.com (Twitter link). Randall showed up to Cleveland’s facility with a concussion and was placed in the concussion protocol.
  • A.J. Green, who injured his ankle during the Bengals‘ training camp, is out of his walking boot and feels like is he ahead of schedule in his recovery, as Tyler Dragon of the Cincinnati Enquirer relays. “I’m only six weeks out and I’m already walking,” Green said. “You never know what the next two weeks or three weeks are going to bring to where I can start back putting on shoes and actually running and doing some on the field stuff. You never know.”

Patriots Worked Out S Josh Jones

The Patriots recently gave a look at a former second-rounder. NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport reports (via Twitter) that New England recently worked out safety Josh Jones.

The NC State product was selected by the Packers late in the second round of the 2017 draft, but he struggled to establish himself in Green Bay. Jones started 12 of his 29 regular-season appearances, compiling 126 tackles, three sacks, and seven passes defended. Pro Football Focus ultimately ranked him 70th among 93 eligible safeties last season.

He was waived with a non-football illness designation in late August, and he’s been busy with workouts over the past few weeks. The 24-year-old has had reported auditions with the Bills, Vikings and Lions.

The Patriots safety depth chart seems pretty much set, with Devin McCourty, Patrick Chung, and Duron Harmon leading the way. New England did re-sign safety Obi Melifonwu to their practice squad earlier this week.

Josh Jones To Meet With Vikings, Lions

The Josh Jones free agency tour continues. The former Packers safety will meet with the Vikings tomorrow and will also sit down with the Lions next week, Rob Demovsky of ESPN.com tweets

The 2017 second-round draft pick started 12 games over his first two years in the league for the Packers, but he fell out of favor in 2018. The advanced stats at Pro Football Focus ranked him 70th among 93 eligible safeties.

Recently, Jones also met with the Bills. With a need for safety help across the league, Jones probably won’t be out of work for long.

Bills To Meet With Josh Jones

The Bills will meet with safety Josh Jones on Monday, Adam Schefter of ESPN.com reports (via Twitter). Jones skipped the Packers’ OTAs to force a trade and Green Bay more or less obliged by cutting him late last month.

The Packers selected Jones in the second round of the 2017 draft and started him 12 games over his first two years in the league. However, he took a step back last year. Jones finished out with 55 tackles, one sack, and two passes defensed in 13 games (five starts) in 2018. Pro Football Focus ended up ranking Jones 70th among 93 eligible safeties.

Jones washed out in Green Bay, but he profiles as a potential low-risk, high-reward pickup for the Bills.

Packers To Cut S Josh Jones

The Packers will be cutting safety Josh Jones today, as Adam Schefter of ESPN.com reports (via Twitter). Jones skipped the club’s OTAs in the spring with the hope of forcing a trade, and his wish to get out of Green Bay has finally been granted.

The Packers selected Jones in the second round of the 2017 draft, and he has started 12 games over his first two years in the league. He seemed to take a step back during his sophomore season, finishing with 55 tackles, one sack, and two passes defensed in 13 games (five starts) in 2018. Pro Football Focus ended up ranking Jones 70th among 93 eligible safeties.

Green Bay invested heavily in the safety position this offseason, as the team inked former Bears safety Adrian Amos to a four-year, $36MM deal in free agency and later traded up in the first round to select Maryland safety Darnell Savage Jr.. As Rob Demovsky of ESPN.com writes, Amos and Savage are expected to serve as the Packers’ starting safeties in 2019, and former UDFA Raven Greene has worked ahead of Jones both at safety and at inside linebacker in sub-packages during training camp.

Demovsky also notes that Jones has not practiced in nearly two weeks because of an undisclosed illness, and he got kicked out of practice on July 31 for a hit and a fight during a non-tackling period. Plus, even though the Packers traded Ha Ha Clinton-Dix halfway though last season, Jones was not elevated into the starting lineup until rookie Kentrell Brice suffered an ankle injury in Week 10.

Clearly, Jones’ stock had plummeted in Green Bay, though he should catch on with another club fairly quickly given his youth and draft pedigree.

Packers GM On Josh Jones Situation

Packers safety Josh Jones skipped OTAs in the hopes of forcing a trade out of Green Bay, but he did report to mandatory minicamp, which opened today, as Rob Demovsky of ESPN.com writes. However, Jones has not changed his mind about wanting out.

Jones said that he reported for mandatory minicamp because it’s mandatory (and he would be subject to fines if he skipped). He added, “I’m also a part of the Green Bay Packers, so that’s why I came.”

GM Brian Gutekunst said the 2017 second-rounder did not practice today because of a hamstring injury, but Demovsky speculates that the Packers simply don’t want to risk Jones getting hurt and jeopardizing their chances of trading or cutting him. Gutekunst added that what he decides to do with Jones will not be impacted by Jones’ wishes. Gutekunst said, “I think it’s more about what our team desire is, and right now we’re kind of working through that. But he’s a very talented player. He’s shown that on the field at the times. We’ll go along and see where it goes.”

Despite his status as a recent high draft choice, Jones has not yet emerged as a full-time starter. He started the team’s final four games last year, but that was primarily due to an injury sustained by Kentrell Brice. Jones finished the 2018 campaign with 55 tackles, one sack, and two passes defended in 13 games (five starts). Pro Football Focus ended up ranking Jones 70th among 93 eligible safeties.

The Packers invested heavily on the safety position this offseason. The team inked former Bears safety Adrian Amos to a four-year, $36MM deal, and later traded up in the first round of April’s draft to select Maryland safety Darnell Savage Jr..
