Texans’ Jordan Jenkins To Miss Time

Texans edge rusher Jordan Jenkins will be out for at least a little while (Twitter link via Aaron Wilson of SportsTalk 790). Jenkins has been diagnosed with a torn PCL, per head coach David Culley, which will rule him out for a minimum of two weeks. Surgery is also a possibility, and that would likely rule him out for the year. 

Jenkins, a former 2016 third-round pick of the Jets, joined up with the Texans in March. His two-year, $6MM deal will keep him under club control for 2022, though the Texans could cut him to save $3MM with just $500K in dead money.

Jenkins compiled 22.5 sacks in his previous five seasons with the Jets, including 15 sacks between the 2018 and 2019 seasons. He was also healthy for the most part, missing just eight games in that stretch. While he took a step back in 2020 with career-lows in tackles (32) and sacks (2), the Texans saw him as a cost-effective addition to their overhauled defense.

To date, Jenkins has logged eight games with the Texans as a reserve. All together, he’s recorded 17 tackles, 1.5 sacks, and three tackles for loss with Culley & Co.

While they’ve lost Jenkins for a bit, the Texans did manage to beat the Titans 22-13 on Sunday. Now stationed at 2-8, they’ll try for their first winning streak of the year against the Jets on Sunday.

Texans To Sign LB Jordan Jenkins

Jordan Jenkins is leaving the Jets. The free agent pass rusher is signing with the Texans, reports NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport (via Twitter). It’s a two-year, $6MM deal for Jenkins, and the veteran has the potential to earn up to $8MM.

The 2016 third-round pick had spent his entire five-year career with the Jets, missing only eight of the team’s games over that span. The veteran has compiled 22.5 sacks throughout his career, including 15 sacks between the 2018 and 2019 seasons.

He took a bit of a step back in 2020. Jenkins started all 12 of his appearances, but he finished with career-lows in tackles (32) and sacks (2). He also compiled six QB hits. The 26-year-old’s season ended on the injured reserve with a shoulder injury.

As Field Yates notes on Twitter, the Jets roster has seen a complete makeover under GM Joe Douglas. Safety Marcus Maye, the team’s second-round pick in 2017, is now New York’s longest-tenured player.

 

Jets Place LB Jordan Jenkins On IR

Dec. 18: Jenkins will undergo surgery to repair a torn labrum and dislocated shoulder, as Ian Rapoport of NFL.com reports (via Twitter). According to RapSheet, Jenkins actually sustained the injury in Week 3 but has tried to battle through it. That could certainly explain his underwhelming performance this year, but the good news for him is that he is expected to be full healthy by the start of free agency.

Dec. 16: The Jets re-signed Jordan Jenkins in March; the veteran pass rusher’s time with the team may be over. Gang Green moved Jenkins to IR Wednesday. He will miss the rest of the season.

A Mike Maccagnan-era draft choice, Jenkins returned via one-year, $3.75MM deal under new GM Joe Douglas. But Jenkins has not produced much in what is on pace to be the worst season in Jets history.

Jenkins will end this season with just two sacks and six QB hits in 12 games. This comes after the former third-round pick totaled 15 sacks between the 2018 and ’19 seasons. He missed New York’s Week 14 game against Seattle with a shoulder injury and will likely head into free agency on the heels of this early end to his season.

Whether the Jets opt to retain Jenkins again or not, they will enter yet another offseason with glaring needs on the edge. Jenkins and Tarell Basham (two sacks) are the only Jets edge players with more than one sack. The team has an extra first-round pick from the Jamal Adams trade, but Douglas may have to address this position in free agency and the draft.

Jets To Re-Sign Jordan Jenkins

The Jets have agreed to re-sign linebacker Jordan Jenkins to a one-year, $5MM deal, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL.com (Twitter link). Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News was the first to report a deal between Jenkins and New York was close (on Twitter).

Defensive coordinator Gregg Williams represents a key part of why Jenkins is interested in returning, tweets Mehta. Jenkins has led the Jets in sacks in each of the past two seasons, totaling 15 in that span.

