Cowboys Get Down To 53

More roster cuts to pass along! The Cowboys have now gotten their roster down to 53 as well, making a slew of cuts in the process. Here are the latest cutdown day casualties out of Dallas:

Thompson played in 15 games with the Cowboys last year and started seven, but wasn’t able to crack the 53-man roster this time around. The safety started four games for Dallas the year before in 2019. Sprinkle flashed some potential with Washington in 2019 when he had 241 yards, but he was a non-factor in the passing game last year.

Hamilton also started a couple of games for the Cowboys last year, and the release of several significant contributors shows Mike McCarthy was serious about overhauling that side of the ball. Hardy is the undrafted rookie who has been featured on this year’s season of HBO’s ‘Hard Knocks.’ He’s expected to be added to the practice squad if he clears waivers, Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News tweets.

Cowboys Sign TE Jeremy Sprinkle

The Cowboys added a piece to their tight end room Wednesday, poaching one from rival Washington. Four-year Washington contributor Jeremy Sprinkle signed with Dallas.

Washington used Sprinkle as a frequent starter, trotting him out as a first-stringer in 33 games. The former fifth-round pick will join a Cowboys team that saw blocking tight end Blake Bell head back to the Chiefs this offseason.

Logan Thomas emerged as Washington’s top receiving tight end in 2020, but Sprinkle still played an extensive role. He suited up for all 17 Washington games, making six starts, but only caught two passes. The second came in Washington’s playoff loss. Sprinkle, however, played 64% of Washington’s snaps in 2019, when the team lost Jordan Reed and Vernon Davis to season-ending injuries. He caught 26 passes for 241 yards and a touchdown in his third year.

The 26-year-old blocker/occasional pass catcher will join Blake Jarwin and Dalton Schultz at tight end in Dallas.

DeSean Jackson just signed a one-year deal with the Rams, and before that we hadn’t heard of much known interest in the speedster. That doesn’t mean that interest didn’t exist however. Speaking to the media after signing in Los Angeles, Jackson revealed he had other suitors. “There were other options out there,” Jackson said, via Michael David Smith of ProFootballTalk.com.

Jackson also explained his thought process in signing with the Rams, and it turns out their head coach was a big factor. “I could have went to other teams, other places. But my focus was really reuniting with Sean McVay. Talking to McVay once I was a free agent and really kind of having those open conversations, talking about the possibilities, it was something that was intriguing for me. So, I think that outweighs everything.” McVay coached Jackson during their time in Washington together, and it was reported at the time of signing that he played a role in recruiting Jackson to LA.

  • We’ve only got a little over five months until the start of the 2021 regular season, and it sounds like the league is planning on having things back to normal by then. Commissioner Roger Goodell told the media on Tuesday that the NFL is planning on having all stadiums with full fan capacity for the 2021 season, via Tom Pelissero of NFL Network (Twitter link). Obviously we’ve got a long way to go before the season actually starts and anything can happen, but it’s great to hear the league striking such an optimistic tone nonetheless. Here’s to hoping everything goes smoothly.
  • Frank Reich loves to feature tight ends heavily in his offense, so it might not surprise you to learn the Colts are covering all their bases at the position. Indy had free agent Jeremy Sprinkle in for a workout on Monday, Pelissero tweets. A fifth-round pick out of Arkansas in 2017, Sprinkle made a bit of noise with Washington in 2019 when he had 26 catches for 241 yards and a touchdown. This past season he appeared in all 16 games and played on over 20 percent of the snaps, but was mostly used as a blocker and only caught one pass.
  • The last time you heard about Josh Shaw, he was getting suspended for allegedly betting on Cardinals games while he was on the team’s injured reserve list in November of 2019. The defensive back was suspended for the entire 2020 season, but after serving his ban has now been reinstated by the NFL, the league office announced last week. Shaw started 12 games for the Bengals in 2016, but never made too big of an impact outside of that. He only just turned 29, but teams aren’t exactly going to be beating down his door to sign him now that he’s available.

Redskins Sign Jonathan Allen

The Redskins have signed first-round pick Jonathan Allen along with eight of their other nine draft picks. The lone holdout, so to speak, is third round cornerback Fabian Moreau. The full list of signed rookies is below: Jonathan Allen (vertical)

Allen, an Alabama product, was regarded by many prognosticators as a top five talent in this year’s class. However, on draft night, he slipped all the way to Washington at No. 17. His slide might have been tied to his medical situation as he is said to have symptoms of arthritis in both of his shoulders. Allen says that the shoulders are not an issue now, but he did concede at the combine that the issue could cause trouble down the road. As a senior, Allen had 69 tackles, including 16 tackles for a loss. He also had 10.5 sacks, nearly matching his 12 sack total from 2015.

Sprinkle made headlines for all the wrong reasons when he shoplifted from a Belk department store days before Arkansas played in the Belk Bowl. Despite the embarrassing incident, teams still viewed the tight end as an NFL talent after he had 33 catches for 380 yards and four touchdowns in eleven starts for the Razorbacks. We could see Sprinkle in two tight end sets with top TE Jordan Reed this season.
