Chiefs Activate CB Morris Claiborne

The Chiefs have activated cornerback Morris Claiborne after the completion of his four-game suspension, the club announced today. In a corresponding move, guard Jeff Allen has been released.

Kansas City inked Claiborne to a one-year, $2MM deal in August with the knowledge that he was facing a four-game ban after violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy. At present, it’s unclear if Claiborne will immediately factor into the Chiefs’ plans on defense. Kansas City currently ranks ninth in pass defense DVOA, and each of the club’s top three corners — Bashaud Breeland, Charvarius Ward, and Kendall Fuller — have graded among Pro Football Focus‘ top-64 CBs, so Claiborne might not be needed right off the bat.

Claiborne, 29, has a concerning injury history, as he played in only 47 of a possible 80 games during the first five years of his career. But he managed to stay healthy during his past two years on the Jets roster, appearing in 30 games and playing nearly 2,000 defensive snaps since 2017. Last season, Claiborne posted two interceptions and ranked as a top-25 corner in Football Outsiders’ success rate.

Allen, meanwhile, was in the midst of his second stint with the Chiefs, with whom he’s spent six of his eight NFL campaigns. This year, Allen hadn’t played at all on the offensive side of the ball, and had seen only a handful of special teams snaps.

Chiefs Place Chad Henne On IR

The Chiefs carried Chad Henne onto their 53-man roster but will not have him at practice for at least six weeks. Henne will be placed on IR. Matt Moore took his place as Kansas City’s backup quarterback.

Additionally, the Chiefs re-signed Jeff Allen and released Jeremiah Attaochu. The Chiefs released Allen on Saturday. Their former second-round pick already had multiple stints on the roster; he’ll be back as a depth piece up front. The Chiefs signed Attaochu earlier this year, one of several new edge players brought in under DC Steve Spagnuolo.

Henne cannot return to the Chiefs’ active roster for at least eight weeks. The veteran passer recently underwent ankle surgery.

Moore and Patrick Mahomes are the only quarterbacks on Kansas City’s roster. Moore has not played since the 2017 season. The Chiefs, however, signed Kyle Shurmur to their practice squad. A rookie out of Vanderbilt, Shurmur is Giants HC Pat Shurmur’s son.

Chiefs Cutdown To 53

The Chiefs announced the following moves to get down to an initial 53-man roster. Probably the most surprising move was the release of veteran guard Jeff Allen. The Chiefs drafted Allen in the second-round back in 2012, and he started four games for them last year. He’s made 80 career appearances, with 66 starts.

Chiefs Sign Jeff Allen

Marcus Kemp‘s season ended before it could even start. The Chiefs wide receiver is done for the year after suffering ACL and MCL tears, according to Blair Kerkhoff of the Kansas City Star. To take his place on the roster, the club signed guard Jeff Allen to a one-year deal.

Kemp was in the midst of a strong preseason and had a real shot at making the 53-man roster as a wide receiver. The former UDFA out of Hawaii appeared in all 16 games last season, plus two playoff contests, and notched his first NFL catch. Unfortunately, he’ll be sidelined after a low hit from Steelers safety Sean Davis in preseason action.

Allen, meanwhile, is on board for his third stint with Kansas City. He has 66 career starts to his credit, including four last season.

Chiefs May Re-Sign G Jeff Allen

Jeff Allen could be on the verge of reuniting with the Chiefs. The guard is discussing a deal with the team, according to former teammate Geoff Schwartz (on Twitter). 

A new deal would mark Allen’s third go-round with Kansas City. The Chiefs drafted Allen in the second round of the 2012 draft and brought him back into the fold in the middle of the 2018 campaign. In between the KC stints, he spent time with the Texans.

Allen has has 66 career starts to his credit, including four last season. The Texans paid him $7MM/year on his last deal, but he’d come significantly cheaper here in 2019.