Previously, both Mehta and SNY’s Ralph Vacchiano indicated the Jets and Jenkins were either far apart on terms or that the team had not made much of a push to re-sign the mid-level edge rusher. The Giants expressed interest in bringing Jenkins to MetLife Stadium’s other locker room, but the Jetswill take a step toward filling their annual need at outside linebacker with a Jenkins reunion. The team still has a need at this spot, but the late-blooming Jenkins will be a good start for Gang Green.

Despite being a near-full-time player in 2016-17, Jenkins totaled just 5.5 sacks in that span. The former third-round pick out of Georgia took a step forward over the final two years of his rookie contract, totaling 15 sacks and 28 QB hits. The 2020 season will be Jenkins’ age-26 campaign.

AFC East Notes: Jets, Gordon, Lawson

Devoting significant resources to retooling their offensive line, the Jets have not address their edge defender situation. Jordan Jenkins remains a free agent, but the team has not made a strong effort to re-sign their sack leader of the past two years, Ralph Vacchiano of SNY notes. As far as the bigger names out there, the Jets are still not prepared to pay up for Jadeveon Clowney and do not have Yannick Ngakoue on the front burner, Rich Cimini of ESPN.com writes. The Jets have explored an Ngakoue tag-and-trade move but are not planning to pursue the disgruntled Jaguars defensive end, Cimini adds. Gang Green will need to make multiple moves outside, however. Tarell Basham resides as the top edge rusher on the Jets roster; he registered two sacks last season.

Here is the latest from the AFC East:

  • The Bills may or may not have expressed interest in Melvin Gordon. While 9News’ Mike Klis tweets that the Bills submitted an offer better than the Broncos’ two-year, $16MM proposal, ESPN.com’s Adam Schefter indicated Buffalo did not do so (Twitter link). Regardless of whether an offer emerged, Schefter adds (via Twitter) Gordon’s agent did contact the Bills about a deal. The Bills are all set to go with Devin Singletary again; Frank Gore is a free agent.
  • George Fant‘s three-year, $27.3MM Jets deal essentially doubles as a one-year, $9.25MM investment, Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News notes. If the veteran tackle is still on the Jets’ roster by Day 5 of the 2021 league year, $4.45MM of his $8MM 2021 base salary becomes guaranteed, per OverTheCap. This still represents a nice deal for Fant, whom Mehta adds was only targeting $6MM per year before the Jets swooped in with their offer.
  • Shaq Lawson signed a three-year, $30MM Dolphins deal. While many teams prefer to backload free agency contracts, the Dolphins set Lawson’s up so he has a $10.3MM 2020 cap number, Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald notes. Miami did this in order to lessen Lawson’s 2021 and ’22 cap hits, which OverTheCap lists as $9.3MM (’21) and $10.3MM (’22) figures.

Giants Interested In OLB Jordan Jenkins

Shortly after franchise-tagging ex-Jets defensive lineman Leonard Williams, the Giants have emerged as a suitor for longtime Williams teammate Jordan Jenkins.

The Giants are indeed interested in Jenkins, according to Paul Schwartz of the New York Post (on Twitter). Jenkins has spent his entire career with the Jets, becoming their top edge rusher over the past two seasons.

Jenkins, 25, has posted 15 sacks over the past two seasons. While the Jets tried to acquire higher-profile outside linebackers during that time — namely Khalil Mack and Anthony Barr — they turned to Jenkins as their top sack artist.

Big Blue has been linked to Jadeveon Clowney while also being skittish about the price tag the former No. 1 overall pick will carry. Jenkins would be a more cost-efficient option, but the Giants also may lose top incumbent pass rusher Markus Golden. So, they feature multiple needs at outside linebacker.

AFC East Notes: Brady, Jenkins, Lotulelei

Patriots QB Tom Brady will play against the Cowboys this afternoon, but as Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network (video link) notes, the team will need to closely monitor Brady’s elbow moving forward. Brady was unable to finish practice on Friday due to elbow pain, and while he was able to take all necessary reps on Saturday, he will continue to get work on the elbow as the season goes on.

