Patriots Notes: FA Tryouts, Worthy, Mallett

The Patriots were busy today trimming their roster down to 53 players. However, the team was still actively scouting the free agent market, and ESPN.com’s Mike Reiss reports that 12 players were actually in for tryouts:

Let’s check out some more notes out of New England…

  • Since Jerel Worthy failed to make the Patriots roster, the team doesn’t owe the Packers a draft pick, explains ESPN.com’s Rob Demovsky. The Patriots acquired Worthy from the Packers earlier this month for a conditional seventh-rounder.
  • The Boston Herald’s Jeff Howe tweets that the Cowboys could be a landing spot for quarterback Ryan Mallett. The writer also suggests that the Texans and Rams could get involved.
  • The Patriots won’t be provided with any additional cap relief since Isaac Sopoaga failed to make the Cardinals roster, tweets Howe.
  • Following the release of Danny Aiken, the Patriots don’t have a long snapper on the roster. As the Boston Globe’s Shalise Manza Young notes (via Twitter), if the team doesn’t carry a long snapper, it would be the first time they’ve gone without one during Bill Belichick‘s tenure.

Chiefs Release Nine Players, Place Commings On IR

Teams still have about 31 hours to trim their rosters to 75 players, and the Chiefs are getting an early start on the process by releasing nine players this morning, the team announced in a press release. Kansas City also placed second-year safety Sanders Commings on injured reserve, ending his season.

The Chiefs’ roster count sits at 78, meaning they need to make three more transactions before tomorrow’s 3pm deadline.

Chiefs Sign Three Players, Cut Two

The Chiefs have made a handful of roster moves on the defensive side of the ball, officially signing three defensive linemen and waiving a defensive tackle and linebacker. The team announced today (via Twitter) that it has signed former Ram Jermelle Cudjo and undrafted free agent Kona Schwenke, along with Kyle Love, whose agreement was previously reported. Meanwhile, Cory Grissom and Ridge Wilson have been cut (Twitter link).

Love, a former starter in New England, is the most notable name among Kansas City’s new additions, though Cudjo also has a few starts under his belt from his time in St. Louis. Cudjo saw part-time action over the last four years as a reserve on the Rams’ defensive line before he was released last week, while Love started 25 games in three seasons for the Patriots before spending time with the Jaguars and Chiefs in 2013.

As for the cuts, both Grissom and Wilson were signed by the Chiefs following the season — Wilson came from the club’s practice squad, while Grissom spent last season on injured reserve with the Patriots.

Rams Cut Daryl Richardson, Jermelle Cudjo

The Rams have waived running back Daryl Richardson, according to the NFL’s transaction wire (Twitter link via ESPN.com’s Adam Caplan). It was one of a handful of cuts made official by the Rams, who also parted ways with defensive lineman Jermelle Cudjo and offensive tackle Emmanuel McCray (Twitter links via Aaron Wilson of the Baltimore Sun).

Richardson, 24, started the 2013 season as the Rams’ primary running back, but saw most of his carries usurped by Zac Stacy over the course of the year. There was some speculation that Isaiah Pead‘s time in St. Louis could be over after the Rams drafted another running back (Tre Mason) last weekend, but it seems that Richardson is the odd man out instead. The former seventh-round pick accumulated 690 rushing yards on 167 carries and also added 38 receptions over the course of his two seasons with the Rams.

As for the Rams’ other two cuts, Cudjo saw part-time action over the last four years as a reserve on the defensive line, while McCray was just signed earlier this week as part of the club’s undrafted free agent class. Cudjo became expendable after the Rams added Alex Carrington in free agency and drafted Aaron Donald.
