Jimbo Fisher Leaves FSU For Texas A&M

Jimbo Fisher has long been viewed as a potential NFL head coaching candidate. However, he won’t be in the mix for a pro job anytime soon. Fisher has left Florida State to accept the head coaching job at Texas A&M. It’s a ten-year deal that could be worth upwards of $80MM, Alex Marvez of The Sporting News (on Twitter) hears.

Even when he was firmly entrenched with the Seminoles, Fisher always left the door open for a possible ascension to the NFL.

“I love college and I had opportunities to go to pro football as an assistant coach and as a coordinator and I’ve had inquiries as a head coach,” said Fisher in May of 2016. “It’s got to be the right organization at the right time and the right situation if you’re ever interested. We have a great situation where I’m at. It’s not something that drives me.”

College coaching contracts often come with escape hatches, but a deal of this magnitude probably calls for a hefty buyout if Fisher bails early. At the very least, we know that Fisher will not be a candidate for NFL coaching vacancies this offseason.

In his eight years at FSU, Fisher amassed an 83-23 record, including a 48-17 record in ACC games.

FSU Coach Jimbo Fisher Signs Extension

In the past, Jimbo Fisher has received interest from NFL clubs. However, he won’t be making the jump from college to the pros this year. Today, Fisher agreed to a lengthy extension with Florida State, as Ian Rapoport of NFL.com tweets.

Fisher’s new deal with FSU takes him through 2024, but there are always escape hatches in college deals, so Fisher could still entertain pro offers down the line. For this offseason, at least, he’s effectively out of the running for the Jaguars, Rams, or any other NFL team that will be looking for a head coach.

“I love college and I had opportunities to go to pro football as an assistant coach and as a coordinator and I’ve had inquiries as a head coach,” said Fisher back in May. “It’s got to be the right organization at the right time and the right situation if you’re ever interested. We have a great situation where I’m at. It’s not something that drives me.”

Fisher has amassed a 77-17 record as the coach of the Seminoles. He also groomed a solid pro quarterback in Jameis Winston, though he has his fair share of QB busts in E.J. Manuel, Christian Ponder, and JaMarcus Russell.

FSU’s Jimbo Fisher Has Received NFL Offers

Florida State head coach Jimbo Fisher has received interest from NFL clubs in the past few offseasons, and though he’s considered the offers, he plans to stay in the college ranks for the time being, as he tells Tom D’Angelo of the Palm Beach Post.

“I love college and I had opportunities to go to pro football as an assistant coach and as a coordinator and I’ve had inquiries as a head coach,” said Fisher. “It’s got to be the right organization at the right time and the right situation if you’re ever interested. We have a great situation where I’m at. It’s not something that drives me.”

This isn’t the first time that Fisher’s name has been tossed out in reference to NFL positions — at this time last year, Fisher allowed that he “would never say never” to an opportunity in the league if the right fit came along. This offseason, the approaches from NFL clubs were “decently serious,” says Fisher, who adds that he considered the offers for about “half an hour” before deciding to stick with Florida State.

Fisher, 50, has been highly successful as head coach of the Seminoles, posting a 68-14 record while winning three ACC titles and one National Championship. An offensive mind, Fisher has been adept at molding quarterbacks that eventually turn into first-round picks, but those signal-callers haven’t had much NFL success outside of Jameis Winston — E.J. Manuel, Christian Ponder, and JaMarcus Russell are a few of the high-profile NFL busts that once played under Fisher.

Extra Points: Peterson, Jimbo, Mariota, Draft

Vikings running back Adrian Peterson is not expected to face any further discipline when he comes off the commissioner’s exempt list, reports Ian Rapoport of NFL.com. For Peterson, being clear of any more punishment was a key goal of today’s meeting with league officials in New York, per Rapoport. Peterson is eligible to be reinstated next Wednesday.