Now for more from the AFC East:

  • It’s not unusual for teams to distance themselves from certain prospects in the pre-draft process in order to hide their interest in those prospects, and that’s exactly what the Patriots did with punter Jake Bailey, as Mike Reiss of ESPN.com writes. New England neither interviewed nor held a workout with Bailey, but it traded up in the fifth round of this year’s draft to select him. That move paid off, as the rookie specialist has two AFC Special Teams Player of the Week nods and is currently a favorite for the Pro Bowl.
  • Rich Cimini of ESPN.com expects the Jets to make a concerted effort to re-sign linebacker Jordan Jenkins this offseason. Jenkins, who will be eligible for unrestricted free agency for the first time, has steadily improved during his first four years in the league, and despite missing two games this season with a calf injury, he has posted five sacks, just two shy of his career-high of seven (which he set last year). Jenkins will likely command a contract paying him over $10MM per year.
  • The Jets will have a lot of positions to address this offseason, but tight end isn’t one of them. As Cimini tweets, the club appears set at TE with Ryan Griffin — who agreed to a three-year extension on Saturday — Chris Herndon, and improving rookie Trevon Wesco.
  • Bills fans have been less than impressed with the performances of front-seven defenders Star Lotulelei and Trent Murphy, but Joe Buscaglia of The Athletic says (via Twitter) that Lotulelei will definitely be back with the team next year (the Bills could save $10.1MM against the 2020 cap by cutting Lotulelei after the season, but they would also take on a $7.8MM dead cap charge). Murphy’s status is a bit tougher to predict, but if the Bills move on from Shaq Lawson, Murphy is likely to be back for the final year of his contract.

Injury Notes: 9/20/19

Here are the latest significant injury-related notes from around the league:

  • Marshall Newhouse, whom the Patriots signed last week, will serve as the club’s starting left tackle until Isaiah Wynn returns, per Doug Kyed of NESN.com (via Twitter).
  • As expected, Eagles wide receiver DeSean Jackson will not play in Week 3, but the club is still optimistic about the availability of Alshon Jeffery and Dallas Goedert, as Eliot Shorr-Parks of 94WIP.com tweets.
  • Buccaneers LB Devin White will not play this weekend, per Greg Auman of The Athletic (Twitter link).
  • Giants wide receiver Sterling Shepard is out of the concussion protocol and will play in Week 3 per Jordan Raanan of ESPN.com (via PFT). Rookie QB Daniel Jones will be making his first start, so Shepard’s presence will be especially helpful.
  • The Seahawks are getting closer to full strength, as both WR David Moore and defensive end Ezekiel Ansah are expected to play in Week 3, per Curtis Crabtree of Pro Football Talk. We had already heard that Ansah was likely to make his Seattle debut this weekend, but Moore’s return is earlier than expected, even after we learned at the end of August that he would avoid IR.
  • Top Jets defenders C.J. Mosley and Quinnen Williams are not expected to play this week, as Rich Cimini of ESPN.com tweets. The Week 3 outlook is also bleak for WR Demaryius Thomas and LB Jordan Jenkins.
  • Tyler Kroft‘s Bills debut may be put on hold for awhile longer. Kroft was a full participant in Wednesday’s practice, but as Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk writes, Buffalo HC Sean McDermott told reporters that Kroft injured his ankle in Thursday’s practice and will undergo further evaluation.

2019 Proven Performance Escalators

According to the NFL’s contractual bargaining agreement, players drafted in rounds three though seven are entitled to raises during the fourth year of their respective rookie contracts. The pay bumps are tied to playing time — a player must have played in 35% of his team’s offensive or defensive snaps in two of his first three seasons, or averaged 35% playing time cumulatively during that period.

If one of these thresholds is met, the player’s salary is elevated to the level of that year’s lowest restricted free agent tender — that figure should be around $2MM in 2019. Players selected in the first or second round, undrafted free agents, and kickers/punters are ineligible for the proven performance escalator.