Chiefs Sign G Jeff Allen

Shorthanded at guard, the Chiefs will bring back a familiar face in Jeff Allen. The seventh-year lineman reached an agreement to return to Kansas City, the Chiefs announced.

Allen played four seasons with the Chiefs, from 2012-15, the last of which being strong enough to entice the Texans to give him a $7MM-per-year deal. That contract did not end up working out, and Houston cut Allen after two seasons. He’s been in free agency since July.

To make room on their roster, the Chiefs waived defensive back Leon McQuay.

A former second-round pick during the Scott Pioli regime, Allen started for most of his first two seasons but missed most of the 2014 campaign. His 2015 contract year featured work at guard and tackle, and Allen’s return midway through the season partially coincided with a Chiefs 10-game win streak that helped them go from 1-5 to the playoffs.

He started 26 games in Houston but didn’t generate strong reviews, with concussion issues and other injuries intervening. The Texans placed Allen on their PUP list in May and reached an injury settlement with the 28-year-old blocker two months later. The Texans added former Allen Kansas City teammate Zach Fulton on a similar free agent deal in March.

The Chiefs are without Laurent Duvernay-Tardif, who suffered a broken leg that has him on IR. Jordan Devey is filling in as the team’s starting right guard. Allen played three of his four K.C. seasons under Andy Reid, so it shouldn’t take him long to readjust to the Chiefs’ system.

Texans Release G Jeff Allen

The Texans announced that they have released guard Jeff Allen from the Reserve/Physically Unable to Perform list with an injury settlement. Allen was placed on PUP in May after two years of dealing with concussions and ankle injuries. 

Allen was already off of the 90-man offseason roster thanks to the designation, but today’s transaction will allow him to seek work elsewhere. It’s not immediately clear whethe the 28-year-old will continue to play football.

A second-round selection by the Chiefs in 2012, Allen spent four seasons in Kansas City where he primarily played left guard, but also spent time at left tackle and right tackle. He made the move to right guard upon his arrival in 2016 missed six games for Houston with those injury issues. Prior to his release, he had two years remaining on his deal, with base salaries of $5.75MM (2018) and $6MM (2019).

The Texans project to start newcomers Zach Fulton and Senio Kelemete at the guard spots this year. Greg Mancz and Chad Slade, meanwhile, appear to be in line for the top reserve spots.

Texans Place Jeff Allen On PUP List

The Texas put starting right guard Jeff Allen on the reserve physically unable to perform list, Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle writes.

Since signing a four-year deal with Houston in 2016, Allen has been plagued by injuries, including concussions and ankle ailments. With the move, the veteran will no longer count against the team’s 90-man offseason roster limit.

Here’s a look around the NFL:

  • Steelers defensive end Stephon Tuitt has a chance to play this week against Minnesota, coach Mike Tomlin told reporters on Tuesday (Twitter link via Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com). Tuitt has been classified as week-to-week with his bicep injury.
  • In light of the Zach Strief injury news, Nick Underhill of The Advocate (on Twitter) notes that likely replacement Senio Kelemete can earn $200K by playing in 50% of the team’s snaps and up to $600K at 70%. The Saints will be without the tackle for at least a few weeks.
  • Texans guard Jeff Allen is expected to miss at least one game with an ankle injury, Mark Berman of FOX 26 tweets. Allen, one of Houston’s starting guards, is in year two of a four-year, $28MM pact. He appeared in 14 games last season, all starts.
  • Wide receiver Cobi Hamilton is working out for the Texans this week, a source tells ESPN.com’s Jeremy Fowler (on Twitter). The former Pittsburgh receiver could round out a banged up unit that is missing both Bruce Ellington (concussion) and Will Fuller (collarbone).
  • The Chiefs gave running back Akeem Hunt an upgraded practice squad contract, Aaron Wilson of The Houston Chronicle tweets. He’ll now make $36K per week, which comes out to $615K for the year. Hunt signed on with KC’s taxi squad on Sept. 5 and it sounds like the Chiefs weren’t the only team interested in his services.
